#22 Jason Bourne - Movies for Adults Review Aug 03, 2016
    Show notes

The Not Old Better Show, "Movies for Adults," Movie Review: "Jason Bourne."

"Jason Bourne." The character was created by Robert Ludlum who wrote a series of "Bourne" novels. Bourne is a CIA assassin who goes rogue after losing and regaining his memory in the first book of the series, "The Bourne Identity."

Matt Damon played Bourne in the hit film adaptation and went on to make two sequels, "The Bourne Supremacy" and "The Bourne Ultimatum" with director Paul Greengrass. Now nine years after "Ultimatum," Damon and Greengrass have returned with "Jason Bourne."

Even those who have never seen the movies know the name - secret agent Jason Bourne, a human wrecking machine played by Matt Damon.

As he claims, Bourne remembers everything—or at least, he thinks he does. With this restored knowledge he criss-crosses the globe, piecing together the new bits that have come to light. At the same time the fugitive is being hunted by another government trained asset played by Vincent Cassel with an ax to grind.

As such, this newest instalment of the Bourne movies offers an exciting script and plenty of action to keep you engaged. As a fan of the franchise from the beginning, I enjoyed learning more about Bourne's shrouded backstory. (Not to worry… no spoilers here). Moving at a fast pace, with lots of connections to recent world events, the movie brings a feeling of reality to the screen—rather than just entertainment.

for those who have followed Jason Bourne's journey since the first release back in 2002, it is nice that this 2016 script finally answers some of those elusive questions that have nagged us. Watching Damon return to his iconic role will also be gratifying for anyone who loves the world of spy-craft.

Directed by Paul Greengrass. Starring Matt Damon, Alicia Vikander, Tommy Lee Jones, and Julia Stiles, and featuring music by HiFinesse.

#21 Happy Bday Mick Jagger, a new dad! Jul 26, 2016
    Show notes

OUR NEWEST SHOW FROM NOT OLD BETTER: MUSIC TODAY

Happy Bday Mick Jagger, a new dad!

    Mick Jagger is 73!

As the lead singer of the Rolling Stones, Mick Jagger has become a rock legend for his gritty, blues-influenced songs and charismatic stage presence. Born Michael Phillip Jagger on July 26, 1943, in Dartford, England, Mick Jagger, the lead singer of the Rolling Stones, has become a rock legend, delighting fans for more than four decades. Leaving the London School of Economics to start a band with Keith Richards, Jagger took the Rolling Stones to the top of the music world with major hits like "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," "Angie" and "Miss You," propelling the band and himself to a status unknown by most performers. The oldest son of a teacher and a homemaker, Jagger was a good student and popular among his classmates. He developed an interest in American blues and R&B music at an early age and got his first guitar at 14. As a teenager, Jagger started collecting blues records from the likes of Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf. He and his friend Dick Taylor soon started a band together called Little Boy Blue and the Blue Boys with Jagger as its singer.

In 1960, Jagger was accepted to the London School of Economics. He lived at home and commuted into the city to attend classes. Also working on his band, Jagger soon added a new member, guitarist Keith Richards. The two had known each other growing up in Dartford. Exploring London's emerging blues scene together, Jagger and Richards spent some time at the Ealing Club. There they saw Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated play and were wowed by guitarist Brian Jones, who made guest appearances with the group. After a while, Jagger also appeared as a guest vocalist with Blues Incorporated.

Jagger is a father of seven children. He has a daughter with actress Marsha Hunt. Jagger was married to Bianca Perez Moreno de Macias, with whom he has a daughter.

In 1990, Jagger wed longtime girlfriend, model Jerry Hall. They had four children together.

In July 2016, news broke that Jagger was going to be a father again at the age of 73. Happy birthday, Mick.

Enjoy this archival video interview with Mick and Stones.

#20 Dr. Arthur Lupia, Author Intervew: Uniformed book review Jul 26, 2016

Dr. Arthur Lupia, Author Intervew: Uniformed: WHY PEOPLE KNOW SO LITTLE ABOUT POLITICS AND WHAT WE CAN DO ABOUT IT

"Voter ignorance is notorious and well-documented, but merely throwing more facts at voters is not enough. In this capstone work, political scientist Arthur Lupia synthesizes years of work with scientists and educators in all arenas to figure out how to increase issue competence among voters."

Welcome to the Not Old Better Show, I'm your host, Paul Vogelzang.

Citizens appear to know very little about politics and government. When asked simple questions on these topics, millions of people give incorrect answers. "Who is your US senator, or, who holds the majority in the house of representatives." Often voters give no answers at all to these and other civics questions. Given this state of affairs, it is not surprising that experts often deride the public for its ignorance and low voter turnout.

Our guest expert today is Dr. Arthur Lupia is the Hal R. Varian Collegiate Professor of Political Science at the University of Michigan. He serves on advisory boards for several science communication endeavors, including the Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education at the National Academy of Science and Climate Central. He is also Chair of the American Political Science Association Task Force on Improving Public Engagement, and despite all that's available on line and elsewhere, Dr Lupia will tell us how to cut through.

We have a lagging interest in politics. At least some of us do. But, during this election season, it means a great deal to be informed and Dr. Lupia will share with our Not Old Better audience what's going on and what he means by "un-informed."

Please join me in welcoming Arthur Lupia, Ph D, to the Not Old Better Show.

#16 Larry Iser Interview: Led Zeppelin, "Stairway to Heaven" On Trial Jun 17, 2016
    Show notes

LED ZEPPELIN ON TRIAL FOR CHORD THEFT: WHO OWNS THE CHORDS???

"Stairway to Heaven" is considered one of the most widely heard compositions in rock history and is the signature song of Led Zeppelin. Jimmy Page said the song "crystallized the essence of the band." Well, the band is accused of stealing the opening chords for their 1971 hit from another song.

That song, "Taurus," written in 1967 by the band Spirit are similar enough to let a jury decide whether Plant and Page were liable for copyright infringement.

Attorney Larry Iser, Kinsella Weitzman Iser Kump & Aldisert, who is not connected with the Led Zeppelin case, but specializes in the area of intellectual property law, and routinely advises his clients on matters concerning copyright, fair-use, clearances, and right of publicity. Larry Iser has represented the Beatles and Michael Jackson, Jackson Browne, and Crosby Stills and Nash.

Mr Iser is well published on the subject of copyright infringement and just yesterday, June 16, 2016 wrote in Forbes: 'Hamilton' And Copyright: Lin-Manuel Miranda Had His Eyes On Music History.'

#15 John Elder Robison, Interview: The Not Old - Better Show Jun 17, 2016

JOHN ELDER ROBISON, AUTHOR, NYT BEST SELLER, SWITCHED ON

WELCOME TO THE NOT OLD BETTER SHOW, I'M YOUR HOST, PAUL VOGELZANG.

As someone with autism spectrum disorder, John Elder Robison knows what it's like to feel emotionally removed from situations. John, author of the NYT best selling memoir, Switched On explains to me that there's this emotional language you're missing. There are stories in people's eyes. There are messages.

John Robison didn't fully understand what they meant until he received transcranial magnetic stimulation, TMS, a noninvasive procedure in which areas of the brain are stimulated with electromagnetic fields to alter its circuitry. By introducing current to the brain, doctors can probe the function of certain parts of the brain and we can even modify how different parts of the brain work.

Using transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS, doctors hoped to activate neurological pathways in his brain that would deepen his emotional intelligence. John learned much, and has been giving back ever since.

Please join me in welcoming The Not Old Better Show, John Elder Robison, author of the NYT best selling memoir, "Switched On."

#14 Judy Collins & Ari Hest Interview: Silver Skies Blue Jun 10, 2016

Judy Collins & Ari Hest Interview: Silver Skies Blue

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, and I'm your host, Paul Vogelzang.

Earl Nightingale, a recording artist, writer and radio personality said:

"Never give up on a dream because of the time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway."

That phrase truly encapsulates my guests today. Judy Collins, who The New York Times has dubbed "The Ageless Wild Angel of Pop," and singer, songwriter Ari Hest. Of course the audience of The Not Old Better Show, and the world, knows Judy Collins. Judy's ethereal, stunning voice has informed our lives since 1967. That was when her classic album, Wildflowers, zoomed up the album charts with her Top 10 hit single, the Joni Mitchell-penned "Both Sides Now." Ari Hest is, of course, newer to the scene, but over 15 years has established himself as an innovative, creative, "do it all" recording artist. Ari has released 8 albums, and over the course of a year, Ari wrote, recorded and released a new song every Monday, for his brilliantly artistic, imaginative project entitled "52." Every week for a year, releasing a new song, and on Mondays, no less. You can find out more about that project at Ari's web site, AriHest.com.

As audience of The Not Old Better Show you know that I spoke to Judy Collins not too long ago about her most recent tour, so it was with giddy frisson that I approached the assignment of speaking with Judy Collins again just now about her new album with Ari Hest, "Silver Skies Blue," and how wonderful this album is, with the great variety of music, and her process of finding exciting projects.

The album, again, "Silver Skies Blue," features new music written by Judy Collins and Ari Hest, and is out now, available everywhere you can buy music, including Amazon and iTunes, and you'll hear more from the album during today's interview. Ari Hest is one of Judy's favorite singer songwriters, and the two have appeared on stage together, reuniting for Judy's "Strangers Again" album, and now in true collaborative form, for "Silver Skies Blue."

Still on stage, Judy Collins and her new musical partner Ari Hest are now in the midst of a national tour. Of course you can find out more about the tour, Judy's music and her social media expertise at JudyCollins.com, but please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show, Judy Collins and Ari Hest.
