On this episode of Late To The Party, we unpack the electrifying journey of "The Mitchells vs. The Machines," an animated film that blends humor, heartfelt moments, and stunning visuals. Directed by Mike Rianda, this quirky Netflix gem follows a dysfunctional family who unexpectedly become humanity's last hope. As we reflect on the film's initial hurdles and why it took a while to catch our eye, we share our thoughts on its dynamic animation, compelling storytelling, and standout characters.
Comparing it to animated blockbusters like "Into the Spider-Verse" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," we highlight why "The Mitchells vs. The Machines" holds its own despite not having the same level of groundbreaking narrative. We also discuss how the movie's portrayal of modern family dynamics and clever comedy make it a must-watch, even if it doesn't reinvent the wheel in storytelling.
Finally, we delve into how the humor and generational jokes play out, comparing it to films like "A Goofy Movie" and "Age of Ultron." We also pit it against recent animated hits on IMDB's recommended watch list. Wrapping up, we acknowledge its accolades at the Annie Awards and Oscars, reinforcing why this film is a solid recommendation for family viewing.

Late To The Party - Mad Max: Fury Road May 08, 2024

Show notes

Have you ever sat down, completely alone, as the screen lit up with a world so chaotic yet captivating that you felt every pulse-pounding moment in your bones? That’s exactly what happened to Eric and Phil when they first saw "Mad Max: Fury Road." Join us as we break our hiatus with a bang, diving headfirst into the dystopian chaos and beauty of George Miller's masterpiece. From the unforgettable score to the relentless pace that never lets up, we've got a lot to say about this high-octane adventure. And with "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" on the horizon, we're revving up our engines for what's next in this gritty universe.
The legend of Max Rockatansky is one shrouded in dust and mystery, and no one wears that mantle quite like Tom Hardy. But let's be honest, did he fill Mel Gibson's boots, or did he leave us parched for more of Max's past? Let's not forget the ensemble cast that brought their A-game, especially Nicholas Hoult, who deserves a victory lap for his role. Tensions, apologies, and the raw power of practical effects—it's the meaty discussion you didn’t know you needed.
Reflecting on a decade since "Fury Road" tore through theaters, we're peeling back the layers of its legacy. Did it redefine what we expect from action films? Absolutely. We'll even toss around our thoughts on its influence over the eagerly awaited "Borderlands" adaptation—can it deliver the same gut punch, or will it be left in the dust? Speculation abounds as we consider alternate realities where Eminem or Heath Ledger helmed the wheel as Max. The future's looking as wild as the wasteland, with the "Furiosa" spin-off gearing up to take us back to the madness. Buckle up, listeners, because every Wednesday is a new escape into the worlds of gaming, anime, and entertainment—just wait for it.
Letterbox'd Synopsis: An apocalyptic story set in the furthest reaches of our planet, in a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken, and most everyone is crazed fighting for the necessities of life. Within this world exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order.
