Episode # 9: Wired by your friends. Meet your mirror neurons. Jul 09, 2019
    Show notes

It has often be said that we are the sum of the 5 people we hang around with. Take a quick look and see how you are modelling their behaviour. Humans have evolved quite a sophisticated system in the premotor cortex, that allows us to mirror each other. It is thought this is why human language developed so rapidly compared to other species. Test it out and see. Try smiling at someone and see what happens in return. The mirror neuron system can be trained like other parts of the brain. The exciting part is that empathy and compassion also exist in this part of the brain. One day at a time and one smile at a time, perhaps we can build a more compassionate place to live. This is the idealist living in an unideal world. Be with people that are good reflectors.

Episode #8. Rewired to make rational decisions. Get to know the prefrontal cortex. Jul 09, 2019
    Show notes

It is near impossible to make rational decisions when we are stressed out. This is because stress is processed by the emotional part of the brain and it shuts down the prefrontal cortex. It is in this part of the brain that we pause and take in information and think about it and decide what to do with all the information. There is a simple test to see how well your prefrontal cortex is faring. In this episode, we give you the opportunity to feel your prefrontal cortex. Enjoy and smile.

Episode #10: Rewired for Love Jul 07, 2019
    Show notes

The brain can be rewired to love again. First ourselves and then others. I have come to see that love, especially, between the ages of 0-3 years old can solve a lot of mental health problems. The good news, we can learn how to love again and be loved. It is not possible to go back in time or change our past, we can use neuroplasticity and learn to hug or smile, no matter what age we are. This episode is all about the brain on love. Learning to love living again lead me to begin to say yes to do things when I would normally say no. Outside signing up for a 100 mile race and doing comedy, I said yes to spending one whole Saturday, yes the WHOLE day, doing yoga, meditation, tarot, astrology and to cap it all off-a silent vegan lunch with 100 people NOT talking-that was by far -the hardest thing I have ever done. This all happened in the pouring rain in a yurt, in the heart of where the greatest human quest that remains, outside cryotherapy and cryonics, is for people to find themselves. The unending anxiety provoking life journey to realize, we do not matter.

Whilst doing the warrior pose during the vinyasa yoga, my natural cannabis surged- I felt high as a kite, much like coming off the comedy stage. In butterfly pose, it hurt like hell- bam- the opioids came out and hit my brainstem. Exactly what happened while doing Wim Hof breathing exercises.

    OMG!

    Inside voice

I have found an unlimited supply to drugs.

What happens if I get addicted to vinyasa yoga, meditation and Wim Hof method?

I could end up wasting my whole life standing in a yurt and hours in horizontal position breathing. I can concoct a stew of my own addictive chemicals. I can no longer work or see my family and friends, because I am always thinking about looking for my next hit, when I can get away to a silent retreat, hours on a mountain on my own, or hours bending over stretched out. I cannot give it up.

What a waste of a life. I could have been chatting with my friends on social media, laughing my head off binge watching Billions and actually helping the homeless. The only solution. I joined meditative anonymous. I will let you know if it helps reconnect me to my life purpose. Jokes aside. Please have more fun and love. Episode #7: Dopamine push for motivation Jul 06, 2019
    Show notes

Do you find yourself procrastinating, overeating or feeling low. I will do it tomorrow. I will binge watch just one more episode on Netflix. One more chocolate can't hurt. The longer we sit and this can lead to decreases in dopamine levels in places that drive motivation and reward. The longer we sit the harder it is to get moving again. Keeping ourselves pushing out small amounts of dopamine may be just the tonic we need to keep us motivated and moving forward on important projects, diets and exercise goals. In this episode we talk how to get just a bit more dopamine that drives healthy habits and push the brain to drive motivation and reward. Let's push dopamine for healthy habits.

Episode #6. Wired to take a cold shower. All about the brainstem. LOL. Jun 12, 2019
    Show notes

I really really hate cold showers and did not think I could ever have one. I was the person that had the shower at maximal heat. I made myself start the Wim Hof course. It became very clear I was totally wrong and after a few days of training myself - there I was standing in a cold shower for 2 minutes. Like most things in life, as soon as I thought I knew something I was wrong. Wim Hof and his method has been the subject of decades of research. It has been shown that he can retrain his brain stem to withstand hours of ice, swim under icesheets and walk up freezing cold mountains in his shorts. The area of the brain- called the brainstem is where the majority of the "autonomic nervous system" relays and connects the brain and body. It is meant to be under subconscious control. Using brain imaging it was shown that Wim Hof was able to consciously control this part of his brain. Once again, the textbooks are being rewritten. I am not sure what the new name for the autonomic system will be called. Please take a look at www.wimhofmethod.com and the series of videos. It is extraordinary and definitely helped me be able to take and enjoy having a cold shower for the first time in my life.

Episode #5. Wired to be Stressed. Jun 11, 2019
    Show notes

The other day I was in a women’s change room after a swim. I overheard two people going over their problems, each reinforcing the other, talking about how they hated their jobs, how forgetful they were becoming, medical problems, going out less etc. The phrase that kept popping up: “Well this is the natural progression of things”. I wanted to scream from the rooftop: “STOP, NO. NO. NO!” Stop shaping your brain’s plasticity with this absolute nonsense. Of course there is nothing wrong with sharing problems and it is important to be heard- but- when it is the only conversation and it slowly escalates into a competition, know that our collective brain health is degrading. Why! The brain learns from negative and stressful things at a 5x rate to positive things. Yes. It has been designed that way to keep us safe from predators that no longer exist in the modern world. We are born stressed out. These internal and external conversations and interactions slowly erode our collective brain health and happiness. We have already inherited a lot of sh** from the past-which is why our attention is fixed on negatives ☺

What we focus on and how we view situations is actively rewiring the brain and body on a daily basis. Because the brain loves the comfort zone and takes in negative information at a faster rate than positive information. It takes a lot of conscious resistance to build new healthy and resilient neural pathways. This is why it feels so hard and why change is difficult. If it were simple to overcome millions of years of brain's survival wiring then suffering and self-help would not be a growing and massive industry. We would all be swimming in the Bahamas.

Episode #4: Rewiring the brain. How to kickstart neuroplasticity. Jun 11, 2019
    Show notes

KICKSTART NEUROPLASTICITY: SAY Yes to NO
It sounds simple but it is not easy. Start where you feel your greatest resistance. For example, I really really hate cold showers and did not think I could ever have one. I was the person that had the shower at maximal heat. I made myself start the Wim Hof course. It became very clear I was totally wrong and after a few days of training myself - there I was standing in a cold shower for 2 minutes. Like most things in life, as soon as I thought I knew something I was wrong. Try to start to notice what you say no to, pay attention to your conversations. Know that everything is shaping your brain and either guiding you into or out of your comfort zone. To kick start neuroplasticity. Try saying one YES to a normal definite NO. There is nothing to lose and your brain will thank you.

    For example:
    1. Trouble with a person at work or a yelling-type teenager conversation. Try this. Pause. Push your shoulders back. Then smile at them. Because of mirror neurons, they have to smile back. They don’t expect you to smile. You have disarmed your enemy and a new type of relationship has started.
    2. Mondayitis: try taking a different route to work and see how it makes you feel.
    3. “Meditation/mindfulness is not for me” Try this. Take a deep breath for a minute everyday. Welcome to being mindful.
    4. I cannot run to save myself. Walk for 1 min and then walk a little faster for 30 seconds. You are now jogging etc.

It all starts with the simplest baby steps to get new brain synapses growing and over time and with practice it adds up and then you have a new hardwired connection that is a new neural pathway. I am addicted to brain rewiring. LOL!.
