    The UnNoticed Entrepreneur

Fellow entrepreneurs share their stories so that us so that we can build a better business.

Hi – mine name is Jim James and I’m your host. In 2019 I started this podcast to help entrepreneurs learn from one another. When I started the Entrepreneurs Organization chapter in Beijing, I realized that the best insights came from people who had already done the work.

If you’re running a business; this show is my gift to you. It’s hard enough as it is, and I hope that this podcast solves just one problem to help you on your way.

Why wearables represent a PR opportunity, COVID trackers, and how to engage in intimate relations. Jun 20, 2020

    Get Noticed! Send a text.

Wearables, hearables, homeables (I made that last one up) are all collecting vast amounts of intimate data which will plug into algorithmic public relations. How our companies collect and use this data is a golden opportunity to communicate in a timely and appropriate way with our audiences; but done wrongly as Cambridge Analytica found can finish a company.
In this age of technology, we also have to consider the findings of Charlotte Kerner & Victoria A. Goodyear (2017) The Motivational Impact of Wearable Healthy Lifestyle Technologies: A Self-determination Perspective on Fitbits With Adolescents Report. I'll share those in this podcast, along with what happened with Governments tried to build trackers outside of the realms of Google Android and Apple IOS. Governments can't access private citizen data without their apps residing on corporate platforms; an uncomfortable lesson for us all.
As entrepreneurs, devices which gather data present vast opportunities, so how can we take advantage of these whilst retaining the confidence of our customers? This is what I talk about on this podcast.

I've learnt a lot about working with different audiences by working with different cultures over 25 years in Asia and the middle east. There are lessons here for you no matter where you are working.
I've got a special guest from Beijing talking about China, live streaming, media and digital marketing discussing WeChat and Baidu. I also share about Dian Ping, the China reviews platform which companies in the west can use to attract outbound Chinese tourists and business.
I've lived and worked in Asia since 1995, and share here insights and tools which you can use to market your company in Asia, or to Asians travelling overseas.

Google My Business, it's a roadmap for customers to your business and mine. Jun 18, 2020

    Get Noticed! Send a text.

Pretty focused today on Google My Business service as I realized that whilst my own website had 855 visitors in the last 30 days the listing for EASTWEST Public Relations in Singapore had 1,766 views in the same timeframe!
This got me to thinking about an insight shared by Russell Brunson, the ClickFunnels founder, that actually we need to go looking for our customers rather than be spending our time broadcasting in the hope that they will come to our business.
Via my ZOHO social media manager I realized that I was missing Google My Business completely which can solve one part of this problem.
I share what I learnt and how I am fixing the problem by taking advantage of this location-based search platform.

How to write and distribute a press release and a pitch for your business. It's my Silver Jubilee so I am writing one myself too. Jun 17, 2020

It's the silver jubilee of EASTWEST Public Relations - 19 June 1995 I opened the office 5 days after stepping off the plane in Singapore from the UK.
I wrote this release and used KeywordPlanner to try iterations and eventually derived the following headline 'Now more than ever EASTWEST PR is absolutely imperative' which scored a high 66 on KeywordPlanner.

This podcast talks you through the process of writing a release, a media pitch, and tools to use in order to get your release into the media.
I mention the following platforms and how to use them:
    https://keywordplanner.net
    https://www.pressrush.com
    https://www.prfire.co.uk/
    https://www.journalism.co.uk
There is also a good summary of press release distribution services available on BusinessMole.

Why are media interviews so nerve wracking, and what can you do to make them effective and stress free? Jun 15, 2020
    Show notes

    Get Noticed! Send a text.

Interviews are so critical to the building of a PR story but they are also a cause of stress, especially when it is live on television or radio. So what can you do to prepare yourself and the journalists in advance of the interview?
There are some simple and effective steps to take, which are done by an agency like EASTWEST PR , but which should be done by anyone preparing for an interview. I mention the SPEAK|pr template which includes the message home. You can download your copy for free here.
Different media respond in different ways, but the repeating themes are scarcity of time and abundance of information. It's important to help the journalist to filter through the volume and to provide just the information that the client wants to share.
I include the BBC Radio 4 Rob Young interview that I had in 2017 whilst living in China about 'Brand Britain.'

Storification - How can you use books as part of your PR plan? Author, contributor or subject? Jun 13, 2020
    Show notes

    Get Noticed! Send a text.

Storify - in our 5 stage methodology I begin with the power of stories, and the importance of them. As Park Howell said in his podcast this week, even the dollar bill is a story…everyone believes in the essential promise of payment when holding this piece of paper.
In this podcast, I share about how companies and entrepreneurs can get in and amongst the 250,000 business book titles on sale. Apparently achieving publishing success is 5% writing a good book and 95% marketing.
But for PR, publishing a book isn't with the goal of making money but rather of creating awareness of the company, it's working practices, it's leaders in a way that builds authority.
Listen to some of the tools which I mention for writing a book, including transcription service otter.ai, but also other ways to participate in publishing long-form content.
I share how Professor WLG James, my father, published "Fiction for the Working Man" in 1963 and is still a sought after authority on literature from the 1830-1850 period today.
There are many side benefits to publishing, including learning about new trends, technologies and reaching out to people who otherwise would not find a connection.

Brilliant SPEAK|PR finds its VOICE Image; find out how you can find yours! Jun 12, 2020
    Show notes

    Get Noticed! Send a text.

A conversation with Ed West, professional presentation coach to CEO's about his recent articles on the power of Donald Trump's prose, and what we can learn about hyperbole, repetition and voice image.
Ed and I talked about Voice image, the 'secret' of people who use their voices professionally. Actors, radio broadcasters, television presenters, politicians, tele-marketers, professional speakers, all of whom depend on the impression their voice makes for success, know its importance.
Thanks to Ed's great guidance I went off to evaluate my own voice image, and share in this podcast how people who are responsible for being the voice of the company need to take into consideration breath control, articulation, volume, pitch, tone, pausing and speaking rate.

Listen to how to alter your Voice Imag when talking with different audiences, including cultures. Having lived in Asia for 25 years I realize in my own video's that I am speaking very ssslllooowwwllyyy.

I checked my own EASTWEST PR page using the Flesch-Kincaid readability test and found that it has a grade level of about 7. It should be easily understood by 12 to 13-year-olds!

How to avoid being sued for defamation, and PR strategies for defendants and plaintiffs . Jun 11, 2020
    Show notes

    Get Noticed! Send a text.

When I returned from China to the UK, I was sent nasty legal letters by a company for defamation - luckily I wasn't about to be intimidated, had good legal counsel and some experience in defending myself. In this day and age of lawyers and social media, it's important to know your rights as both someone defending yourself and making legitimate claims against those who have done wrong.
In this episode I'll talk about the different aspects of defamation and how I have worked with clients to overcome defamatory comments made by errant shareholders.

Defamation (sometimes known as calumny, vilification, libel, slander or traducement) is the oral or written communication of a false statement about another that unjustly harms their reputation and usually constitutes a tort or crime.[1] In several countries, including South Korea[2] and Sweden,[3] as well as the U.S. state of Louisiana,[4] communicating a true statement can also be considered defamation.

Under common law, to constitute defamation, a claim must generally be false and must have been made to someone other than the person defamed.[5] Some common law jurisdictions also distinguish between spoken defamation, called slander, and defamation in other media such as printed words or images, called libel.[6] In the United States, false light laws protect against statements which are not technically false but are misleading.[7]

Melania Trump filed a defamation action in the New York state commercial court and in the UK High Court against the Daily Mail over allegations that she previously worked as an escort. Ms. Trump claimed damages in the sum of $150m.

The Mail later retracted the statement, published an apology and settled the case for $3m. The case was subject to much media attention, being covered by the BBC, the Guardian, Independent and ABC News.
I touch on points for all business owners to consider when allowing their staff to speak on behalf of the Company, and when it may be better to stay away from social media.

How to build an outsourced, and offshored, PR program, and what is Bernay's sauce. Jun 10, 2020

How can an entrepreneur build a PR program themselves, or outsource, or use a blended strategy for PR in the say way that Apple does with their design, manufacture and retail model?
Edward L. Bernays." in an interview conducted in honour of his 100th birthday, that "any dope, any nitwit, any idiot, can call him or herself a public relations practitioner."
