Show notes

It’s about to get pretty crowded for your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man as Matt and Shahir crash land "Into The Spider-Verse!" More importantly, does this more inclusive Spider-Man honor Stan Lee and Steve Ditko’s vision for an awkward teenage kid who just wants to do the right thing? Ep 192: Roma Dec 16, 2018

Show notes

This might be the first entirely spoiler free review we've done, so jump right in even if you aren't willing to make the pilgrimage to your local theater (or login to your Netflix account!) Fusing subjective memory with all the technical craft of a major blockbuster, Alfonso Cuarón returns 5 years after defying Gravity to deliver the uniquely personal story of Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio), a nanny and housekeeper to a family living in the Roma neighborhood of Mexico City. Shahir and Matt discuss subjectivity, authenticity and whether this Oscar front-runner lives up to the hype (hint: it does!) Send us your favorite black and white portraits to onlymoviepodcast@gmail.com, or tell us stories about your personal family memories at www.twitter.com/onlymoviepod See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 191: The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs Dec 10, 2018

Show notes

We might be hanging out the passenger side of our best friends ride, but that don’t mean we don’t want no Scruggs! In fact, The Coen's latest anthology of short films might just be the kind of ballad we’re hollering for. Join us as we dissect each individual short and attempt to decipher the broader meaning of this delightful assemblage of stories from the old West. Send us your thoughts in clear delineated chapters to onlymoviepodcast@gmail.com or scowl at us like an ominous owl on twitter at www.twitter.com/onlymoviepod. Ep 190: Widows Dec 02, 2018

Show notes

We're gonna need a driver, a shooter, a critic and a fanboy to dissect Steve McQueen's "Widows", a film which reunites Matt and Shahir with the heist film discussion they started on Oceans 8. This multi-layered character study may also be one of the most exciting movies of the year, so get your driver, plot your route and plan to see it in theaters (twice according to Shahir!). This episode features the first official TOPAM wager, where Matt and Shahir have wildly different interpretations of a scene. If you've seen the movie and have an opinion, email us in at onlymoviepodcast@gmail.com or hit us up on Twitter www.twitter.com/onlymoviepod. Remember, there's a whole dollar riding on your responses! See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 189: Ralph Breaks The Internet Nov 25, 2018

Show notes

Drop in a quarter and hit start with Ralph and Vanellope six years after they wrecked everything! We're feeling good after Thanksgiving and try to break the internet with positive vibes even as we discuss toxic relationships and codependency in this surprisingly mature and nuanced sequel. You can use the internet to contact us at onlymoviepodcast@gmail.com or on Twitter at www.twitter.com/onlymoviepod. We'll even read the comments section! See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 188: Suspiria Nov 19, 2018

Show notes

So you think you can dance? Well so does Susie Bannion (Dakota Johnson) as she contorts her way into this wild reinterpretation of Dario Argento's seminal classic "Suspiria" from director Luca Guadagnino. Does this new vision of horror have us twisting in weird angles of joy or are our heads going to explode as we try to figure out what it all means? As always you can email us at onlymoviepodcast@gmail.com or hit us up at www.twitter.com/onlymoviepod to request our dance auditions (Matt looks amazing in spandex!) Ep 187: Experiencing Places Through Film Nov 11, 2018

Show notes

Recorded in a cafe in Bilbao, Spain, this week's episode probably should have been sponsored by Iberia Airlines (there's no harm in suggesting!). While traveling and working abroad, Matt and Shahir decide to discuss films with a strong sense of place, and what better way to do that than by looking at a film from the place they're in. Jon Garaño and José María Goenaga's "Loreak" is the first Basque language film to be submitted by Spain to the Oscars, making it a perfect gateway to discovering Bilbao. Ep 186: Halloween Nov 04, 2018

Show notes

Settle in for some pumpkin spice lacerations as we take in the fifth Halloween reboot-quel which brings back the worst Captain Kirk trick or treater. Michael Myers is finally let loose in this Blumhouse produced sequel to John Carpenters original indie slasher. Does this throwback have the chops to hack against the original, or will this franchise finally die a painful death? If you'd like to sneak up on us with a machete, let us know when and where via email at onlymoviepodcast@gmail.com or stalk us on Twitter at www.twitter.com/onlymoviepod See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 185: First Man Oct 28, 2018

Show notes

When the moon hits Ryan Goslings piercing blue eyes, will it be amore? Strap in for our review of Oscar Winner Damien Chazelle's First Man, the true story of how Neil Armstrong forgot to plant an American flag on the moon. Does this unconventional biopic eschew the heroics of the first man to convincingly explore what made him the first human, or does the defiance of exceptionalism make "whitey on the moon" an unresonant biopic? You can nominate to send us to the moon on SpaceX's first flight by emailing onlymoviepodcast@gmail.com or tweet us at www.twitter.com/onlymoviepod (don't forget to tag Elon Musk!)
