How one man solved the problem of returning to the UK from China without a job, is Scaling Up and offering SODA. Feb 17, 2020
    Show notes

    Get Noticed! Send a text.

Andy Clayton and I met in Beijing in 2008, as he was a fellow British entrepreneur, and so he was one of the first people I called when I wanted to learn how other returning expatriates have managed the transition. Fast forward from our first meeting and now Andy is a successful and articulate Gazelles and Petra certified coach with the European rights to the training methodologies of the American firm providing the tools of Scaling Up.
Andy sees the world differently to most people. Bi-lingual, he has a powerful sense of focus and clarity which helped Andy to found, grow and sell the UK’s largest China Operations outsourcing agency, helping Western companies to operate over $50m of sales in China. He achieved this through deployment of the tools of Scaling Up, and has since certified as a Petra and Gazelles Coach, helping organisations implement the tools of Scaling Up, aligning teams to unlock growth and potential in their organisations.
Andy’s passions included extreme distance running, and supporting Autistic causes, including founding Autistic Entrepreneurs.
We talk here about how he planned the sale of his China business when he decided that he didn't want to fly back and forth any more.
He shares the way in which he approached the Petra coaching company in America to bring their Scaling Up methodology to the UK.
Andy has also been working on SODA - his own methodology for saving time, which is being successfully implemented by executives saving them literally days in the month.

1 million missed the tax deadline. Did they know they can claim 100% tax on a Tesla? Listen to learn how you can Feb 09, 2020
    Show notes

    Get Noticed! Send a text.

Tax Tips from Simon Robinson, ATT (Fellow) FMAAT.
11.7 million returns due. 94% were filed online. Just over 700k filed on the 31st. 26.5K filed in the last hour. Last year, last filing was with 17 seconds to go! However just short of 1 million missed the deadline.
    Late filing penalties
£100 late filing penalty. If still unfiled after three months (30 April 2020) then £10 per day up to £900. If still unfiled after 6 months, 5% of tax due or £300 if greater. Same again at 12 months. Latter penalties capped at 100% of tax due.

    Late payment penalties
Interest accrues from day one (3.25%). If unpaid at 30 days, 5% of tax due. At six months, 5% of any tax outstanding. Ditto 12 months.

Example: File and pay on 1 February 2021 (1 year and a day late). Liability £10,000. Interest and penalties would total £3,825.

    How to avoid this
Speak to an adviser/accountant! Keep good records as you go, it is easier and aids budgeting. Aim to file as early as possible, no adverse effect on payment/amendment dates and gives more notice of any liability.

If you are late, don’t panic. Aim to complete asap to limit penalties. Also consider making an estimated tax payment to limit interest and penalties in respect of late payment.

You can appeal penalties if you have a reasonable excuse, but the acceptable list is limited (bereavement, hospital stay, HMRC technical issues).

Common business expenses to make sure you claim
Use of home as office - £4 per week with no evidence, more if properly calculated
Mileage for business miles – 45 per mile for the first 10,000 miles, 25 thereafter. Keep mileage log
Accountancy costs(!) – for company accounts and returns or personal tax return if self-employed

    IR35 changes
Or ‘off-payroll working’. Where an individual works via a personal service company (PSC) and would otherwise be considered an employee. Rules in place since 2000 but notoriously hard to enforce.

Previously if applied, the PSC was the deemed employer so any income was (broadly) taxed as if PAYE. This stopped the income tax efficient profit extraction profile of relatively low salary and dividends. From April 2020, the emphasis switches to the engaging party to operate the tests and decide whether the rules apply. If they do, payments are treated as employment income.

Contract for a project or ongoing services? Paid by time or for a task? Mutual obligation?Right of control/substitution?Own tools/equipment?Multiple clients?Financial risk (work rejected and remedied at your cost)?

    Entrepreneurs and saving 10%
If concerning Capital Gains Tax (CGT), need to make sure shares in company qualify (need to be a 5% holding and an officer/employee) or if assets in self-employed business check that their use qualifies and they are sold around the time the business ends/is sold.

If general taxation, best advice is to get an adviser if they do not have one! Should easily be able to save you 10% in maximising expense claims and giving you back time to increase income.

Topical tax tip would be to consider an electric car. For 2020/2021, there will be on benefit in kind (and therefore no income tax or class 1a NI) on providing an electric company car. The company can claim 100% of lease payment or purchase price and running costs against corporation tax. 1% and 2% rates confirmed for the following two years.

Experienced entrepreneur and Silver Fox, Jay Shapiro is launching a #GamingForGood movement across Africa from his base in Nairobi, Kenya. He uprooted his young family from America to move to Africa, sensing the sort of excitement and buzz he experienced in Singapore in the mid '90's

There are 350 million connected smartphones in Africa, growing at 20%, and the median age in Africa is 19. UsikuGames is creating a new movement by gathering people on their mobile devices to play skills-based games and enjoy live entertainment, as a community.

Canadian Jay started and built Blue interactive in Singapore in 1999 which he later sold to WPP in 2008.

We talk about the importance of drinking with other techdads, why he has a rap group on his payroll, why failing is a hallmark of an entrepreneur, and how he and his successful wife manage their relationship to care for their kids in Nairobi.

"If you are not failing at least 50% of the time, then you aren't trying. You have to be willing to get things wrong."

How a Singapore lawyer uses vanilla to stop the SME goose chase. Dec 05, 2019
    Show notes

    Get Noticed! Send a text.

Mark Goh, Founder,VanillaLaw™ | Barrister (UK) I Advocate & Solicitor (Singapore) | Accredited Mediator(SIMI) | Negotiator(Oxford) and retired Army Captain in the Singapore Reserves.

In 1992 Mark set his own law firm upon returning from the UK to Singapore after studying law at the University of Buckingham.

    LAW FIRM GOING DIGITAL
With the advent of the digital age, he began exploring ways to digitise Vanillalaw, observing that going digital could save the law firm's operational costs in a tremendous manner. Already experienced living overseas, he could also see the potential of the law firm expanding beyond the shores of the island nation of Singapore. So in 2011, he started transforming the law firm to go digital.
    DEVELOPMENT OF VANILLALAW DOCS
By 2014, Mark had already been in practice for almost 20 years as an experienced dispute resolution lawyer. He was disheartened to observe that many (SME) business owners were often embroiled in disputes simply because they had no or poorly drafted contracts. The very thought of paying huge legal fees to consult a lawyer was (and still is) a big turn off.
Vanillalaw Docs was developed with the intent of mitigating the huge legal fees. Its an ecosystem developed by lawyers for the business owner to hands on preparing the first draft. The lawyers come in afterwards with the vetting process and advice. Today, Vanillalaw Docs has more than 850 subscribers and counting.

Mark has funded this himself, and recently launched GoSME.org

Indranee Rajah S.C., Senior Minister Of State For Law
(16 May 2017) of Singapore said,

"Tech for more productive interaction with clients: A good example is VanillaLaw™ Docs, an interactive web-based platform created by Singapore law firm, VanillaLaw™ LLC. VanillaLaw™ LLC developed their own online contract template which, when used together with this platform, allows their clients to insert relevant information to prepare the first draft of legal documents.

The law firm reviews this and focuses on issues requiring legal advice and drafting amendments. The end product is still cleared by qualified lawyers but this technology enabled process cuts down the need for multiple or long meetings to take instructions. This saves time and costs for firm and clients.

    Vanilla Law Docs

Mark then started a community called 'Go-SME to encourage Singapore SME's to take advantage of the opportunity in the wider world by using technology to distribute work processes and to find new clients. The community now has over 1,000 members in the network across Singapore, Japan and Australia.
