Dr. Joe Cobbs: Sports Rivalries Explained - The Science Behind the Fiercest Rivalries in Sports Mar 06, 2020
    Show notes

Sport is full of legendary rivalries: Yankees and Red Sox, Duke and North Carolina Basketball, Lakers and Celtics, Alabama and Auburn, and so many others.

But what, exactly, elevates a competition to the level of rivalry? Is it a defining moment, such as the Christian Laettner buzzer beater that propelled Duke to shatter a thousand dreams across Kentucky during an NCAA Tournament game? Is it simple geography, such as Green Bay's proximity to Chicago? Is it a storied past colliding in the present, as with the Yankees and Red Sox? Or two cities, states or organizations which are so similar that they, much like siblings, can't help but clash (say, Ohio State vs. Michigan)? How about all of the above?

Our guest this week on The Secrets to Winning is the Founder of the Know Rivalry Project Dr. Joe Cobbs, an associate professor of sports business at Northern Kentucky University and former sports marketing executive who dreamed up the "Battle of the Bricks" brand to promote the football rivalry between Miami (OH) and Ohio University. Cobbs developed and leads class on rivalry in international sport at NKU, the first course of its kind in the nation.

Patrick Sweeney: Using Fear as Fuel Feb 21, 2020
    Show notes

There are times in your life when you need to make a change. Often it starts with a shift in mindset, then actions follow. Those times of change become milestone moments that alter everything and you're never the same again. That moment came for this week's guest Patrick Sweeney minutes after almost losing his life against a rare case of Leukemia. Patrick took on the world in his 20's training for the USA Olympic team in rowing, and then when he still felt empty he took on the business world in his 30's and 40's trying to reach 40 by 40 -a net worth of $40 million by 40 years old, thinking it would build confidence and courage. But it didn't. In one moment, Patrick walked away. He'd just fought for his life on an operating table against a rare case of leukemia. In that moment of perspective, as he stood outside the hospital, he decided to fight the fear of the unknown and embrace a different future. One that would bring fulfillment, joy, and happiness. What he discovered was life-changing.

There's an art and skill there. It's not just about putting content out, it's about knowing what resonates. Eric embodies that mindset.

Coaching the 21st Century Athlete Feb 07, 2020
    Show notes

Today's young athletes belong to a group known as Generation Z. While they may be the best-educated generation in history, critics also notice Generation Z's shorter attention spans, need for frequent (positive) feedback, lack of independence, and increased screen time.

So, how can you most effectively coach the 21st century athlete? Explain the 'why', communicate effectively, be direct, precise and immediate feedback, promote resiliency, and promote situations for critical thinking.
