    The WoMed

The WoMed is a space to discuss, debate, and celebrate all things Women in Medicine! Danielle Maltby is joined by co-host Jackie Camardo to bring new issues and faces to light in the medical community. These nursing vets bring humor, reality, and a serious passion for the world around them to discussions on self-care, emerging healthcare trends, education, activism, patient stories, and pop culture representation of the industry. The hosts welcome not just women in medicine, but members of the LGBTQ communities in medicine as well, to ensure more people have a platform to amplify their voices. They are also joined by some of the industry’s biggest experts and thought-leaders! Coloring Outside the Lines with Madalyn Nguyen Nov 04, 2019
    Show notes

Today on The WoMed, Madalyn Nguyen (@themadmusings) shares her motivation behind becoming an osteopath, her soon-to-be-concluded journey through medical school, and how she uses her influence to spread positivity and help others reach their goals. Madalyn, D, and Dani are coming to you from the FIGS retreat in Ojai, and start off today’s episode with a Lubrication Question centered on which animal would be most polite. (The answer, by the way, is definitely not racoons.) Madalyn explains the differences between MD’s and DO’s and why she chose to follow a path to become the latter. Growing up, Madalyn’s greatest role model was her aunt, who helped her to realize her life’s mission to help others through a holistic approach of mind and body. She discusses what led her to begin using Instagram as a creative outlet, how she practices selfcare, and her biggest values and greatest fears. The WoMed share how their joint experience in Peru with Madalyn led them to realize what a loving, bright soul she is – even if she doesn’t care for personal space.

Work Hard, Play Hard with Dr. Shaliz Pourkaviani Oct 28, 2019
    Show notes

Today on The WoMed, neonatologist Shaliz Pourkaviani (@doc_by_day) joins D and Dani to talk about the importance of a positive attitude, the benefits of locum tenens, and the need for women to support each other in the workplace. Dani asks something we’re all wondering when listening to Shaliz: is this much energy normal for her? The answer is absolutely. Shaliz finds time to take care of herself first so that she can take care of others later, and she understands the importance of knowing her limits. Her positivity and energy have allowed her to successfully acclimate to hospitals all over the country while working as a traveling neonatologist. Dr. Shaliz shares the top three causes of negativity in the workplace and how to combat them, and why her biggest mentors have been her parents, particularly her father. She passes on to D and Dani the biggest piece advice she was given in med school – one that still sticks with her to this day.

Finding Your Balance with Suzie Brown Oct 21, 2019
    Show notes

Today on The WoMed, cardiologist turned singer-songwriter, Suzie Brown (@suziebrownsongs), joins D and Dani to talk music, medicine, and following your passions. Growing up, Suzie always loved music but was shy about her talent and kept mostly to herself. She decided to follow in her parent’s footsteps by going to medical school and focusing on her strengths of science and math, but she couldn’t match the sense of belongingness she felt when making music with others and ultimately decided music was a passion worth pursuing. She now works part-time in cardiology while raising her children and still making time for music, recently releasing her sixth studio album! Suzie gives incredible advice on how to be the best doctor, how to prioritize during different season of life, and listening to yourself.

Her experience and degrees allow her to be prepared for whatever the day may hold as a college dietician, because every day is truly unique. New Grad Life with Nurse Sarah Oct 07, 2019
    Show notes

Today on The WoMed, D and Dani are joined by Nurse Sarah (@shesinscrubs) who is celebrating her anniNURSEary this very week! Transitioning from a new grad to a bedside nurse can end a career just as fast as it started, and Sarah discusses how seeking out preemptive therapy helped her to develop the coping skills she needed to get through her first year of nursing. Inspired one of our favorite WoMed (that’s you, Dani!), Sarah created an Instagram account centered on sharing memes and mental health posts to help both new and seasoned nurses build a community and share their stories. Sarah discusses the benefits of a new grad orientation program, how best to cope with nurses who don’t want to see you succeed, and her biggest pieces of advice for new nurses.

Major Life Changes with D & Dani Sep 30, 2019
    Show notes

This week on The WoMed, D has a big announcement to make that leads into an honest and emotional conversation on the realities of nursing and how to lead authentic and meaningful lives while still making sure to make care of yourself. Their Lubrication Question brings them back to their childhood hobbies and favorite indulgences and reveals what age Dani refers to as the best year of her life. The hosts discuss the harsh realities of bedside nursing that has led them both at times to suffer financially, physically, and emotionally, and how there may be other ways to effectively reach people that don’t involve giving up a part of yourself. D and Dani daydream about summer vacation, going off the grid, and potentially running for senate to represent those in healthcare. You can read the New York Times article on burnout that was referenced in today's episode here!

Rachel Cruze (RachelCruze.com) joins D and Dani to tackle the overwhelming subject of personal finance and how best to achieve financial health. The WoMed’s Lubrication Question this week centers on the funniest things they’ve seen strangers do, which results in some very strange but equally hilarious responses. Rachel describes how she became involved in finance from a young age by traveling the country with her dad, her goal to help all people achieve financial success, and how she has managed to navigate the world without a credit score. The hosts reveal some of their biggest financial struggles and ask their most pressing financial questions including how to approach student loan debt, refinancing, and retirement. Rachel, D, and Dani uncover the biggest reasons people find themselves being financially irresponsible, which relates back to comparison culture and Instagram highlight reels. Getting Explicit with Katie Duke, Pt 1 Sep 02, 2019
    Show notes

Katie Duke (@thekatieduke), social media influencer, Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, entrepreneur, and motivational speaker sits down with the WoMed to discuss her journey in the medical field thus far. You may recognize Katie’s name, attitude, and personality from her time on NY Med, a docuseries that followed Katie as she worked as an ER Nurse in New York City. While on the series, Katie began to build a presence through social media at a time when people were just getting familiar with some of today’s most popular platforms. Her powerful online presence led her to quickly build a following, but also eventually led to her termination from her 7-year job. Katie gets honest about her constant state of anxiety that has resulted from other women in the field failing to support each other and the stress that stays with her from her experience getting fired. The WoMed discuss their fears – both silly and valid – and how bad decisions and unfortunate situations can actually lead to the greatest success. Tune in next Monday for Part 2!
