A Real Astrophysicist Reviews The Wandering Earth (2019) Apr 14, 2023

Show notes

The Salty Nerds watch The Wandering Earth, a movie that ignores science so much it's insulting. In what is meant to be a fun, science fiction adventure film, we get one ridiculous scenario after another. Basically a full-fledged Chinese propaganda film based on a similarly propagandistic novel, the movie is about the sun going supernova so the Earth's population builds a bunch of engines to move the planet to a whole new solar system. And hilarity ensues. This movie was so dumb, the Salty Nerds had to invite a real astrophysicist, Dr. Thomas Targett, to come on and explain why this movie has no idea what science is. Salty Nerd Reviews: RAMBO: First Blood (1982) Mar 31, 2023

Show notes

RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD - A veteran Green Beret is forced by a cruel Sheriff and his deputies to flee into the mountains and wage an escalating one-man war against his pursuers.

Whether it's the jail escape or fighting in the jungles of Vietnam, John Rambo is not a man to be trifled with. Unless you're Jude JuJu, then you can badmouth him all you want apparently. Let the Sylvester Stallone hate flow, as the Ambassador of Estrogen lets loose with her disapproval of one of Sly's most iconic films! This is bound to be a controversial review.

Salty Nerd Reviews: Jung_E (2023) Mar 24, 2023

Show notes

Jung_E movie review from the Salty Nerds have them marveling at how good Korean cinema is at making awesome sci-fi movies.

Jung_E takes place on an uninhabitable Earth that has been ravaged by ecological disasters and a drawn-out civil war. Victory hinges on cloning the brain of an elite soldier to create the ultimate robot combat AI. However, corporate politics and greed get in the way, and the daughter of the soldier must now choose between helping the war effort, or her parent.

Yet another hidden gem from Netflix's library of foreign films, Jung_E is a great movie with amazing special effects and a really good heart at the core of its story. If you haven't yet seen this movie, you definitely need to check it out!

Salty Nerd Reviews: 65 (The Dinosaur Movie with Adam Driver) Mar 17, 2023

Show notes

65 movie review from the Salty Nerds has them split on whether this is a good movie or not any why people seem to think Adam Driver is actually a movie star.

In the immortal words of Ian Malcolm "..uh Hello? are there eventually Dinosaurs in your dinosaur tour?"

65 (million years ago) staring Adam Driver is about an astronaut that crash lands on a doomed planet called Earth. He must survive and save a child who survived the crash along with him by dodging "Dinosaurs" of all shapes and sizes. Spoiler - if the dinosaurs don't get you, the boringness will!

Though Sam Raimi produced this movie, it's ultimately not as good as its premise would have you believe. Unfortunately, it's like watching a really long episode of the Mandalorian, only without the cool armor.

What is your 65 movie review? Did you love it? Hate it? Were you able to stay conscious through it? Is Adam Driver swole enough to play anything but Kylo Renn? Let us know on our Discord server here: http://www.saltynerddiscord.com

Salty Nerd Reviews: John Wick (2014) Mar 10, 2023

Show notes

John Wick 2014 movie review by the Salty Nerds lets you know what happens when you kill a man's dog. We have no sympathy for the bad guys in the beginning of this Keanu Reeves action franchise that started off as a sleeper film that grew into a world-wide phenomenon.

With John Wick Chapter 4 looming on the horizon, the Salty Nerds decided to take a look at the OG John Wick and revisit all its awesomeness. Alfie Allen plays the lithesome Russian gangster dog killer. Willem Dafoe plays Wick's guardian angel. John Leguizamo makes a cameo. Adrianne Palicki breaks the rules. And Ian McShane and Lance Reddick are the hosts of New York's finest criminal underworld hotel - The Continental - where business cannot be conducted.

Written by Derek Kolstad and directed by Keanu's stuntman, Chad Stahelski (and David Leitch), John Wick revolutionized how close quarters combat was done in movies, and also introduced the world to "gun fu" in a far better way than that dumb movie Equilibrium.

What is your John Wick 2014 movie review? Did you love it? Hate it? Do you think you're back? Is your dog safe? Let us know on our Discord server here: http://www.saltynerddiscord.com

Salty Nerd Reviews: Better Off Dead (1985) Mar 03, 2023

Show notes

Better Off Dead (1985) Movie Review - join Jude, Alex and Kadish as they gush over this classic 80s high school comedy created by Savage Steve Holland. Where's Vader you might ask? He's off wondering why we haven't reviewed "Porky's" yet.

Better off Dead is a portrayal of high school life in the '80s. John Cusack stars as Lane Meyer, a lovestruck teenager who is crushed when his girlfriend dumps him. To cope with his heartbreak, Lane tries to off himself multiple times, but somehow manages to survive each attempt. As if that's not enough, Lane also finds himself facing off against his ski-racing nemesis in a totally believable and not-at-all-over-the-top competition. Oh, and did we mention there's a wacky French exchange student thrown into the mix?

As Lane navigates these completely normal teenage experiences, he learns valuable life lessons and discovers the true meaning of friendship. All in all, Better off Dead is a relatable coming-of-age tale that accurately captures the struggles of being a teen.

Salty Nerd Reviews: Brahmastra Part One: SHIVA Feb 24, 2023

Show notes

Is Brahmastra Part One: Shiva Bollywood's version of Star Wars? Join the Salty Nerds as we discuss our latest venture into International Film - particularly Indian cinema.

Brahmastra, a 2019 Indian film directed by Ayan Mukerji, is the TOTALLY original story of Shiva, a young man who discovers he has magical powers and is destined to save the world from an ancient evil force. (Wow, we've definitely never heard that one before!) Along with his love interest, Isha, and a group of allies, Shiva sets out on a perilous adventure to find the three pieces of the Brahmastra, because of course, the fate of the world depends a young poor boy to stop a powerful weapon. In a plot that's the classic "Hero's Journey" (like Star Wars), Brahmastra's hero, Shiva, follows in the footsteps of Luke Skywalker, as a young and untrained hero who must go on a quest to save the world from the forces of evil. But instead of finding the Death Star plans, he's looking for the Brahmastra. And just like in Star Wars, there's a strong-willed heroine, Isha, who plays an important role in the adventure. There also may be an evil version of Princess Leia, but that remains to be seen. At least there's no version of Rey Palpatine and her identity stealing shenanigans (yet).

Oh, and the main villain is super scary and powerful, just like Darth Vader. Only this villain's name is Dave. (er, it's spelled Dev, but pronounced Dave. Scary!)

And of course, because no epic adventure is complete without a mentor figure, Brahmastra has it's own version of Obi-Wan Kenobi, who helps guide Shiva on his quest. Because who doesn't love another wise old mentor after Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Qui-Gon Jinn?

What is your Brahmastra part 1: Shiva review? Did you love it? Hate it? Are you liking Indian cinema as much as we are? Let us know on our Discord server which you can join for free here: http://www.saltynerddiscord.com

Salty Nerd Reviews: The Menu (2022) Feb 17, 2023

Show notes

Join The Salty Nerds as they discuss the HBO movie "The Menu" (2022). How much Christian allegory can you fit in one movie? We're about to find out!

The Menu is a 2022 American comedy horror film directed by Mark Mylod, written by Seth Reiss and Will Tracy, based on an original story created by Tracy, produced by Adam McKay, Betsy Koch and Will Ferrell (yes, that Will Farrell), and starring Ralph Fiennes as a celebrity chef with Hong Chau playing his assistant and Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult, Janet McTeer, Reed Birney, Judith Light, and John Leguizamo playing diners who attend his exclusive restaurant. But it's not just a pretentious dining experience that's offered at this opulent eatery. Things take a surprise twist when the Chef reveals what is really on the menu for every single one in attendance for his "Last Supper".

Also, no, this movie isn't about cannibalism. Chill.

What is your The Menu (2022) movie review? Did you love it? Hate it? Do you think a breadless bread plate looks delicious? Let us know on our Discord server here: http://www.saltynerddiscord.com
