The Plant Path: Clinical Herbalism, Medical Astrology & Spagyric Alchemy

The Plant Path is the official podcast from Sajah Popham and The School of Evolutionary Herbalism. Our goal is to provide insights, skills and tools for the practice of true holistic herbalism grounded in tradition. We strive to share an equal balance of clinical strategies and spiritual perspectives on people, plants and the healing journey. The unique approach involves traditional Western herbalism, Ayurveda, spagyric alchemy, astrological medicine, and modern science. We don’t just focus on what herbs are “good for,” but rather how you can work with them to heal, consciously evolve and be of service to your family, community or clinic.

The Importance of Nervine Materia Medica Aug 17, 2017
    Show notes

I always tell my students that for the client that is stressed and exhausted to give them herbs for the nervous system before even thinking about touching the adaptogens which are typically administered for these common complaints. Too many herbalists use adaptogens out of their clinical indications and traditional context of usage and overlook the potency and healing quality of the nervine materia medica.

In this lecture I gave at the 2016 Breitenbush Herb Conference, I offer some specific delineations of our materia medica for the nervous system so you can know how to administer them holistically.

What IS Herbal Energetics? Aug 17, 2017
    Show notes

It's common for people to conjure up images of plant spirits or think that energetics is some far out there esoteric "woo-woo" concept in herbalism.

This could not be farther from the truth.

In fact, before modern science came into fruition and chemical theory of medicinal plants came into being, energetic models permeated literally every culture and tradition of plant medicine across the world.

And what's interesting about these different traditions, is that they essentially discovered the same principles of how plants heal. The traditions may have been different, but their system of energetics were for the most part exactly the same.

Energetics encompasses not a mechanistic model of the human body and how plants heal, but rather informs us of an ecological perspective on human health- on how we are a microcosm of the macrocosm, a mere reflection of nature. This is a highly refined system of analysis, evaluation, therapeutics, formulation, and administration of herbal medicines.

And we know it works because it was practiced this way for thousands of years before we knew anything about sesquiterpene lactones, iridoid glycosides, and alkaloids!!

Clinical Patterns vs. Uses Aug 17, 2017
    Show notes

We've all seen it before. You get super excited about a new herb and want to learn more about it. So you pull your herb books off the shelf and open it to the monograph on that plant.

Unfortunately what you end up with is oftentimes only a few paragraphs, many of which begin with "This herb is good for…." followed by a list of symptoms.

While this type of information can be useful, for me, it's just not deep enough. It doesn't ultimately lead to me having a comprehensive understanding of how that plant functions physiologically and alters the state of the tissues, organs and systems within the body.

What an herb is "good for" doesn't concern me as much as who that herb isand how it functions physiologically.

This has led to me to describe medicinal plants based on their clinical patterns, meaning what are the constellations of symptoms, physiological imbalances, and underlying tissue state/constitutional energetics that makes that plant beneficial for certain problems.

So rather than saying "Willow is good for headaches." I want to know why Willow is good for headaches. What is it doing on a physiological and energetic level in the body that makes it beneficial for headaches? What type of headache is it good for? Because many people take Willow for a headache and it doesn't do anything, but others do and it helps immensely.

In essence, we want to get more specific with our understanding on how to apply medicinal plants within a therapeutic context, and in my opinion the best way to do that is to understand the underlying patterns within the plants and how they match certain patterns within a person. This is often achieved through the synergy of looking at the actions, affinities and energetics of the herb then applying that synergy of information towards how it is applied medicinally.

Leaky Gut Syndrome Herbal Actions and Formulation Jul 04, 2017
    Show notes

Leaky gut syndrome is a byproduct of our modern world- from antibiotic trauma to inorganic, processed and genetically modified foods- the human gastrointestinal tract has undergone some serious changes, and not necessarily for the better. I would say approximately 98% of all of my clients have some sort of digestive symptom, most have taken antibiotics, and were raised on the S.A.D. (Standard American Diet).

From the standpoint of holistic traditions of medicine, the digestive system is considered the root of the vital force, determining the health of the entire organism. In short, if something is "off" in the gut, things will be "off" elsewhere in the body (and the mind). From chronic pain, headaches, and skin conditions, to irritability, depression and brain fog, leaky gut syndrome can be at the root of many chronic and common complaints of the modern client.

This discussion outlines some critical herbal actions to consider when treating leaky gut syndrome with herbs as well as a few formulation ideas to start working with.

Herbs Therapeutics for Pain Jul 04, 2017
    Show notes

Pain is one of the #1 reasons people go to see the doctor these days. But aside but over the counter anti-inflammatory drugs, benzodiazepine based muscle relaxants, or opiate based pain meds, modern pharmaceutical and allopathic medicine has very little to offer for the treatment of pain.

And unfortunately people think plants are just kind of "cute" when it comes to treating pain.

But the truth is that we can do so much more with our plants to treat the pain response that most pills can. From anti-spasmodics and nervine hypnotics, to inflammation modulating remedies and anodynes, plants are gifted in the ways they work on broad spectrum physiological processes that are responsible for pain.

Alchemy and Spagyrics in Herbalism (Part 2) Jul 04, 2017
    Show notes

In part II of this two part lecture, you will learn some of the practical applications of alchemical philosophy in the preparation of herbal medicines, a practice referred to as "spagyrics."

You will learn how the 3 philosophical principles of Sulfur, Mercury and Salt are represented in the plant kingdom, how to extract, purify and recombine them to produce different types of spagyric medicines. These forms of herbal medicines act not only on the physical body through their concentration of the constituents of the plants, but also upon the energetic and spiritual bodies in the way they concentrate the celestial influences of the planets.

This lecture is from the 2015 Northwest Herbal Symposium.

Medical Astrology for the Practitioner of Botanical Medicine (Part 2) Jul 04, 2017
    Show notes

Throughout the Renaissance Era of medicine, it was standard practice for not only herbalists, but university trained physicians to utilize medicine astrology in their diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. As science desacralized ancient traditions, the usage of astrology for medical purposes has diminished into obscurity.

The link between plants and planets is both ancient and universal, with cultures all across the world recognizing this sacred connection between Heaven and Earth. Through integrating the pattern of the cosmos into our model of clinical herbalism, our capacities as plant healers is magnified significantly in our ability to assess hard to treat conditions, see into the underlying root causes of disease, and create highly unique customized formulas and protocols that are truly healing and transformative.

The 5 Keys for Using Herbs Holistically Jul 04, 2017
    Show notes

In the modern world of herbalism, strongly influenced by information from Google and the phytopharmaceutical and supplement industries, there is an increasing lack of traditional knowledge in the common mindset and usage of plant medicines. This had led to an allopathic approach to herbalism and "holistic amnesia," where we treat plants like drugs and not sentient beings.

Ultimately, plants cannot be used like drugs and if they are approached and such they will not work!

This lecture from the 2017 International Herb Symposium outlines 5 keys for how to understand and use herbs in a truly holistic fashion. This isn't focused on what herbs are "good for," but rather who they are as intelligent forces of nature. By learning these 5 keys, everything about a plant is understood within a holistic context so you learn each remedy with more depth and precision.

Spagyric Pharmacy for the Practitioner of Herbal Medicine Jul 04, 2017
    Show notes

Many modern practitioners of herbal medicine have a calling to heal not on the body with plants, but also the more subtle levels of the mind, emotions and spirit. While many reach for flower essences to work on this vibrational level of the human, this form of preparation is lacking in the physiological attributes of the plants through their chemistry.

Spagyrics is a form of herbal pharmacy with its roots in the alchemical tradition of the west that provides a truly holistic form of herbal extract- one that concentrates the physiological, energetic and spiritual properties of the plants. Through the synergy of alchemy and clinical herbalism, we have the ability to bring about a transformational level of healing for our clients.

This lecture from the 2017 International Herbal Symposium outlines some of the key principles of alchemy and how to incorporate specific spagyric methods in your home medicine making practices- specifically how to work with the mineral salts of plants.
