The Private Equity Digital Transformation Show

This talk show is about the next big thing in value creation. It is for fund managers and corporate leadership investigating smart digital transformation for their companies, and for service providers, subject matter experts and vendors wanting to broaden their digital skills. Although the show’s focused on value creation in the context of private equity, it’s sector agnostic and can get pretty geeky, digging into IoT, data science (analytics & ML) and other high technology. At a high level, the show is about how to frame the digital investment thesis and how to execute it. Your host, Bruce Sinclair, is an ex-PE operating partner who has written the best-selling books, The Private Equity Digital Operating Partner and IoT Inc, and has certified thousands of professionals with his ICIP program and LinkedIn Learning courses. Season 1 of this show was called, The IoT Inc Business Show.

Increasing Your Company's Data IQ with its Own Datamart Jun 07, 2019
    Show notes

Using external data in addition to your internal data is strategic. Besides public microservices, business systems, and IoT products, an emerging source of external data is the datamart, otherwise known as the data marketplace or data exchange – places where you can buy and sell data on the open market. But should you sell your data and are there any other options to do so? In this episode of the IoT Business Show, I speak with Tim Panagos about setting up your own datamart and the inherent value in doing so - even if you don't plan on selling anything at all.

Applying the Opensource Ethos to Data May 31, 2019
    Show notes

Opensource software is mainstream. But opensource data? Yeah, and it can be found in a datamart near you. The thinking is, if you make your data freely available for all to use; all will improve it. It will be made more consumable, you will get feedback on how to use it and perhaps counterintuitively, you will learn how to value it. In this episode of the IoT Inc Business Show, I speak with Nicolas Terpolilli about applying the opensource ethos to data within the data exchange.

Wrangling Data from the Data Marketplace May 24, 2019
    Show notes

One of data science's dirty little secrets is the time spent data wrangling, that is accessing the data and then transforming it into a form compatible with your data tools and chosen analytical and learning models. Most agree this can take a full 75-80% of data science time. In this episode of the IoT Inc Business Show, I speak with Adam Mayer about data access and form when shopping at your local datamart.

Dirty Data – Preventing the Pollution of Your IoT Data Lake May 17, 2019
    Show notes

We've all heard it before: garbage in – garbage out. This is especially problematic with IoT data where dirty data, data that is well-formed but wrong, can cause a butterfly effect chain reaction, polluting the data lake, resulting in bad decisions and bad business. In this episode of the IoT Business Show, I speak with James Branigan about what bad data is, how to identify it, stop it and then deal with the aftermath.

Opening Soon Commercial Data Marketplaces for IoT May 10, 2019
    Show notes

They say data is the new oil. Well if that's the case, then like oil, crude data must be refined and packaged to make it useful and consumable. If you believe, like I believe, that all incremental value from an Internet product comes from transforming its data into useful information, then external sources of data, when combined with internal data, can become very valuable, indeed. In this episode of the IoT Business Show, I speak with David Knight about third-party data markets and syndicates.

Business lessons for the IoT Professional May 03, 2019
    Show notes

Business is all about creating value and then monetizing it, and it's no different in IoT. For companies to succeed in IoT, both value creation and value monetization must be mastered. In this episode of the IoT Business Show, I share with you three lessons from the ICIP Business course. The first, an overview of the value creation framework, that walks through the four types of value creation in IoT. The next lesson is on one of the five classes of business models used in IoT – the Service business model. And the third lesson is an overview of risk management – the business counterpart to cybersecurity. This episode is a lot shorter than last week's but packs a big punch.

On Using Agile Development for IoT May 01, 2019
    Show notes

Every IoT product, system or environment I've worked on has pivoted. And I don't mean slight pivots, I'm talking 180 degrees or more. Why? Because the Internet of Things is new. New to the product builder and new to their customers. Because of this newness and the planning fallacy, it's important to take a highly iterative approach to development. In this episode of the IoT Business Show, I speak with Jeff McGehee about agile development and how to use it most effectively when building a new IoT product.

    IoT-Retail Tech Converging Offline-Online Shopping Apr 26, 2019
    Show notes

It takes a lot, and I mean a lot, to get me to download yet another app on my phone, especially one that's going to try to sell me something… but, I'm open to Retail-IoT tech. I'm not much of a physical shopper, probably because I find the whole shopping experience so dreary, but this so-called offline-online convergence within retail has piqued my interest. In this episode of the IoT Business Show, I speak with Oleg Puzanov about proximity marketing and where it's headed with IoT.

Open Source IoT Platforms – Ready for Primetime? Apr 19, 2019
    Show notes

If you've been listening to my show for a while you know I'm a lover of IoT platforms. It just doesn't make sense to create your own plumbing from scratch – especially since there are so many beauties to choose from that sport business models that are so agreeable early on. But what about open source platforms – are they ready yet for primetime? In this episode of the IoT Business Show, I speak with Hans Scharler about where open source platforms are today, and when it makes most sense to use them.

The Ever Evolving IoT Platform Mar 29, 2019
    Show notes

It's a heck of a lot easier than it used to be but most IoT projects still involve custom system integration – the question now is how much. Although the definition of an IoT platform, or AEP, is not always clear, what is clear is that using a platform saves a lot of time and a lot of system integration work. There may be legitimate reasons to develop your own platform in house but by definition, this means you become a software company – big time. In this episode of the IoT Business show, I speak with Bryan Kester to get his take on what an IoT platform is, the technologies involved and a candid view on the strengths and weaknesses of IoT platforms today.
