Blooms and Balance: Navigating Business, Family, and Self-Care in Flower Farming with Rechelle Day Sep 29, 2023
    Show notes

On this week's episode of The Rural Woman Podcast™, you'll meet Rechelle Day.

Farming has always been near and dear to Rechelle, as her mother and father’s families have been farming for decades, and the spectrum has been broad (strawberries, potatoes, watermelons, alfalfa, corn, wheat, peaches, cherries, apples, pears, and the list goes on).

While experimenting with her own yard, Rechelle would reminisce about the memories she shared in the garden with her mother and Grandma, Kahler, and her interest in how different flowers grew. As each season passed, Rechelle’s little garden squeezed in between Christmas Trees and became larger and larger, she soon became interested in all the different plants, and her free time (although small) was filled with learning more about the various flowers she could grow. Each season she would try to grow something new, sharing her harvest with friends and family. When COVID-19 flipped their worlds upside down, Rechelle found the greatest peace in her garden, pulling weeds and cultivating beauty through flowers. It was at that moment she decided she needed to share this beauty and happiness with others, and thus Freckled Bloom Flower Farm was born!

Growing Together: Partnering for Success in Student Agriculture with Anna Bowen Sep 01, 2023
    Show notes

On this week's episode of The Rural Woman Podcast™, you'll meet Anna Bowen.

Anna Bowen is a dairy farmer, farm business consultant, and freelance writer living in West Wales (UK). She and her partner are in a contract farming agreement milking 300 spring-calving dairy cows managed on a grass-based system. Anna's off-farm work focuses on low-input dairy farms but also covers other dairy systems, beef, sheep, and soil science. She writes for the farming and rural press and on her own website.

In 2020 Anna was awarded a Nuffield Farming Scholarship to research how the dairy industry can rear calves in a more ethical way - looking at the best ways to use sexed semen and breed dairy beef and the feasibility of keeping cows and calves together. Her scholarship also looked at lessons the dairy industry can learn from horseracing about social licence.

Cultivating Connections: The Power of School Gardens and Community Engagement with Michelle Johnsrude Aug 18, 2023
    Show notes

On this week's episode of The Rural Woman Podcast™, you'll meet Michelle Johnsrude.

Michelle is a senior high science teacher from Chilliwack, BC. She is the proud granddaughter of dairy farmers in Abbotsford, BC. Michelle started teaching in 2006 and has always been passionate about gardening. She started an after-school garden club with a colleague, in collaboration with the University of the Fraser Valley, that eventually grew to become a course in the school timetable. She wanted to see a school garden established and kept working to find money and space for it.

Currently, the school garden has raised beds, a compost center, a native plant garden, as well as berry crops and fruit trees. She is super excited to be able to teach in the new greenhouse that was built in the summer of 2022. Collaboration is the key to this program; connections with UFV and educators at other Chilliwack schools, as well as Agriculture in the classroom and enthusiastic local farmers, have made all the difference in helping kids know how complex agriculture is and where their food comes from.
