    The WoMed is a space to discuss, debate, and celebrate all things Women in Medicine! Danielle Maltby is joined by co-host Jackie Camardo to bring new issues and faces to light in the medical community. These nursing vets bring humor, reality, and a serious passion for the world around them to discussions on self-care, emerging healthcare trends, education, activism, patient stories, and pop culture representation of the industry.     On today’s episode, Host D speaks with Dr. Rinke Bos who is a Principal Scientist at Janssen Vaccines & Prevention in Leiden, the Netherlands, currently working on developing a vaccine for COVID-19. Dr. Rinke’s work focuses on research and development of vaccines against viral infectious diseases and she is leading the charge when it comes to finding a vaccine to end the current pandemic. She shares how she became interested and involved in immunology (D’s career in a next life!), advice for those who may be interested in pursuing a similar career path, and the questions that are still left unanswered when it comes to the worldwide pandemic. Dr. Rinke also discusses the current status of a COVID-19 vaccine and why this virus in particular is so difficult to grasp, from those who transmit the virus to how it is spread.

    Getting the Facts Right with Dr. Danielle Belardo, MD Jun 29, 2020

    From frustration over the spread of medical misinformation about COVID-19 to racial inequities in our healthcare system, this week’s guest Dr. Danielle Belardo and host D address some important conversations happening in the medical community. Dr. Belardo (@daniellebelardomd) is a Cardiology Fellow and Director of Cardiology at the Insititute of Plant-Based Medicine. She is a go-to when it comes to the benefits of plant-based nutrition for cardiovascular health. In today’s episode, Dr. Belardo and D chat about how pandemic panic has led to the sharing of poorly-sourced information, how to make realistic changes towards plant-based diets, and how they’re trying to shift their own thinking when it comes to race and supporting anti-racist initiatives. Dr. Belardo shares her insights on what needs to be done to increase the number of women in cardiology and discusses her love for nurses as well as her gripes about sexism in med school.

    COVID-19 Conversation with Not-So-New-Grad, Nurse Sarah Jun 15, 2020

    During this year’s Nurse Week, Host D checked in with a guest from Season One, Nurse Sarah, who is currently tending to COVID-19 patients in Florida. Nurse Sarah is a truly amazing voice on social media who uses her Instagram platform to address disparities in healthcare and share what it's been like working in the COVID unit. Last time we spoke with Sarah, she was transitioning from new grad to bedside nurse. Nurse Sarah is now two years in and speaks out about her current abnormal nurse reality working as an RN in a COVID unit in one of the country’s hardest hit areas. Her career path has not come without obstacles; Andrea shares with D how her place in the nursing program was questioned on the very first day and having to do 76 interviews before getting her current position. These experiences have not curbed Andrea’s motivations. She talks about what it really means to be a self-advocate and how able-bodied allies can amplify the voices of people with disabilities.
