Ep 174: Eighth Grade Aug 12, 2018

Show notes

We're kicking it old school with Bo Burnham's Eighth Grade, a teenage coming of age comedy that has us questioning teenagers, age and comedy. Let's get lit as we explore our changing bodies in this deftly directed throwback to the awkwardness and anxiety that comes with being on the cusp of becoming a grownup. It's been a while, but this conversation gives hints what teenage Shahir and Matt might have been like. Hit that subscribe button and share your thoughts via old-school email at onlymoviepodcast@gmail.com. Ep 173: Request Round Up #2 - Speed Racer & Inception Aug 05, 2018

Show notes

It’s the return of our podcast within a podcast! This week, the dream of fulfilling all our listener requests begin to collapse as Matt and Shahir face off against their toughest foe... Imagined realities! The Wachowskis and Christopher Nolan have something in common as we explore the hidden thematic similarities of both SpeedRacer and Inception. Hint: it involves philosopher Jean Baudrillard and idealized visions of the real world. We’re currently in a fifth layer dream state, but send us a subconscious kick at onlymoviepodcast@gmail.com or watch us outrun you faster than Racer X on Twitter at www.twitter.com/onlymoviepod See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 172: Mission Impossible - Fallout Jul 29, 2018

Show notes

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to eradicate any doubt about the box office mojo of Thomas Cruise Mapother IV. If seeing Tom risk life and limb isn't enough for your entertainment, you can now listen to two shlubs gasbag about the meaning of those stunts and whether this latest installment in the Mission Impossible franchise actually makes any sense. If you're not entertained, you can email us your complaints (or compliments) to onlymoviepodcast@gmail.com or send us a self-destructing message on Twitter at www.twitter.com/onlymoviepod. Ep 171: Sorry To Bother You Jul 22, 2018

Show notes

Giddy up because we're back in the saddle with returning guest Jess Tucker who flew in all the way from the city of Angels to help us figure out Boots Riley's directorial debut "Sorry to Bother You" Magical realism, science fiction and absurdist satire all blend together in this office comedy about the way in which corporations can dehumanize our souls in the pursuit of the almighty dollar. Does this wildly irreverent take on capitalism manage to pull together all its multi-faceted narrative strands into a cohesive vision and can we put on our best white voice to either critique or celebrate Riley's vision of corporate America? Bother us via email at onlymoviepodcast@gmail.com or try to sell us the latest Encyclopedia Brittanica via Twitter at www.twitter.com/onlymoviepod See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 170: Request Roundup #1 - Nightcrawler & Prisoners Jul 20, 2018

Show notes

The time has finally come to clear out our listener requests backlog! First up, The "Jake Gyllenhaal Thriller Double Feature" with Dan Gilroy's Nightcrawler (2014) and Denis Villeneuve's Prisoners (2013). If we can get past Jake's dreamy eyes, will we see the darkness he's hiding in both these incredibly tense thrillers that explore the limits of morality, and will we finally forgive him for Prince of Persia? We're not currently taking any more listener requests but if you'd like to complain about how we're not currently taking any more listener requests, you can email us at onlymoviepodcast@gmail.com or get all up in our business at www.twitter.com/onlymoviepod See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 169: Leave No Trace Jul 15, 2018

Show notes

If you're going to live alone in the woods, make sure you have a fully charged IPod so you can learn how to survive with Matt and Shahir! We're setting up camp with Debra Granik's follow up to Winter's Bone "Leave No Trace" featuring Ben Foster and New Zealander (!) Thomasin McKenzie. Can a film foster empathy or does the conflation of too many good people undermine an emotional response? Sit around the campfire and send us some smoke signals to onlymoviepodcast@gmail.com. Alternatively, you could probably get an actual bird to tweet at us at www.twitter.com/onlymoviepod if you trained it for long enough. Ep 168: Ant Man and The Wasp Jul 08, 2018

Show notes

Let's cut the small talk. We've got an Ant-Man, a Wasp and a conversation about Marvel, sequels, villain problems and maybe a little side chat about toxic twitter. We're on a one-way ride to the quantum realm where we're going to try not to be eaten by tardigrades and avoid getting stuck in time talking about the same issues that seem to plague Marvel movies. Does Peyton Reed's sequel to 2015's Ant-Man break the tiny mold he created two years ago or is he forever living in the shadow of Edgar Wright? Shrink yourself down to subatomic scale and travel through the internet to explain how we're wrong about everything at onlymoviepodcast@gmail.com, or surf the toxic wasteland of twitter to let us know how we ruined your childhood by tweeting us at www.twitter.com/onlymoviepod Finally, please keep those iTunes reviews coming as they really help us spread the word! We're going to be clearing out the request list soon, so stay tuned for a lot of special episodes coming soon! Ep 167: Won't You Be My Neighbor Jul 01, 2018

Show notes

Matt and Shahir are real-life neighbors, so sitting down to have an honest discussion about Mr. Rogers, the current political climate or whether we're both mistakes doesn't take a lot of effort. What does require effort is pondering what Mr. Rogers would have thought of public rhetoric today and whether we're really thinking about the kids. Bring your tissues because we're going to figure out exactly why Morgan Neville's new documentary "Won't You Be My Neighbor" is resonating so powerfully with audiences. Even though we live in the land of make believe you can still send us messages via email at onlymoviepodcast@gmail.com, or whisper softly in our ears via twitter (www.twitter.com/onlymoviepod) See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 166: Oceans 8 Jun 25, 2018

Show notes

To pull off this review, we're gonna need a Charlotte, a Carrie, a Samantha and a really good Miranda! It's time for the crossover event of the century as we're joined by the fantastic Speaking of Carrie hosts Melissa Stokoski and Elyse Brandau to discuss Gary Ross' Oceans 8. Does this lady focussed fourth installment break the glass ceiling or is it just pulling off the same heist we've seen before? If you're hiding some Cartier jewels in an undisclosed location, send the map to onlymovipepodcast@gmail.com. You can also sneak in under our laser sensors by tweeting inconspicuously to www.twitter.com/onlymoviepod See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 165: Hereditary Jun 18, 2018

Show notes

We're going down the TOPAM family history and bringing back MTV News Video Director Steven Roberts (www.twitter.com/stevenwoberts) to dissect the debut feature, Hereditary from writer/director Ari Aster. We discuss Greek mythology, the disconnect between audiences and critics and how a great horror movie can give you more than just a jump scare. If you feel like summoning us, you can write in your tributes to onlymoviepodcast@gmail.com or chant our names on Twitter (www.twitter.com/onlymoviepod). Don't forget to leave a review on iTunes if you're enjoying the show! See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
