Why You Need to Focus Less on Hiring and More on Systems | 5-Minute Friday Nov 04, 2022
    Show notes

Over the past couple of years, we have had a massive challenge hiring quality team members. This challenge cuts across different industries, not just in our profession.
We are stuck in this endless cycle of advertise, interview, hire, train, lose, over and over.
    What's the solution?
In our practice, we have decided to move on from this cycle and focus more on efficient systems that eliminate the need to hire another person.
These are remote monitoring systems, patient intake systems, electronic form submission programs, financial arrangements programs, etc.
This is a better approach to make us more efficient and lower the stress associated with hiring.
Tune in to hear how we are doing it and why you should consider doing it too!
    Key Takeaways

    - The challenge of finding good team members (00:37)

    - Focus more on systems (01:45)

The Future of 3D Printing Orthodontics with Braces On Demand CEO Colin Corey Nov 01, 2022
    Show notes

Today on the episode, we have the Co-founder and CEO of Braces On Demand, Colin Corey, a company that is creating a completely unique workflow that brings on-demand manufacturing to any orthodontic practice.
3D printing in-office and on-demand customized braces for our patients enables a more personalized experience and higher-quality care.
The benefits of printing these appliances ourselves in our offices are the huge cost savings we are all looking for, and even more importantly, you don't have to wait for your manufacturer.
Coming from the more traditional orthodontic manufacturing, it's hard to keep every SKU in stock, and things going on backorder really disrupt your practice.
The fact that you're now relying on yourself and you're no more than a couple hours away from having any bracket of any flavor, of any prescription, is a really cool thing.
It sounds almost too good to be true.
The ability for every orthodontist to be able to print the prescription, the style of bracket they want that's going to last, be able to debond relatively easily, and be the right color is a true game changer.
In this episode, Colin and I discuss these 3D printing solutions and what's in the pipeline for the future.
    Tune in.
    Key Takeaways

    - Colin's background and how he got to ortho (02:13)

    - What are braces on demand (07:48)

    - What are the benefits of 3D printers in Orthodontics (10:34)

    - Can 3D printing get down to the tolerances needed for brackets (11:16)

    - What kinds of appliances are people printing out currently? (17:58)

    - Passive ligating bracket in one piece (21:33)

    - The future of 3D printing ortho appliances (25:26)

    - The difference between braces on demand and other products (28:09)

    - Formlabs 3D printers (29:44)

Focus On Working Harder On Yourself Than On Your Job | 5-Minute Friday Oct 31, 2022
    Show notes

If you're working pretty hard, that's a good thing. But I want to give you some advice today. I want you to focus on working harder on yourself than on your job.
    Now, what does that mean?
Everybody wants to go to work and tell others what to do, not necessarily working on themselves.
The biggest changes you can make in your life come from working on yourself and not trying to correct others.
It's easy to point the finger at somebody and say they did something wrong.
But I want you to look back at yourself and say, as a leader, as a manager, as somebody who's guiding a team, what could you have done differently in terms of training, onboarding, hiring, leadership, management, that could have prevented that problem from happening?

    Key Takeaways
    - Focus on working harder on yourself (00:46)
    - The biggest changes come from working on yourself (01:03)
    - What could you have done differently (01:33)
    - Like begets like (02:05)

Please take 11 minutes to listen to this episode because it could just change your life.
And it bears repeating that the interview I did with Dr. Robert Trujillo who is an orthodontist/life coach, is worth listening to: https://open.spotify.com/episode/0zzqKWw5XqbqlOF2qsfxsP?si=c696c5e7a4f24f0d

How To Protect Your Practice from A Crippling Ransomware Attack w/ Gary Salman Oct 25, 2022
    Show notes

Practice data and sensitive patient records have never been so valuable. Lone threat actors, organized cybercriminal gangs and nation-states are on the prowl looking for this data because once they get hold of it, they know they can demand thousands of dollars in ransomware.
In addition to this financial risk, dental practices face reputational and compliance risks if they suffer a data breach.
Protecting your patient records and complying with relevant regulations such as HIPAA has never been more urgent.
The dental and orthodontic world is lagging behind other businesses in adopting a secure cybersecurity posture. We are still relying on things such as antivirus software which aren't very effective anymore.
In this episode, I am joined by Gary Salman, CEO and Co-founder of Black Talon Security, to share some insights into the current state of cybersecurity affairs in the dental world.
Over the last couple of years, Gary and his team have seen a rise in ransomware attacks affecting the dental community. The impact of these attacks is life-changing and something you don't want to ever deal with.
It can literally cost you your practice.
Tune in to this episode to learn more about cybersecurity and what you can do to assess your vulnerabilities and protect your practice from an attack.

    Key Takeaways
    - Gary Salman’s roots in the dental industry (02:00)

    - Cyber risk management in dental practices (04:55)

    - Third-party vulnerability assessment (06:58)

Are You Surrounded by Tiggers or Eeyores? | 5-Minute Friday Oct 21, 2022
    Show notes

In our lives, whether it's in our practices or in our personal lives, we encounter two types of people; Eeyores and Tiggers.

Tiggers are those people who are energetic, happy, and great to be around. They always get us motivated and feeling good.

Eeyores, on the other hand, are always gloomy, pessimistic and suck the energy out of the room.

We want to surround ourselves with the right people who will make us happy and bring out the best in us. Remember, you become the average of the people you spend time with.

We should seek more Tiggers in our lives and limit our time with Eeyores.

You can never surround yourself with enough good people in your professional and private life.

Tune in to this 5-Minute episode!

    Key Takeaways

    - Are you a Tigger or an Eeyore? (00:50)

Comparing Spark and Invisalign Clear Aligners w/ Drs. Bill Dischinger And Trevor Nichols Oct 18, 2022
    Show notes

If there’s a topic that you are not likely to find any consensus about in the orthodontic world is the choice of the clear aligner to use in your practice.
Perhaps the reason for this is because, as clinicians, we want to be the best at what we do and what we use, and in the process, we get very attached to one aligner over the other.
In this episode, I am joined by Dr. Bill Dischinger and Dr. Trevor Nichols to talk everything about clear aligners.
They are key opinion leaders for Spark, but if you know anything about these two gentlemen, you know that this won’t make a difference in their opinion about this topic.
But one point we all emphasize in this episode that should guide all orthodontists is that we are not in the teeth business but in the people business.
We must be ready to embrace whatever technology or product that will help deliver excellent clinical outcomes to our patients with fewer visits and lesser time.

Risk Tolerance and Betting on Yourself | 5-Minute Friday Oct 07, 2022
    Show notes

Many years ago, when I was starting my career, I was advised by an older orthodontist that I shouldn't wait as long as most people do before starting my own practice.

Today, I echo back that advice to younger orthodontists.

Don't wait till you think you are ready; take a risk and bet on yourself. I guarantee you that it'll work out just fine.

If you are a dentist, an orthodontist, or some other professional, the odds of failing are very minimal.

Even for older orthodontists, be very willing to risk your capital for the right opportunities in your professional career.

Tune in for more in this 5-minute episode.

    Key Takeaways

    - Risk tolerance (00:29)

    - Capital preservation for younger orthodontists (01:30)

    - Be very willing to risk for the right opportunities (03:06)

    - Bet and invest in yourself (05:40)
