    Show notes

On this week's episode of The Rural Woman Podcast™, you'll meet Kate Kavanaugh.

Kate Kavanaugh is an entrepreneur, farmer, butcher, nutrition therapist, and host of the Mind, Body, and Soil Podcast. She saw firsthand the power of meat to heal her own body, and in seeking out farmers and ranchers raising meat, she found the power of meat to heal land, too.

In 2013, she opened Western Daughters Butcher Shop in Denver, Colorado, with her now-husband, Josh Curtiss, where they source grass-fed and pasture-raised whole animals from local regenerative farmers and ranchers. Kate is now the host of the Mind, Body, and Soil podcast, where she is devoted to digging in deep with guests to find the heart of connection and what it means to lay the groundwork for generations to come. She is a citizen soil nerd, avid reader, and ground meat's biggest fangirl. When she’s not running her businesses, you can find Kate raising pork, poultry, and grass-fed goats and cows on her 65-acre farm.

    Show notes

On this week's episode of The Rural Woman Podcast™, you'll meet Jenna Brown.

Jenna earned her B.S. in Biology and Soil Science from the University of Wyoming. After college, she saw herself working in the energy industry and living the big city life with all of her friends enjoying fancy bars and Colorado Avalanche hockey games. However, that all changed in 2020 when she lost her energy industry job and moved to a small town in the middle of nowhere Montana with her two fur babies to pursue a career in agriculture. Not growing up in agriculture, Jenna has completely immersed herself in the world of crop science and soil health.

Micro Cultivation, Processing & Cannabis Education with Serena Donovan Feb 17, 2023
    Show notes

*The content shared in this episode includes cannabis education and is intended for an adult audience.

On this week's episode of The Rural Woman Podcast™, you'll meet Serena Donovan.

Serena Donovan is a proud wife, mother, and grandmother living and working on their family grain farm near Mossleigh, Alberta. Although Serena grew up rurally, she did not have a direct connection with Agriculture until later in life. Looking for ways to diversify their operation, in 2019, Serena began building her indoor cannabis facility, bringing farming indoors all year long. In February 2020, Because You Cann was the 2nd micro cultivation license issued in Alberta by Health Canada and the 25th in the nation.

In 2022, Serena expanded her cannabis businesses to include the MaryJane Manor, the 1st Cannabis Boutique Hotel in Canada. Having experienced judgment surrounding the stigma of cannabis and being a medical cannabis patient, she built out the hotel with the purpose of reducing the occurrence of negative stigma others may face in their cannabis consumption.

Cannabis may be a very untraditional crop to many, but Serena is a proud farmer!

Investing in Your Ideas with Megan Callahan Jan 13, 2023
    Show notes

On this week's episode of The Rural Woman Podcast™, you'll meet Megan Callahan.

She is the Jill of all trades at the Lazy D C Bar Ranch. Megan has lots of irons in the fire. From Raw milk to riding lessons, mule breeding, donkey rescue, Mom & Foster Parent, hay sales, a pumpkin patch and Glamping tents in the near future! The many avenues for revenue prepare her for if certain markets take a hit.

Megan lives in one of the most incredible towns between Missoula and Kalispell on the Flathead reservation. St. Ignatius has a wonderful community, along with breathtaking views. An agriculture prominent area helps for a relaxing vacation spot and a good place to raise a family.

Mules, donkeys, and horses are her first passion, along with educating on the differences between them and their varying needs.

During pumpkin patch season, you can usually find Megan at the pony rides or wandering around, connecting with the community. Attendance has doubled every year, and they are just wrapping up their 4th year.

From time in the tractor to teaching, she loves it all! (Ok, maybe not changing hand-line irrigation.)
