325 - Visual Empathy: A Conversation with Aeron and Tracy Brown Feb 22, 2022
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

For many people who grew up in the church, shame is a constant companion. If we don’t fit into this perfect mold that is expected of us, we fear that we’re not good enough, that we’re not worthy of the love that God has promised us.

So we try harder to be “perfect” - to feel like we are worthy of God’s favor.

But in the wise words of Brené Brown, “When perfectionism is driving us, shame is riding shotgun, and fear is the annoying backseat driver.”

I’ve met so many artists who find themselves stuck in that car with the doors locked, unable to free themselves from the expectations of others…and of themselves.

But there’s a key that unlocks the door and frees us from fear, perfectionism, and shame:

Empathy. Shame cannot survive in the face of empathy.

Aeron and Tracy Brown, my guests on this episode of the Thriving Christian Artist podcast, use their visual artwork in a unique and profound way - to show visual empathy to those who are struggling. To help others know that they are seen, that they are worthy, and that there is hope.

I can’t wait for you to meet this precious couple who are so in love with their art, each other, and the Lord, and to learn more about how they’re wielding the power of vulnerability and visual empathy to combat shame and fear in their own lives and in the lives of others.

You can connect with Tracy and Aeron at their website at https://www.aeronbrown.art/ or on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/aeronbrownart/.

324 - 5-Minute Mentoring: 5 Differences Between Creating FOR God and Creating WITH God Feb 18, 2022
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

I talk a lot about prophetic art - the idea of creating art with God as a part of our creative process.

But as wonderful as it sounds, sometimes it may be easier said than done, especially if the concept is new to you.

We often get caught up in creating FOR God - in creating art that will glorify Him, that we hope will represent His goodness and His greatness to help others know Him.

And while there’s nothing wrong with wanting to honor God with your art, sometimes that desire can backfire. It can create an extra level of pressure, putting us in a place of paralysis or uncertainty.

On this latest episode of 5-Minute Mentoring, we’re talking about 5 differences between creating FOR God and creating WITH God…and how you can make that shift in your own work and life.

Want to learn more about creating with the Lord so you can start thriving spiritually, artistically, and financially? Here are 3 ways I can help:

323 - Why Who You Know Matters: A Conversation with Sophie Dare Feb 15, 2022
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Years ago, when I was just out of school and looking for a job, a family friend told me that for many opportunities in life, “It’s all about who you know!” As a young, idealistic college graduate with my newly minted diploma, I wanted to argue - “No, it’s all about what you know and the results you can produce! I should be hired based on merit and talent - not on connections!”

The truth is somewhere in the middle, but I can promise you this - in almost every major milestone in my life, “who” I knew played a major role.

In life and in business, relationships are everything.

In our fast-paced, online world, it’s so easy to get caught up in growing our social media followings that it’s easy to forget that those numbers don’t mean anything without true, authentic connection.

Listen to this week’s episode of the Thriving Christian Artist podcast as muralist Sophie Dare and I chat about how to start and cultivate relationships both online and off to help grow your business, your impact, and your faith.

Be sure to connect with Sophie at instagram.com/sophie.dare.designs or on her website at sophiedare.com.

322 - 5-Minute Mentoring: How To Discover Your Unique Artistic Voice Feb 11, 2022
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

When I wove my first basket, I literally went “by the book.” I used the same materials, the same weaving technique, and came out with the same basket as a result. Since it was my first experience with weaving, that feeling that I’d done it properly was key to me creating my next basket, and my next. And I’ve never stopped 😊

When we begin learning something new - whether it’s working in a new medium, trying a new technique, or wading into new subject matter - most of us start by emulating existing art or artists. Not only is this totally normal - it’s a vital part of the learning process.

But replication isn’t about copying another artist. It’s about honing your own sense of technique, aesthetic, and what is beautiful. We learn through doing, and by emulating the work of others, we actually experience what it takes to create that shadow, throw that vessel on the wheel, or write that next meaningful line..

Emulation and replication are important legs of every artist’s creative journey - but they’re not the destination.

So how do you find your unique style and voice as an artist? That’s what we’re talking about on this episode of 5-Minute Mentoring!

321 - What is NFT Art? - A Conversation with Patrick Bezalel & Lily Chia Feb 08, 2022

NFTs. Bitcoin. Crypto. Blockchain. The Metaverse. You can barely turn on the news or look at social media without running across one of these terms, and if you’re like me, you have more questions than answers. 😖

And then, what do all of these have to do with art? How do you sell digital art? What does that process look like? 🤷‍♂️

That’s exactly what I wanted to know. So after some overwhelming Google research, I knew I needed to talk to experts…and that led me to this week’s podcast guests and my new friends, Patrick Bezalel and Lily Chia.

Patrick and Lily, a married couple from Singapore, are artists and entrepreneurs who are leading the way in not only creating and selling digital art but in helping other artists discover how to use this technology to create, sell, and use their digital art to spread the Word of the Lord throughout the world.

Join me, Patrick, and Lily as they help me navigate this exciting new world of NFT art on this week’s episode of the Thriving Christian Artist podcast!

    320 - 5-Minute Mentoring: Stop Asking Permission to Create Feb 04, 2022
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

It all started with a book called “Willow Basketry” that I got from the University of Georgia bookstore where I worked.

In fact, I didn’t really think of myself as an artist then - I’d spent more time creating and performing music, not art.

But something about that book caught my eye. I’d never woven anything before, but I was willing to give it a try. And I had acres of kudzu vine behind my apartment. It was destiny! (Ah, the boldness of youth…).

Looking back, I’m thankful that I found that book…and that I was willing to take a risk on making baskets, even though I wasn’t very good at the beginning.

That decision (and that book) changed everything for me.

But I see so many emerging artists who are so fearful of “doing it wrong” that they struggle to try something new, worried that their worth as an artist is tied to the outcome of their efforts.

In this episode of 5-Minute Mentoring, we’re talking about how the constant need for permission can actually paralyze you and stunt your development as an artist…and what to do instead to walk in your journey with the Lord.

Growing as an artist doesn’t have to feel risky, especially if you have the right support. If you’re ready to start thriving spiritually, artistically, and financially, here are 3 ways I can help:

318 - 5-Minute Mentoring: The Key to Achieving Your Goals in 2022 Jan 28, 2022
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Do you get excited about the promise and potential of the new year? Does the smell of a new planner bring you joy? Do you make your big goals, write them on your calendar, and dream of how amazing your life will be once you’ve accomplished those goals?

I’m all about dreaming big…but I’m not all about idealizing or romanticizing a dream that is so big that it’s not actually attainable. That just sets you up for failure right out of the gate.

Remember the wise words of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry: “A goal without a plan is just a wish.”

Instead, I’m a big fan of setting 90-day goals with intention and with specific action steps. It’s so much fun to see our Created to Thrive students go from feeling overwhelmed by what God’s vision is for them to feeling confident they have a solid plan, some milestone dates, and the support of our community to get it done!

Plus, once you cross those first few steps off your to-do list, the snowball starts rolling down the hill and gaining momentum! Look out, world - here you come!

So as you set your goals this year, dream big - but plan small, actionable steps that can help you truly make progress towards your 2022 goals…and beyond!

Setting, working towards, and achieving your goals is key to living and growing as a thriving artist. If you’re ready to start thriving spiritually, artistically, and financially, here are 3 ways I can help:

317 - Impact vs Influence: A Conversation with Ray Hughes Part 2 Jan 25, 2022
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

In our recent chat, Ray Hughes said something that struck me almost speechless:
“Why does something have to ‘be’ something before it becomes something else?”
Ray was speaking in particular about the words and impressions that he captures in his leather journal as he goes throughout his day, snapshots of a landscape, a stranger, a feeling he experiences.
Maybe those words will turn into a song. Maybe they’ll evolve into a poem. Or maybe they’ll just be…without becoming something else. But the important part is that they’re allowed to be in the first place.
When you sit down to create, do you have the end in mind? Do you think about the result you want to achieve, or do you let the paints, clay, words, or music become what they are meant to be?
For this episode of the Thriving Christian Artist podcast, I’m back with the second half of my interview of the delightful, inspirational Ray Hughes!
