    273 - Winston Groom

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the movie Forrest Gump.

It was July 5, 1994 that Forrest Gump debuted in theaters nationwide. Directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Tom Hanks, the movie was based on the 1986 novel Forrest Gump by Winston Groom. To this day Forrest is an iconic figure of our popular culture and one of the most beloved characters of all time.

I invite you into the home of Winston Groom who was kind enough to have me on a very hot April day in Coastal Alabama. Forrest and Winston have a lot in common. Both of them are natural storytellers. Neither has much pretension. Both can say without a doubt "at least I didn't lead no humdrum life."

    272- Jacquie Wansley of Coca-Cola

Watching the series finale of the television show "Mad Men" really got me thinking about the history, traditions, marketing, advertising and image of Coca-Cola, undoubtedly the world's most popular branded beverage. Back in 2015 I had the opportunity along with Corina, to interview Jacquie Wansley who was then the Group Marketing Manager for the World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta, Georgia. She is now the Public Affairs and Communications Manager of Global Licensing and Retail at The Coca-Cola Company.

We not only got Jacquie Wansley's personal Coca-Cola story, but the opportunity to understand some of the brilliance in marketing, branding and production in a beverage the entire world identifies with. Wansley is intriguing, warm and relatable. You can meet her right here on The Paul Leslie Hour.

    271 - Monte Tolar

Monte Tolar was one of the most fun loving people you could ever meet. In addition to being a longtime member of the Atlanta Parrot Head Club, he was the founder of the Houston Parrot Head Club. A friend to many, his outlook was downright infectious. He was the Creative Consultant for this "The Magic of the Music: The Birth of a Parrot Head Nation" series of interviews that broadcast in 2009. The radio series coincided with the 20th anniversary of the Atlanta Parrot Head Club, the first Parrot Head Club in existence. Monte Tolar sadly passed away in 2010 and is greatly missed by all those who knew him. I am very grateful to have the opportunity to present this interview we did all those years back.

    270 - Wayne Myers

Wayne Myers seems like the kind of guy you would bump into at the beach. These days, that's probably something that does happen... A fan of many artists and bands, Myers grew to love the songs and performances of singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett. Ending up in Atlanta, he became very active with the Atlanta Parrot Head Club. A congenial guy, he was undoubtedly many people's introduction to the club, the first of its kind.

This interview was recorded and broadcast in 2009. It was a very cold and snowy day. The Atlanta Parrot Head Club was turning 20 years old. In 2019 the club will celebrate 30 years in existence. Listen to the Wayne Myers interview only on The Paul Leslie Hour.

Joel Oates makes for an entertaining interview and is a natural storyteller. A longtime music fan, he discovered the words and music of Jimmy Buffett and was hooked. He also has many stories from his time as the roadie for the band A1A which was exploding during the beginning of the Parrot Head madness. Joel Oates holds the distinction of attending every single Meeting of the Minds, the annual Parrot Head convention, originally started in New Orleans and now held in Key West.

This interview with Ann Gotthelf is from a radio series called “The Magic of the Music, the Birth of a Parrot Head Nation.” In this series we explored the formation of the very first Parrot Head Club, the Atlanta Parrot Head Club. For the uninitiated, a Parrot Head is a Jimmy Buffett fan.

Ann Gotthelf or as many called her "Mother Parrot" sadly passed away in January 2019. She was by all accounts a lovely person. She was a true Buffett fan. Few could say they witnessed one of his pre-fame and fortune concerts in the Southeast, but Ann Gotthelf did and remained a devoted fan her entire life.
