What was the purpose of Númenor? In this episode, we explore that question through the lens of the song of Númenor.
Many of you know that I have argued that Númenor’s purpose went beyond being a mere reward for the descendants of the Edain, and seemed to be filled with symbolism and rituals intended to point them to a greater destiny both in this world and beyond it.
"Lovely is Númenor. But my heart resteth not here for ever;
for here is ending, and there will be an end and the Fading,
when all is counted, and all numbered at last,
but yet it will not be enough, not enough.
What will the Father, O Father, give me in that day beyond the end when my Sun faileth?"

2022 was a pretty busy year for this podcast and for Tolkiendom on a broad scale! It was pretty intense to cover both The Silmarillion and The Rings of Power.
And, to quote Bilbo, it's made me feel like butter scraped over too much bread. I may have been TOO HASTY at times!
There’s so much Tolkien still to cover. And to re-read!
But sometimes you need to slow down and breath a little deeper...

In a 1963 letter, we find this remarkable line from Tolkien:
“Frodo indeed ‘failed’.”
What did he mean by that? Is there a deeper message that Tolkien himself took away from writing the scene of Frodo’s failure? What bits of wisdom can we glean from Tolkien’s commentary on Frodo’s failure at Mt Doom?
We’ll dive into these questions and seek to understand what deeper truths about mercy, justice, and suffering Tolkien took away from the stark reality of Frodo’s failure.

TOLKIEN, 1957: "You will receive on Monday the copy of the ‘Story Line’ or synopsis of the proposed film version of The Lord of the Rings. I could not get it off yesterday. . . . . An abridgement by selection with some good picture-work would be pleasant, & perhaps worth a good deal in publicity; but the present script is rather a compression with resultant over-crowding and confusion, blurring of climaxes, and general degradation: a pull-back towards more conventional ‘fairy-stories’. People gallop about on Eagles at the least provocation; Lórien becomes a fairy-castle with ‘delicate minarets’, and all that sort of thing."

This final chapter of The Silmarillion is really something completely separate from the rest of the book: an Age-spanning synopsis of the events leading up to and including The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. With this chapter, Tolkien connects the legends of The Silmarillion with the events of The Lord of the Rings, and we learn a great deal of the historical background to Tolkien’s magnum opus. Join us!
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
from Christopher Tolkien's Foreword to The Silmarillion...
"[Akallabêth and Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age] are included according to my father’s explicit intention, and by their inclusion the entire history is set forth from the Music of the Ainur in which the world began to the passing of the Ringbearers from the Havens of Mithlond at the end of the Third Age."

With Morgoth having been finally defeated in the War of Wrath, the Men allied with the Elves of Beleriand are rewarded with an earthly paradise: the Island of Númenor. Yet over the course of a 3300 year history, the Men of Númenor tragically discover that the soul of Man desires things that the natural world cannot provide.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
from The Waldman Letter (#131)...
"The Downfall is partly the result of an inner weakness in Men – consequent, if you will, upon the first Fall, repented but not finally healed. Reward on earth is more dangerous for men than punishment! The Fall is achieved by the cunning of Sauron in exploiting this weakness. Its central theme is (inevitably, I think, in a story of Men) a Ban, or Prohibition."

With Morgoth having crushed the great kingdoms of Beleriand, the remnant and hope of Middle-earth stands upon the edge of oblivion. It is the hour for the fulfillment of prophecy, and out of this peril heroic deeds shine forth!
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
from The Silmarillion Chapter 23...
Great was the sorrow of Eärendil and Elwing for the ruin of the havens of Sirion, and the captivity of their sons, and they feared that they would be slain; but it was not so. For Maglor took pity upon Elros and Elrond, and he cherished them, and love grew after between them, as little might be thought; but Maglor’s heart was sick and weary with the burden of the dreadful oath.
