The Real Reason Why Your Orthodontic Team Is Leaving Sep 06, 2024
    Show notes

If you've got the dream team, the one you've had for years and love to bits, that's amazing. It's a rarity these days, and you should do everything you can to keep them.
Based on the countless private conversations I've had, team issues are one of the biggest stressors for orthodontists.
I get a ton of messages about this. People are struggling with team dynamics, conflicts, and general frustrations. It's a common theme affecting many of us, and it's something we need to address.
There are more opportunities available for young people today, especially in the gig economy. This means that attracting and retaining top talent is challenging.
Second, how you're hiring matters. Many orthodontists don't have a well-defined hiring process. They're relying on their guts or outdated methods. This will lead to mismatches and ongoing team problems.
Listen for tips to improve your hiring process and retain the talent you need to thrive in your practice.
    Key Takeaways
    Intro (00:00)
The rise of the gig economy and its impact on hiring (00:39)
    Current generation's career preferences (01:34)
Importance of adapting hiring processes (03:37)
Introduction of EOS's "right person, right seat" concept (04:18)

What Every Orthodontist MUST Know About Private Equity Aug 30, 2024
    Show notes

In the last few 5-minute episodes, I have talked mostly about private equity in orthodontics, practice growth, and financial projections.
Undoubtedly, these are topics that elicit a lot of reactions. I want to clarify several key distinctions.
Orthodontics is a specialized field that differs significantly from general dentistry, and comparisons between Orthodontic Service Organizations (OSOs) and Dental Service Organizations (DSOs) are often misleading.
Orthodontics cannot be directly compared to general dentistry. As someone who transitioned from general dentistry to orthodontics, I understand the nuances of both fields and the different financial dynamics at play.
I will also address common misconceptions about private equity's motivations for buying orthodontic practices.
Tune in to learn how to make informed decisions about your practice's future.
    Key Takeaways
    Intro (00:00)
Differences between dentistry and orthodontics (00:48)
Private equity’s motivation in OSOs (02:37)
The importance of evaluating each deal individually (07:35)
    Evaluating OSO deals (11:40)
    Private equity isn’t a Ponzi scheme (14:06)

2x Your Orthodontic Practice Without Sacrificing Your Personal Life, Here's How Aug 27, 2024
    Show notes

Building a successful orthodontic practice while maintaining a healthy work-life balance is a challenge that many orthodontists face.
I recently did an episode where I talked about building a 3 million plus practice. We also had some conversations about it in the OrthoPreneurs Facebook group.
I had the pleasure of sitting down with my friend and colleague, Dr. Brian Rochford, to discuss building a successful orthodontic practice.
Dr. Rochford and I share a similar philosophy when it comes to balancing practice growth and personal fulfillment.
Dr. Rochford joined his childhood orthodontist's practice and transformed it into a modern, efficient operation. He integrated digital technologies and adopted innovative management strategies that doubled his practice's size.
One of the takeaways from our conversation was the idea that a profitable orthodontic practice doesn't have to come at the expense of your personal life.
In fact, it's quite the opposite. Dr. Rochford created a "lifestyle practice" that allows for both practice growth and personal fulfillment. He discusses his transition to a fully digital practice, highlighting how technology has streamlined operations and improved patient care.
By implementing efficient systems, delegating effectively, and focusing on patient care, you can create a practice that allows you to enjoy a fulfilling work-life balance.
Listen to the episode now and learn more about building a fulfilling practice today.
    Key Takeaways

Why I Spend 3 Hours a Week Helping My Peers Aug 23, 2024
    Show notes

As an orthodontist, I've always loved helping my patients achieve their dream smile, but what really gets me going is helping my peers with the different challenges we face as a profession.
While most of my training focused on the technical aspects of orthodontics, I quickly realized that running a successful practice also requires a strong understanding of the business side of things.
This is why I've dedicated a significant portion of my career to mentoring other orthodontists and offering to help them navigate the complexities of the industry.
I spend up to three hours each week on phone and Zoom calls with my peers.
These conversations fill my bucket despite the occasional criticism and negativity I might get from some quarters.
The criticism shows I'm making an impact and pushing boundaries.
Listen in to hear why I’m so passionate about helping my peers and how you can get hold of me.

    Key Takeaways
    Intro (00:00)
    Handling criticism with resilience (00:40)

Poker Will Teach You More About Running an Ortho Practice Than Any Course w/ Ty Ramsey Aug 20, 2024
    Show notes

Can poker strategies make you a better orthodontist?
Imagine sitting across from a poker pro. You think you’re just playing cards, but they’re watching your every move, reading your every tell. What if you could bring that same level of insight into your orthodontic practice?
In this episode, I sit down with Ty Ramsey, a 2nd time-returning champion of the podcast. He is a seasoned dental industry expert and an accomplished amateur poker player.
Ty shares how the skills that have won him poker tournaments can also help you win in practice management. From understanding the importance of patience and discipline to mastering the art of reading people, Ty’s insights could be the ace up your sleeve.
So, how does all this translate to orthodontics?
It’s all about understanding the human element. In the same way, a poker player studies their opponents’ tells, an orthodontist must learn to read their patients’ concerns, anxieties, and expectations.

Listen now and discover the strategies that could take your practice to the next level.

What if I told you that adding an extra million dollars to your practice could be as simple as securing just one extra patient per day?
It might sound too good to be true, but it's entirely possible—and it doesn’t even require increasing your overhead.
In this episode, I break down exactly how orthodontists can achieve this kind of growth.
You just need to identify and fix certain inefficiencies that are costing your practice this additional revenue.
And the best part is that by using modern tools like automation and AI, you can make these changes with minimal effort.

Why a Digital Practice is Key to Thriving in Modern Orthodontics w/ Dr. Bryan Lockhart Aug 13, 2024
    Show notes

One of the most common problems orthodontists face is achieving a fulfilling work-life balance while maintaining a thriving practice.
The demands of running a successful orthodontic office can lead to long hours and stress that can take a toll on both personal and professional life.
In this episode, I have a 3-time returning champion, Dr. Bryan Lockhart.
Bryan co-practices with his wife in Charlotte, North Carolina. He has a rich background in digital orthodontics and has even participated in popular game shows like Family Feud.
Bryan is quick to point out that there is no single "best" way to practice as long as you find an approach that aligns with your personal goals and values.
He takes us through the different technologies he uses to improve efficiency, reduce clinical hours, and enhance patient outcomes.
The flexibility that comes with a digital practice allows him to adapt his schedule to fit his lifestyle. He says he can manage his time more effectively, which allows him to create a fulfilling work-life balance.
We also talk about several other issues in our profession in this fun interview. Listen in!

    Why Above 14% Returns Aren’t Crazy Aug 09, 2024
    Show notes

Why are you settling for mediocre investment returns?
As evidenced by some of the responses I received from some of you in the Orthoprenuers group, aiming for 5-7% yearly returns is selling yourself way too short.
Settling for single-digit returns might be holding you back from significant wealth creation. You have to look beyond the stock market for more opportunities that provide much better returns if you truly want to build wealth.
For some doctors, joining an OSO opens up lucrative opportunities that they never knew existed. It did in my case and for many others.
The bottom line is that you have to view money as the wealthy do - as a tool to make more money.
    Listen in to learn more!
    Key Takeaways
    Intro (00:00)
Aim for investment opportunities with higher returns (00:48)
How OSOs provide access to investment opportunities (03:39)
Private equity funds target to outperform the market (05:52)
View money as the wealthy do (06:55)
