Leon Benson spent more than half of his life, a total of 24 years, in an Indiana state prison for a murder he didn't commit. Despite the lack of physical evidence and a questionable eyewitness identification, he was convicted. But new realities start to come to light when attorney Lara Bazelon takes up his case and is determined to secure Benson's release. Season three of Suspect, co-produced by Campside Media and Wondery, delves into the flaws in the criminal justice system that led to Benson's wrongful conviction for the 1998 shooting of Kasey Schoen in Indianapolis. The investigation aims to uncover the truth about who really committed the crime and why the eyewitness testimony that led to Benson's conviction was so shaky. Host Matthew Shaer joins co-producer and writer Bazelon to take a deep dive into the nature of memory and how it can be fallible and result in an innocent man's life being wasted, while the real perpetrator remains unpunished. As the investigation unfolds, will Bazelon and her team gather enough evidence to free Benson? And what will happen to Schoen's real killer? Since the early 1970s, dozens of bodies of murder victims have been found along the Interstate Highway 45 area. While there have been arrests made for some of the murders that have taken place in the area, the vast majority remain unsolved. Some theorize that the area served as a dumping ground for multiple serial killers that were operating in the area, but that has never been proven. ***TRIGGER WARNING*** Abduction / Kidnapping / Rape / Strangulation / Murder All of these are of both adults and teenage girls. These are just a few names out of thousands of missing and murdered Indigenous women in the nation. Many aren't reported and most aren't even investigated properly, leaving loved ones feeling lost, filled with questions, and feeling as though they can't trust any law enforcement. There's a common saying in Native American communities: "When an Indigenous woman goes missing, she goes missing twice—first her body vanishes and then her story." Why are so many Native American and Alaska Native women going missing and being murdered and WHY does it seem like people don't care? On Saturday, March 1st, 2008, the Caffey family home in Emory, Texas was engulfed in flames. Terry Caffey, the father, had been shot five times and had amazingly escaped the burning home and crawled 500 yards to his neighbors' house, where 911 was called. Firefighters found the burned remains of 38-year-old Penny Caffey, 13-year-old Matthew, and 8-year-old Tyler. Still missing was 16-year-old Erin. Terry was immediately rushed to the hospital and into surgery. Once Terry was in recovery, a Rains County Sheriff told him that his only daughter was alive and well. Unfortunately, Terry's relief that Erin was safe was short-lived. The Sheriff also told Terry that she was in custody for being involved in the murders. He was stunned. There was no way that his daughter had anything to do with this. However, Terry, and the rest of the community, were shocked to find that the evidence against Erin was overwhelming. TRIGGER WARNINGS: child murder, brutality Hang with us:
