Hitler's Monsters: A Supernatural History of the Third Reich Jun 10, 2024
    Show notes

“A dense and scholarly book about . . . the relationship between the Nazi party and the occult . . . reveals stranger-than-fiction truths on every page.”—Daily Telegraph
The Nazi fascination with the occult is legendary, yet today it is often dismissed as Himmler’s personal obsession or wildly overstated for its novelty. Preposterous though it was, however, supernatural thinking was inextricable from the Nazi project. The regime enlisted astrology and the paranormal, paganism, Indo-Aryan mythology, witchcraft, miracle weapons, and the lost kingdom of Atlantis in reimagining German politics and society and recasting German science and religion.
In this eye-opening history, Eric Kurlander reveals how the Third Reich’s relationship to the supernatural was far from straightforward. Even as popular occultism and superstition were intermittently rooted out, suppressed, and outlawed, the Nazis drew upon a wide variety of occult practices and esoteric sciences to gain power, shape propaganda and policy, and pursue their dreams of racial utopia and empire.
“[Kurlander] shows how swiftly irrational ideas can take hold, even in an age before social media.”—The Washington Post
“Deeply researched, convincingly authenticated, this extraordinary study of the magical and supernatural at the highest levels of Nazi Germany will astonish.”—The Spectator
“A trustworthy [book] on an extraordinary subject.”—The Times
“A fascinating look at a little-understood aspect of fascism.”—Kirkus Reviews
“Kurlander provides a careful, clear-headed, and exhaustive examination of a subject so lurid that it has probably scared away some of the serious research it merits.”—National Review

Scott Carney : The Red Market: On the Trail of the World's Organ Brokers, Bone Thieves, Blood Farmers, and Child Traffickers
“An unforgettable nonfiction thriller, expertly reported….A tremendously revealing and twisted ride, where life and death are now mere cold cash commodities.”
—Michael Largo, author of Final Exits
Award-winning investigative journalist and contributing Wired editor Scott Carney leads readers on a breathtaking journey through the macabre underworld of the global body bazaar, where organs, bones, and even live people are bought and sold on The Red Market. As gripping as CSI and as eye-opening as Mary Roach’s Stiff, Carney’s The Red Market sheds a blazing new light on the disturbing, billion-dollar business of trading in human body parts, bodies, and child trafficking, raising issues and exposing corruptions almost too bizarre and shocking to imagine.

The Cleveland Elementary School shooting is a school shooting that took place on January 29, 1979, at a public elementary school in San Diego, California, United States. The principal and a custodian were killed; eight children and police officer Robert Robb were injured. A 16-year-old girl, Brenda Spencer, who lived in a house across the street from the school, was convicted of the shootings. Charged as an adult, she pleaded guilty to two counts of murder and assault with a deadly weapon, and was sentenced to life in prison with a chance of parole after 25 years.
A reporter reached Spencer by phone while she was still in the house after the shooting, and asked her why she committed the crime. She reportedly answered: "I don't like Mondays. This livens up the day,"
    N. Leigh Hunt is the first person to tell Brenda’s story, with Brenda’s help.

    Nathan Lewinski - I don't like Mondays
    January 1
Horrifying events like the April 1999 killing of twelve students and a teacher at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, by two of their classmates might have left some believing deadly school shootings were a new ill bestowed upon us by a society only recently gone mad, yet that was not the case. That today's death tolls are higher and the media coverage surrounding them more intense might serve to encourage belief that this sort of random murder by, and of, young people is a recent phenomenon, but the sad history of such attacks belies that belief. Deadly shooting sprees at schools perpetrated by troubled teens took place at least as much as a generation before Columbine.
One of the earliest mass school shootings occurred in 1975 in Ottawa, Canada, when on 27 October of that year, 18-year-old Robert Poulin went on a killing spree at St. Pius X High School, killing one student and wounding five others before turning the gun on himself. Poulin had earlier raped and stabbed a 17-year-old friend to death.
Of all the pre-Littleton school shootings, the one most remembered by people at the time was recalled primarily because of its impact on pop culture: it inspired the popular Boomtown Rats song "I Don't Like Mondays." Released in October 1979, this song captured the insanity of the moment by working the shooter's chilling utterance into its lyrics:
Of course fallible memory being what it is, people who now remember the shooting spree behind the song recall it in only the most haphazard of fashions. They recall that a shooting took place at a school, that lives were lost, that the shooter was female, and that by way of explanation for her actions she said "I don't like Mondays,"

Ivy Supersonic - Jeans and Justice Jun 08, 2024
Show notes Ivy Supersonic - Jeans and Justice

Ivy Supersonic is a New York City fashion designer, self-promoter, event planner, and animated character designer. She is the daughter of Jerome Silberstein, founder of Silberstein, Awad & Miklos. She also paints under her birth name.As her hat made headlines across the globe, Supersonic was diligently crafting the idea for which she thought she'd be remembered: an animated half-squirrel, half-rat character called Sqrat. If that name brings back memories of the lovable, acorn-obsessed rodent from the "Ice Age" franchise, you're not alone. One key difference: In the movies, it's spelled "Scrat," with a C.Supersonic knows all about that Scrat. She's spent more than 20 years trying to prove the makers of the "Ice Age" movies stole the idea for the character from her.Since the early 2000s, Supersonic, 54, has battled in court and held attention-grabbing protests to prove she came up with one of the most recognizable animated characters of the past two decades. In 2020, it appeared she'd finally won when the studio behind "Ice Age" dropped its challenge to the trademark for "Sqrat" with a Q — which meant she had the exclusive right to sell merchandise with the Sqrat branding. Now, Disney+ is set to release "Ice Age: Scrat Tales," a series starring the character — but Supersonic said she wasn't seeing a dime of the profits. She's heading back to court once again to fight for her dream. She tells Ed Opperman about her experiences, good and bad in fashion. From design theft and blacklisting to celebrity endorsements and setting trends.
