The Private Equity Digital Transformation Show

This talk show is about the next big thing in value creation. It is for fund managers and corporate leadership investigating smart digital transformation for their companies, and for service providers, subject matter experts and vendors wanting to broaden their digital skills. Although the show’s focused on value creation in the context of private equity, it’s sector agnostic and can get pretty geeky, digging into IoT, data science (analytics & ML) and other high technology. At a high level, the show is about how to frame the digital investment thesis and how to execute it. Your host, Bruce Sinclair, is an ex-PE operating partner who has written the best-selling books, The Private Equity Digital Operating Partner and IoT Inc, and has certified thousands of professionals with his ICIP program and LinkedIn Learning courses. Season 1 of this show was called, The IoT Inc Business Show.

Standing Up an IoT Pilot in an OT World Apr 03, 2020
    Show notes

Ripping out an existing SCADA system and replacing it with an IoT deployment isn't going to happen any time soon. Whether it's an oil pipeline or a water processing plant, the job of the OT guys is to keep things flowin'. Although the writing is on the wall, it's going to take a lot more than the promise of information nirvana to change existing infrastructure. In this episode of the IoT Business Show, I speak with System Integrator Joel Hutton about his experience in applying the thin edge of the wedge to get an IoT pilot going with his clients.

IoT Design – Nerding out with a Good View Mar 27, 2020
    Show notes

It's one thing to be in a kickstarter–fueled startup developing your IoT product and quite another to be doing it within a structured corporate environment. Things get in the way. Priorities, personalities, politics, and executive management. The same work needs to be done but other considerations need to be taken into account. In this episode of the IoT Business Show, I speak with Jake Fields about his experience in working with IoT teams within the enterprise environment and the development steps to take to successfully make it through to the other side..

More like an Experience than a Piece of Hardware Mar 20, 2020
    Show notes

Because of the technology and data available, the biggest and most interesting challenge in designing an IoT product is to make it feel more like a service or experience than a piece of hardware. Only after you understand the customer and what the opportunities really are can product design begin. In this episode of the IoT Business show, I speak with Gordon Hui to get an uber designer's perspective on how to find that ideal product experience and the business that must be developed to support it.

    Top-down Design with Bottom-up IoT Tech Mar 13, 2020
    Show notes

When starting down the path toward your IoT product, it's tempting to jump into the tech and get started with your PoC… but don't fall into that trap. Of course, there are benefits to getting the minimally viable product out the door but these benefits don't go away if you back up first and start with a business strategy and defined user experience – in fact, they're accelerated when you have a clear path from the start. In this episode of the IoT Business show, I speak with Erik Ljung about the importance of starting at the top when beginning your product design process.

Getting an IoT project off the ground isn't easy. It's not just about launching a new product based on new technology, it's the changes the organization must make to reach escape velocity. More Scalable Blockchain Alternatives to Transact IoT Business Feb 28, 2020
    Show notes

Okay, our blockchain discussion isn't quite over yet. Let me ask the question again, is blockchain ready to transact IoT business? The answer is still a resounding "no" but let me caveat it by saying, there are newer technologies that address blockchain's bottlenecks and deployment weaknesses. Introducing alternative DLTs – distributed ledger technologies. In this episode of the IoT business show, I speak with Ashish Mehta about the options available for those who want to incorporate blockchain-like functionality into IoT today.

Is Blockchain Ready to Transact IoT Business? Feb 21, 2020
    Show notes

Is blockchain ready to transact IoT business? That's the question I've been trying to answer during this mini-series. While the quest has been intellectually interesting and frustrating at the same time, the answer is a resounding "no." Although the tech is cool, blockchain is nowhere near ready to be used for business within the budgetable future. In this episode of the IoT business show, I speak with Rhian Lewis about the promise and challenges of transacting with blockchain, Ethereum, and cryptocurrencies in IoT.

The Trusted IoT Alliance – Standardizing Blockchain for IoT Feb 14, 2020
    Show notes

Want to incorporate blockchain into IoT? Well, that's a pretty tall order but you have two ways to go about it. Go it alone to build the world's best IoT blockchain protocol and hope it's adopted or join others that have similar goals to build the world's best IoT blockchain protocol in hopes that it's adopted. In this episode of the IoT Business Show, I speak with Zaki Manian about the technology and business advantages of blockchain in IoT and the approach the Trusted IoT Alliance is taking to make them a reality.

IoT Security – the Security Development Lifecycle Way Feb 07, 2020
    Show notes

We all know, whether from experience or just intuitively, that bolting security on an IoT product after much of the development has been completed is a total rookie mistake and a recipe for disaster. Yet this still happens. By crowdfunded startups who don't mention security in their videos, to internal teams in larger enterprises who also emphasize the bling in order to get their project greenlit from within. In this episode of the IoT Business Show, I speak with Chris Romeo about the Security Development Lifecycle, the polar opposite to the bolt-on, that's been successfully used in IT security for years.

Blockchain in IoT and the Advent of Truthful Data Jan 31, 2020
    Show notes

Blockchain. One of the few technologies more hyped than IoT. Put them together and it's a hypefest. But is it warranted? Honestly, I don't know but I can tell you, for me, the decision is not going to be based on if it's cool tech, it's going to be based on, if that cool tech contributes to making more money. In this episode of the IoT Business Show, I speak with Jessica Groopman about what blockchain is and how it fits into the Internet of Things.
