Ep 114: The Big Sick Aug 07, 2017

Show notes

In response to listener Jerry who thought Shahir's name was Kumail, we decided to review the sleeper hit of the summer "The Big Sick" a remake of the classic Sandra Bullock joint "While You Were Sleeping" (okay, I'm kidding, but seriously, go check out the IMDB synopsis). This might be a warm up to an episode we're planning on race and representation, but it's hard not to be charmed by the easy going delightfulness of writers Kumail Nanjiani and Emily Gordon's true life story, brought to life by one of Matt's favorite people Michael Showalter. If you think Matt and Shahir should drop this charade and finally tie the knot you can email us your RSVP to onlymoviepodcast@gmail.com, tweet us your suggestions for the best wedding registry at www.twitter.com/onlymoviepod. Finally, you can leave comments for our guestbook on iTunes (in the form of a podcast review!) Ep 113: Dunkirk Jul 31, 2017

Show notes

In June of 1940, over 300,000 British soldiers were evacuated against the odds from the beaches of Dunkirk. Now, 77 years later, you can listen to Shahir whine about his IMAX experience. What a time to be alive! We're joined by Reviewed podcast host and Short of the Week writer Ivan Kander for his second TOPAM appearance. We talk about IMAX, Christopher Nolan the auteur and whether a War film can be anti-war. Keep that email feedback coming at us at onlymoviepodcast@gmail.com or hit us up on Twitter (https://twitter.com/onlymoviepod). If you want to support the show, iTunes reviews are the best way to let us know you're there! Ep 112: War For The Planet Of The Apes Jul 24, 2017

Show notes

Three years since the dawn of the rise of the reboot of the planet of the apes, we are ready to go WAR... for the planet of the apes. But perhaps we came to bury Caesar, not to praise him. It's not the first time Shahir and Matt have been on the same side of the argument, but it might be the first time they're the lone voices against a 94% score on Rottentomatoes. Speaking of scores, we also dive deep on Christopher Nolan's recent comments about Netflix as a distribution platform (http://www.indiewire.com/2017/07/christopher-nolan-interview-dunkirk-netflix-1201857101/) Declare war on us via email at onlymoviepodcast@gmail.com, or fly a white flag on twitter at https://twitter.com/onlymoviepod. Ep 111: Okja Jul 17, 2017

Show notes

When it comes to super-pigs, the oeuvre of Bong Joon Ho and the eternal question of should you eat your pets, there's only one podcast with all the answers... ours! Granted, we're still the only podcast about movies, but that's besides the point. The point in question is whether you should check out the Netflix original, Okja, a film controversially boo'ed at Cannes because it was available online. Sidestepping that strange argument, we deep dive into the Spielberg-esque qualities of director Bong Joon Ho and whether animal cruelty is enough to turn you off pork chops for good. Grill us with your questions at onlymoviepodcast@gmail.com or roast us under some Twitter flames at https://twitter.com/onlymoviepod. This episode also features our responses to all of your recent emails and messages, so thanks everyone who took the time to write in. We appreciate y'all! If you're enjoying the show, please drop us a review on iTunes - it really helps support us and spread the word! Ep 110: Spiderman: Homecoming Jul 10, 2017

Show notes

It's time for the 3rd annual Spider-Man reboot, which means donning our red tights and web slinging our way back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I know you're probably hoping for another Daud/Krol grudge match about the MCU, but fate has intervened and spun us a special guest to help mediate our Spidey related debate. We're thrilled to have film critic and YouTuber Bob Chipman; AKA MovieBob (http://moviebob.blogspot.com/) swing by with a long history of both the corporate politics and narrative history of Spider-Man to help us find our footing as we climb the latest MCU entry. As always, you can fire some web fluid in our direction via email at onlymoviepodcast@gmail.com, or swing by our twitter page (www.twitter.com/onlymoviepod). Ep 109: Baby Driver Jul 02, 2017

Show notes

This week, we have a hum in the drum about Edgar Wrights "Baby Driver". Matt's super excited to see something new from his favorite working director, but will Shahir's minor criticisms send this episode flying off the highway with long sidetracks about what constitutes "fun"? Send your driving playlist to onlymoviepodcast@gmail.com, or drop a speedy reply on Twitter (www.twitter.com/onlymoviepod). Also stop by our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/onlymoviepod/) for the occasional bout of cinematic road rage. Ep 108: It Comes At Night Jun 26, 2017

Show notes

Wedged right in between the summer blockbuster season comes Trey Edward Shults sophomore film "It Comes At Night" from production powerhouse A24, which gave us TOPAM favorites "The Witch", "Moonlight", "American Honey", "The Lobster", "Green Room", "Enemy" and "Room". If you know any of those previous reviews, you know how heated Matt and Shahir can get about these mid-budget films. Can they have a civil conversation about the merits of Shults new film, or will this turn into all out war about whether the whereabouts of a certain key really matters? If you'd like to come at us (at night), email onlymoviepodcast@gmail.com or creep up on us on Twitter (www.twitter.com/onlymoviepod). Also, don't forget to leave us a review on iTunes! Ep 107: Mr. Mom Jun 19, 2017

Show notes

It's an TOPAM Fathers Day Special! What better way to celebrate all the superhero dad's in the world by revisiting the time Batman (Michael Keaton) was just a poor shlub in the 80's trying to raise his kids while his wife Terri Garr heads off to work everyday. We're also joined by Mr. Mom's fanclub leader and fantastic director Laura Murphy (https://twitter.com/bestlauraever) from "Adam Ruins Everything" , "Last Week Tonight" and "Guy Code/Girl Code"! Laura's gonna make it 220... 221... whatever it takes to convince us that this 80's throwback is the quintessential comedy of the ages. If you've fathered an opinion about Mr. Mom, you can share it with us at onlymoviepodcast@gmail.com, tell us your dad jokes on twitter (https://twitter.com//onlymoviepod) or ask us how to fix your remote control by leaving us a review on iTunes (https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-only-podcast-about-movies/id998473390?mt=2) See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
