Episode 568: Marine Colonel to Mental Health Advocate with Robert Macpherson Dec 16, 2021
    Show notes

My guest today Robert Macpherson (no relation to myself!) was a career infantry officer in the U.S. Marines with service in Vietnam, Iraq, and Somalia. After retiring as a Colonel, he enjoyed a second career with the humanitarian organization CARE. Now Robert is a mental health advocate particularly for humanitarian aid workers and those who work on the frontlines.
After Robert was diagnosed with PTSD, he received a gift. He reached out to the Southeastern Guide Dogs in Florida and was partnered with Blue. Robert and Blue will be featured in the cover story, America’s Best Pet Pals, of Reader’s Digest October issue, based on an essay Robert wrote about Blue.
A longer version of the essay is here on their website: https://www.rd.com/article/ptsd-dog-for-veteran/.

Episode 567.5: Trusting In Our Perfect Imperfection with Guy Macpherson, PhD Dec 13, 2021
    Show notes

I've been doing this podcast now for a few years and I continue to love it. I love it because I get to speak with incredible people who have dedicated their lives to helping those who've been impacted by trauma.
One of the things that inspires me during these interviews is when I learn about that element or experience or journey that served to compel my guest to do this work. This usually has little to do with trauma interventions or techniques, and more about the period of time when my guests realize that the path of healing involves the recognition of humanity--within themselves as well as their client's.
In this episode I share a bit about my own struggles during my time in graduate school, and feeling as though I needed to hide behind knowledge while all along refusing to trust myself and simply be myself and of how I was able to turn that around.

Episode 564: We've forgotten that we live in our bodies with Jan Winhall, MSW Nov 29, 2021
    Show notes

My guest today, Jan Winhall of Focusing on Borden, began her career as social worker and psychotherapist 40 years ago.
[CW for text below: mention of self-harming behaviors]
She began listening with non-pathologizing ears and heard shocking stories of sexual torture, and responses that confused her. Women were cutting themselves, bingeing and purging huge quantities of food, and abusing drugs and alcohol.
As she continued to listen she learned that somehow these self-harming behaviors were “helping” individuals to escape intolerable emotional states. They were shifting their mood from flooding anxiety to numbing deadness, or vice versa.
Because these behaviors were so helpful they were compulsively repeated and often became addictions. They were shifting their mood from flooding anxiety to numbing deadness, or vice versa.
Jan’s book Treating Trauma and Addiction with The Felt Sense Polyvagal Model: A Bottom Up Approach, has integrated the Polyvagal lens Theory to create a more sophisticated way of understanding emotional regulation, where addictive behavior is an embodied response to emotional dysregulation.
