The Unbusy Mom: Because you’re ambitious, you want to grow your business, and you still want a life.

You’re ambitious. You want the money, the challenge, the launches, the strategy, the satisfaction of figuring out a hard problem and thinking, yep, I nailed that.

So how did we end up here?

Working all day and still not getting to the thing you actually wanted to do. Feeling pulled in a million directions. Putting your own projects off again. Being the CEO of your business and somehow also the COO of everybody else’s life.

‘Cause you can make the launch work. The kids’ schedules work. The team work. The Sunday night work. The vacation-with-the-laptop work.

You can make almost anything work.

Until you look up and think… wait. Why am I doing all of this?

I’m Alyssa, and I’ve spent a lot of time figuring out how to build a business I love without making my entire life revolve around keeping it running.

On The Unbusy Mom, we’re going to question some of the things you’ve probably accepted as just how business works.

We’ll talk about motherhood, ambition, Human Design, time management, delegation, productivity…. And the invisible responsibilities that make your business feel heavier than it needs to be.

I.e., what actually has to change when you want a business AND a life. Because I don’t think you’re here to prove how much you can carry.

Because I don’t think you’re here to prove how much you can carry.

You wanted it all – business AND kids.

So you’re going to have to make some changes to the structure of the one you’ve already got.

How to triage your to-do list as a business owning mom: should you knock out all those little tasks, or push them off to another day? Dec 20, 2021
    Show notes

    We’ve all been there….

    · Do I really have to do that?

    · Couldn’t I just skip out on this today?

    · Is the sky actually going to fall just because I didn’t ____ (dust the fan, organize the hall closet, or whatever task is on your “should” list today)?

Well, it’s time to clear your to-do lists once and for all, ladies.

No more mile-long running reminders for you!

You deserve a pared-down list of priorities that can actually get done in the time allotted.

    What you’ll learn:

    · How to decide if you should keep this task on your to-do list

    · Is it stressing you out to have it hanging over your head?

    · Your mental health is more important than crossing off an arbitrary number of to-do’s

You’re not responsible for getting everything in the world done.

Let me say that again. You are not responsible to do every single thing that every single podcast you ever listened to tells you to do.

    Deep breath, now.

This is your life. Your choosing. And yes, your task list.

So tell me, what are you deleting today?

You guys have all heard the definition of insanity attributed to Einstein, right?

You know, the one that goes like this: “The definition of insanity is doing things the same way and expecting a different outcome.”

    That one.

So, where are you doing that in your own life, right now?

Going about your week, or day, or year in the exact same way – and still expecting that one day the magic will strike, and everything will work again?

    You see, here’s the key.

You have to actually get up and do something different.

    What you’ll learn:

    · The definition of insanity in your #momlife

    · If life by itself is too hard, something needs to get deleted

    · Then I want you to add something back in – white space

Time by yourself, in sweet peace and quiet, to take a deep breath.

That’s what you need to really succeed in life. #Momlife, especially. And I want you to find it.

Because going from here, life right now, to there? (AKA, your dream life.)

    It’s going to take change.

No more insanity for you, my mom friend. It’s time to press delete.

Where do you need to try something different today?

How to calm your mind when you can’t shake the anxiety as a work-from-home mom around recurring triggers in your life Dec 20, 2021
    Show notes

You know, sometimes life just isn’t working.

Despite all the forward action, pre-prepping, and positive mindset shifts, you’re still dealing with all-encompassing anxiety about that one issue.

    Maybe it’s your birth choices.

    Maybe it’s a parenting disagreement.

Maybe it’s what to do about a diagnosis.

Even something as mundane as a new eating plan.

Whatever the specifics of your life scenario, I know one thing for certain:

Sometime the heaviness just keeps coming back.

    And back. And back.

And it seems like there’s nothing you can do about it.

What should you do in these situations?

    What you’ll learn:

    · Give yourself space to feel the emotions and let the peace come

    · It isn’t a magic process of “talk it out once and you’re good to go”

    · Do something to get ahead of the curve (aka, play defense for repeated triggers)

There’s no reason to flail around trying to invent the wheel every time when it’s a repeating drama.

You can play defense by planning to use that playlist, bring up a meditation app, or stashing a journal in with those innumerable medical papers.

Why not? It’s going to help you change your life. (At least around this one recurrent issue.)

What concrete action can you take to relieve some of the heaviness that’s in your life right now?

    You’ve got this!

Why I prefer a digital to-do list and planner as a mompreneur - but why you might work better with paper over electronic scheduling tools! Dec 20, 2021
    Show notes

Let me ask you: Are you a paper girl or a digital-all-the-way die-hard?

I’d have to say I love paper – but I refuse to use a traditional planner.

Instead, I live by my digital to-do lists, menu plans, and Gmail calendars.

If you’re curious about why I made that choice, keep reading….

    What you’ll learn:

    · My top reason for preferring electronic to paper is that I love deleting what I’ve finished

    · Digital to-do lists are endlessly customizable

    · Employing a digital task list is very paper saving (not to mention space!)

Should you use a paper planner or go digital?

It all depends on your top priority. If you love the feel and use of actual paper products, fill up that journal and have fun.

If you’re like me, and you want the neatest, most sleek-and-minimal aesthetic possible (and don’t mind being tied to a digital device), then go electronic.

It’s all about which way works best for you – as it should be.

After all, if you’re not using that to-do list, is it really doing you much good?

Give it a try in the other dimension (physical vs. electronic) if you can’t ever seem to get anything done.

Or confirm yourself in your life-long affinity for paper products/love affair with digital if you’ve got a system that works.

    You’ve got this!

Conquering the chaos at home: a how-to guide when you're also running a business (aka, what to do when your husband and kids are home with you all day and messing up your routines) Dec 20, 2021
    Show notes

So. The kids are home, you’re home, your husband’s home – and you have no idea what you’re going to do with the kids all day.

It sounds like chaos to you, actually. (Since we’re being real here….)

There goes your nice, comfortable routine. No coffee in quiet; no peaceful lunches; no baby-and-me tickle sessions on the floor.

Instead, you’ll have everyone begging for a sip of your drink, the noise of a hundred voices raised in arguments over how their sandwiches were cut (or the leftovers you chose to serve that day), and the moment you get down on the floor to play with the baby by himself? Everyone piles on!

Yikes. No wonder we don’t want the kids back from school.

No wonder sometimes we rethink this whole “work from home” flex arrangement.

No wonder we just need a break.

But if this is you, and the kids aren’t going away (‘cause let’s be real – summer camp doesn’t cover all of summer!), let’s do something about it.

Let’s find out how to thrive at home when your routine is upended.

    What you’ll learn:

    · First thing: track your new normal

    · What’s the real problem? Think root level here

    · Find new solutions to new problems (even if they’re temporary ones)

All you need to do is try something. If it doesn’t work, no big deal! Just pick the next solution from your list and give that a go.

Really, it doesn’t have to be so hard.

We don’t have to strive to be perfect from the get go.

We’re allowed to just feel things through.

We’re human – and so are your kids. It’s perfectly natural to wish they’d give you peace and quiet.

So why don’t we set up your day, add some structure and boundaries, so that you do get what you need, instead of just whining about it?

That’s what an action-taker does. And I know you’re one of them.

What are you going to change today?

Overwhelmed by your day-to-day mompreneur life? Try these 3 simple steps to banish your overwhelm and reclaim your mental balance as a working mom! Dec 20, 2021
    Show notes

How many days this week have you reached the end of your reserves, looked at your to-do list, and kept right on going?

Probably most days. Am I right?

There’s a way to quit running on fumes – to make sure you get what you need, too – and it doesn’t involve pushing through empty.

Here are three tips you can put into practice right now to say goodbye to exhaustion, forever.

    What you’ll learn:

    · Your first task: pay attention to your normal energy flow

    · Now that you’ve gotten your data, analyze for patterns

    · Once you see your own patterns, it’s time to play offense

There you go. You know how to pull yourself out of mommy exhaustion mode, now.

So what are you going to try today?

Will you tackle the mid-morning breakdown, the post-lunch stress point, or the naptime nadir? Just pick one thing for today, and try it.

Tomorrow, evaluate how that went for you and try something else. You’ll soon see a pattern of what works for you (and your family), and what isn’t quite right.

And one day soon, those days of running and running while your gas tank hovers on empty? Those will be over. Gone. Bye bye.

A receding memory that you’re glad to leave behind.

So tell me, what are you changing today?

Having kids didn't wreck your ability to run a successful business – here’s why you need to stop believing that myth and get going! Dec 20, 2021
    Show notes

Ever think back to your life before kids?

Ever wonder how you possibly thought you were snowed under with tasks, responsibilities, and obligations, with never enough free time?

Yeah, that’s a laugh. Try motherhood, you mentally tell your former self.

But since you’re here – since you have those kids, and this life – what say we do a little mindset work and reframe your expectations?

After all, having kids didn’t wreck your life. They’re not to blame for every ounce of overwhelm and piece of pressure.

No, you are the one who chose to respond that way. To see your choices as “overwhelm” or “frustration,” with no third option.

So we need to start with you.

    What you’ll learn:

    · Reset your expectations (compared to life without kids)

    · Gauge where your family’s at (aka, season in life)

    · Guard your free time (to avoid mommy burnout)

    There it is.

That’s the key to success, to retraining your mindset post-kids.

Because you still have a good life – a great one. You just have to reframe your expectations.

You can get past survival mode to thrive in #momlife mode.

The fastest route to fewer chores for you when you're working from home! Hint: it involves delegating to your kids Dec 20, 2021
    Show notes

Want to know the fastest way to get rid of your chores?

Dump them on the kids. (I’m only half-joking here.)

Seriously – the quickest route to you doing less work as a mom is to get other people in on the game.

To turn yourself into a middle manager of sorts who helps other people (like, little people) get chores done while you yourself don’t lift a finger in the process.

(Okay, okay, you will have to lift those fingers as you’re demonstrating the correct way to spray the mirror.)

    Interested? I thought so.

Let’s take a closer look at the chore delegation process.

    What you’ll learn:

    · The first thing you want to do is make a comprehensive list of what you’re doing

    · Why are you the person dusting the bookshelves? Does it have to be you?

    · You need more help, they need more life skills.

And presto, you’ve got your new system! One where you’re doing far fewer chores than you used to.

Think about it – life without a mountain of housekeeping, cooking, and maintenance chores every single day.

Doesn’t that sound enticing? Isn’t that worth working toward?

I’d say it is – and I bet you would do.

So write up that chore list, parcel it out between the kids (and yourself – sharp knives, remember?), and put in the work upfront to teach them how to do everything.

    Your delegation strategy is succeeding.
