345 - Glorifying God In The Gig Economy: A Conversation with Allen Paul May 03, 2022

Truth time: God doesn’t want you to be comfortable. He isn’t a La-Z-Boy salesman.

If you’re too comfortable, you’re not moving forward…and God’s going to start poking you until you do.

Allen Paul found that out in his life when he was secure in his jobs as a teacher and at a church…but God wouldn’t stop poking him. Allen had financial security, but he just knew he wasn’t doing what God was calling him to do.

The only solution was to leave that security behind and trust God to show him the way forward.

Now, after experiencing the ups and downs of finding his way in the gig economy, Allen has his love of music, teaching, and ministering all working together, the way God intended. And he’s using his experience to help other musicians and artists learn the things Allen wished he had known when he was starting out, through his multi-platform ministry, God And Gigs.

Listen to Allen’s story of how he has walked THROUGH the valleys in his life, and kept on walking, trusting God to light the way, on this episode of the Thriving Christian Artist podcast!

Back in the day, when I was working on staff at churches, I was the “creative guy” - which meant that I was the default graphic designer of the group!

Now, truth be told, this was NOT my area of expertise, but I dove into Adobe Photoshop and slogged my way through it. Let’s just say that it was…a challenge. 😆

Luckily, technology has come a long way since then, and tools like Canva make it MUCH easier for artists and business owners like us to create top-notch, professional marketing materials, from social media graphics to flyers to rack cards…and so much more!

On this episode of 5-Minute Mentoring, I’m sharing 5 reasons why you NEED to be using Canva to support you in the creation of graphics for marketing your art business!

Have you ever met somebody whose art is so fascinating and who is so enthusiastic about it that it makes you want to immediately run out and try it yourself?

That’s exactly what happens when you talk to my friend Frances Syverson!

Frances uses techniques from beading to metal-smithing to create jewelry that is just fabulous!

And while she does sell her jewelry, the real joy she gets with her art is in the making - and in teaching others how to make it themselves. Whether it’s friends and family, church members, or kids at the school where she works as a media specialist, she is always happy to pass along this skill that brings her so much happiness.

That’s why I’m so excited that Frances will be teaching at this year’s Gathering of Artisans. She’s teaching sessions on metal stamping and making copper earrings - including using flame to create a patina and other exciting techniques. No experience is needed - but her classes are filling up fast!

Expanding our artistic horizons by trying new media and techniques is so valuable to our development as artists - and these new skills and experiences can take your art in directions you never imagined. But you have to be there! Register now at www.GatheringofArtisans.com and sign up for Frances’s workshops!

342 - 5-Minute Mentoring: Why Artists Need an Email List Apr 22, 2022

Show notes

Remember a few months ago when Facebook and Instagram went down for a full day? Panic ensued!

While some users were upset they couldn’t share their Wordle results, others - especially business owners - suddenly realized that even though they may have a lot of followers on social media, their ability to communicate with those followers was out of their hands…and that made them feel really uncomfortable.

Social media is great, but the key to building a solid, reliable marketing strategy is to build your email list.

The truth is, email is king. When you have someone’s email address, you have the ability to develop a relationship with them. You control your ability to communicate with them - it’s not in the hands of Facebook or Instagram.

And to build your email list, you need to have an opt-in form on your website. Full stop.

In this episode of 5-Minute Mentoring, we’re talking about how to use an opt-in form to build your email list…and how I turned a $1600 investment in my email list into a $25,000+ launch of my new basketry course!

(Want to see the opt-in form in action? Click the first link below and sign up to receive my free guide, “The 5 Biggest Mistakes Artists Make When Pricing Their Art!”)

341 - The Surprise & Beauty of the Unexpected: A Conversation with Robin Popp Apr 19, 2022

Show notes

Send us Fan Mail

You know when two things (or people) come together unexpectedly and you think, “Wow…that makes so much sense!”?

That’s kind of what has happened in my friend Robin Popp’s art life.

She’s an artist to the core, an accomplished, award-winning painter as well as an experienced cabinet and furniture maker. Those two loves existed separately…until she figured out how to bring the two sides of her artistic self together by framing her paintings in custom-built shadow boxes!

In this episode of The Thriving Christian Artist, we talk about what the Lord is doing in her life and her art, and how she uses her creative “play time” to get closer to God.

Robin’s love of creating art also meshes beautifully with her love of teaching art - and we’re so excited to have Robin at Gathering of Artisans this year!

At Gathering of Artisans, she'll be teaching her "Boot Camp for Color Mixing." It’s a great way to learn about how to use and manipulate colors to make your art exactly what you want it to be.

She’ll also be teaching an in-studio landscape class and a class on "building a tree," where you’ll learn how to make a tree look like the species it's supposed to be. Say goodbye to “happy little trees” and hello to “realistic deciduous conifers!”

340 - 5-Minute Mentoring: How To Become An Artist Entrepreneur Apr 15, 2022

Show notes

When you think of a job that provides steady income and security, what do you think of? Toiling away in the offices of a big company? Maybe a bank or a retailer? That sort of thing?

Well, in these days of economic upheaval, layoffs, and business closures, the traditional path to “job security” has turned into a whole lot of uncertainty.

Besides, when you’re an artist at heart, does working a 9-to-5 for somebody else really seem more secure these days than stepping out in faith to do what God is calling you to do?

The truth is, if you feel called to be an artist and put your “security” in God’s hands, you can do it.

Stepping out as an entrepreneur is a leap of faith, but it doesn’t have to be as risky as you might think. When you can align your faith, your art, and your business together, you’ll be on your way to thriving as an artist.

In this episode of 5-Minute Mentoring, I’m going to tell you just how to make that happen!

Christian art has always been a force for the Lord. Paintings, hymns, poetry, sculpture, drama… all the forms of art you can think of have been touched by God to call people to Him. And yet even today, some people don’t understand just how powerful the connection between art and faith really is.

Terry Glaspey is not one of those people.

Terry, my guest on this episode of the Thriving Christian Artist podcast, is an award-winning author, mentor, and seminary professor with a lifetime of art appreciation under his belt.

He understands very well the amazing history and heritage of Christian art and is a strong advocate for building off of that heritage going forward.

On today’s episode of the Thriving Christian Artist podcast, I’m talking to artist, professor, and historian Terry Glaspey, whose new book, Discovering God through the Arts, inspires people to grow closer to God through the appreciation of beauty and creativity.

When you create art for a living, there’s a lot more on the line than when you’re a hobbyist. You can have the same level of enthusiasm with an art business that you had in your hobby days - more, even.

But if your family is counting on the income from you selling your art to put food on the table, that puts a different type of pressure on you and your art.

Naturally, if you’re going to make a living creating art, it has to sell.

So when you’re out there doing your creative thing, how do you know whether you’re going to be able to sell enough art to pay the bills?

In this episode of 5-Minute Mentoring, I’m sharing a list of 5 ways to know if pursuing a full-time art career is right for you.

337 - Raising The Next Generation Of Kingdom-Hearted Artists: A Conversation with Bryn Gillette Apr 05, 2022

It’s always great to reconnect with old friends like Bryn Gillette. If you’re a longtime listener to the podcast, you may remember Bryn from way way back in episode 46.

Bryn is a very talented painter in his own right, but his real calling is in teaching. His day job is teaching visual art and art history at Charlotte Christian School, where he is “raising up a generation of Kingdom-hearted artists.”

I'm also honored that Bryn will be at Gathering of Artisans this year, where he will be "illuminating” us on the topic of “Illuminated Journaling,” which adds an artistic and meditative flavor to the practice of journaling that a lot of people really find beneficial in their spiritual lives.

Listen to this episode of the Thriving Christian Artist podcast for his insights on this fascinating practice, as well as on prophetic painting in front of a live congregation. And register for Gathering of Artisans to take Bryn's classes at www.GatheringofArtisans.com.

If you want to see what Bryn’s up to artistically, you can check out his website or his Instagram:
