    Reduced to a screaming seven-year-old Jun 29, 2021
    Show notes

Jimbo, Carl Anka and Daniel Storey try and make sense of quite possibly the greatest day of tournament football ever.

Switzerland knock out world champions France on penalties after a 3-3 draw in Bucharest. We try to explain the magnificence of Xhaka and Pogba. And would France have fared better with Laporte?

Speaking of Laporte, his Spanish side beat Croatia 5-3 after extra time. How to explain a free-scoring team with a struggling striker?

England and Germany face off at Wembley on Tuesday. Raphael Honigstein tells us why he’s worried about German improv up against a heavily rehearsed England.

Plus Sweden Ukraine, Dutch despair from 2000 and attempting to explain the own goal epidemic.

    Show notes

Jimbo welcomes Michael Cox and Duncan Alexander into the pod after a day of illuminating action at the Euros.

Czech Republic hog the headlines by eliminating the Netherlands in the first shock of the last 16. But are they still the weakest team in the competition? And can Frank De Boer be blamed for the crazy mistakes of his players?

Number 1 ranked Belgium knock out holders Portugal, in a game signposted by selfishness and stroppiness. And it’s time to bust the myth that Ronaldo is good at free-kicks.

It’s another big day of action. Juraj Vrdoljak tells us whether Croatia fear Spain, the team that inflicted their heaviest defeat ever. And Julien Laurens previews France v Switzerland, as Pogba looks to build on his position as perhaps the player of the tournament so far.

Plus we appreciate Balotelli, Cassano and Prandelli 9 years on.

    Show notes

Jimbo’s back and he’s brought Sasha Goryunov and Tom Williams with him as the knockout stages of Euro 2020 get underway.

Denmark dismantle Wales 4-0 in Amsterdam as their fairy-tale continues to the quarter-finals. Niels Harild tells us why the Danes are daring to dream of a repeat of 1992. What will Gareth Bale do next? International football only? Golf?

Italy need extra time to eliminate Austria at Wembley, with the beaten side showing just how good they are.

Having seen glimpses of Belgium at their best, will we be able to see a classic with Portugal on the worst pitch at the tournament in Seville?

And with no side showing themselves to be completely dominant, Michiel Jongsma fancies the Netherlands to go to the semi-finals as pessimism is replaced by arrogance.

Plus England 1-2 Iceland – five years on.

    RUNNING ORDER:

    • PART 1: Wales 0-4 Denmark with Niels Harild (03m 30s)

Big club football Jun 24, 2021
    Show notes

Matt Davies Adams, Daniel Storey and Adam Crafton are here on the day of goals and destiny in the Euros.

In Group F, F stood for fun as each team at some stage were bottom of the table or facing England in the next round.

In Group E, we weren't expecting too much but Spain came to have a fiesta, with a hand from Martin Dubravka, whilst Sweden and Poland put on a five goal thriller. So have Spain finally arrived?

And now all eyes turn to the Round of 16 which kicks off on Saturday with Wales v Denmark with the former left asking "are we the badies?" And we try to work out if there's any way past Italy for Austria.

All that plus a dive into UEFA's "politics", some Euro 2004 action, and our updated predictions.

    Show notes

Matt Davies Adams, Tom Williams, and Daniel Storey are here as England top Group D and as Scotland bid farewell to their first tournament in 23 years.

So Scotland are out but what does it mean? We ask The Athletic's Jordan Campbell who's live at Hampden for his reflections on a heartbreaking night for the Tartan Army.

More positive scenes over at Wembley though, well for 12 minutes anyway, as Sterling netted again and England top the group and look at facing, erm, France/Germany/Portugal/Hungary!

Speaking of which tomorrow is today and today is the last day of the group stages, and there are still two groups to sort out. Namely Group E and F where it's looking concerning for Spain and rather brighter for Germany.

All that plus we hit a few bum notes.

    RUNNING ORDER

    • PART 1: Heroes to Villains (01m 30s)
    • PART 2a: Scotland 1-3 Croatia with Jordan Campbell (03m 30s)
    • PART 2b: England 1-0 Czech Republic (12m 30s)
    • PART 3a: Wembley capacity (24m 30s)
    • PART 3b: Spain v Slovakia preview with Alvaro Romeo (28m 00s)
    • PART 3c: Sweden v Poland preview (35m 30s)

An Aldi own brand Pep Guardiola Jun 22, 2021
    Show notes

Matt Davies Adams, Rory Smith, and Sasha Goryunov are here as Denmark make their mark on this tournament and squeeze into the next stage whilst Austria find their fast flowing football.

Copenhagen was the place to be on Monday night as Denmark scored four magnificent goals to set up their place in the round of 16. Whilst Finland gave Belgium a run for their money before Lukaku turned the fireworks on. Plus we had one of the most memorable moments of the tournament so far - and VAR was involved in a positive way!

In Group C it's Ukraine who are left wondering if they're in or out, and we waved goodbye to tournament cult hero Goran Pandev with an emotional guard of honour.

Up next it's England v Czech Republic and Croatia v Scotland where it's "you finish second" "no, you finish second" at Wembley and win at all costs in Hampden. And where Covid 19 is wreaking havoc with protocols as Billy Gilmour is out and it's a bit of a confusion over Mount and Chilwell for England.

All that plus there's a rather special 'On This Day' for Matt - and we find out that his dog has a middle name....

    RUNNING ORDER

    • PART 1: Drama or no drama? (01m 30s)
    • PART 2a: Denmark 4-1 Russia (05m 30s)
    • PART 2b: Belgium 2-0 Finland (14m 00s)
    • PART 3a: Austria 1-0 Ukraine (21m 30s)
    • PART 3b: Netherlands 3-0 North Macedonia (24m 30s)

    Show notes

Matt Davies-Adams welcomes Duncan Alexander and Robyn Cowen into the pod as Wales progress to the knockout stages.

Robert Page’s side lose 1-0 in Rome but are still safely in the last 16. Are good-looking lads Italy the new tournament favourites? Are Turkey the worst dark horses ever?

Groups B and C will conclude on Monday. Ari Virtanen dares to dream of Finland upsetting Belgium and advancing to the next round.

It’s a chance for the likes of Lukaku, Yarmolenko and Dumfries to boost their Golden Boot hopes. And a chance to say goodbye Goran Pandev.

Plus some Arshavin on this day and what Torquay and Hartlepool did to steal the show on Sunday.

    Show notes

Matt Davies-Adams is joined by Lynsey Hooper and Tom Williams after arguably the most exciting day of action yet at Euro 2020.

Germany bounce back from defeat to France with a 4-1 thrashing of Portugal. Never write them off. Are the holders in danger of elimination at the group stage?

Hungary cause their own upset by holding world champions France in Budapest. Should Les Bleus be concerned about the lack of goals from Karim Benzema?

Speaking of a lack of goals, Spain toil to another draw, this time with Poland. Alvaro Romeo identifies the reasons behind their struggles. From the weather to fan apathy.

Group A concludes on Sunday with Wales travelling to Rome to face Italy and confirm their place in the next round. Will the likes of Ramsey, Bale and Ward impress again?

    Plus Seaman’s laugh, Foden’s flick, and Sousa’s fashion faux-pas.
