After the devastating tragedies of Chapter 21, we get…more devastating tragedies! Chapter 22 picks up with Húrin, now old and worn out by Morgoth’s tortures. Set free to wander aimlessly in the wasted regions of Beleriand, he inadvertently sets in motion a series of events that will lead to end of the kingdom of Doriath, once the hidden heart of Beleriand’s free regions.

Join us for an in-depth discussion as we explore "Of Túrin Turambar", the 21st chapter of JRR Tolkien's The Silmarillion. Learn about the tragic tale of the ill-fated son of Húrin, one of the Great Tales of Middle-earth's First Age!
WATCH THE VIDEO» https://youtu.be/ekQQ69g6J8E

The tale of Túrin Turambar is a long one, rivaling “Of Beren and Lúthien” and “Akallabêth” as the longest chapter in The Silmarillion. It is also quite tragic, as we shall see. After giving a bit of background on Túrin’s ancestry, it picks up where the last chapter left off, with Túrin’s father Húrin imprisoned in Angband. The chapter then focuses in on Túrin’s life.
Like “Of Beren and Lúthien”, this chapter summarizes one of the Great Tales of the First Age. In fact, many of you may already realize that The Children of Húrin is a novel length telling of this story! We look forward to a chapter-by-chapter discussion of The Children of Húrin in 2023.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK » "Then Glaurung died, and the veil of his malice was taken from [Nienor], and she remembered all the days of her life. Looking down upon Túrin she cried: ‘Farewell, O twice beloved! A Túrin Turambar turun ambartanen: master of doom by doom mastered! O happy to be dead!’ " - Silmarillion Ch 21

This is our 300th episode! Given that, I decided it was time to look back on this journey, and see how far we’ve come, and reflect on everything behind us.
It struck me that, especially in the last few years, I’ve been moving at such a hurried pace that I haven’t taken enough time to do that, to simply look back and ask myself “Has this been worth it? Why am I doing this?”
In episode 300, you'll learn how the podcast came to be, where we're going, and the role we believe Tolkien plays in it personally.

Chapter 19 is the story of Beren and Lúthien, aka The Tale of Tinúviel, aka The Lay of Leíthian, aka one of the Great Tales of the First Age and the Seed of Middle-earth. Simply put, this is one of Tolkien’s greatest stories, a story that in many ways informs the entirety of the Middle-earth legendarium.

It is a fair tale, though it is sad, as are all the tales of Middle-earth, and yet it may lift up your hearts.’" - Lord of the Rings, Book 1, Chapter 11
