The Not Old Better Show Fitness Friday Series

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, Fitness Friday series, sponsored by HealthIQ. I'm host Paul Vogelzang. Remember, Health IQ, is an insurance agency that helps health conscious people like runners, cyclists, weightlifters, skiers, snowboarders and ice dancing pairs get lower rates on their life insurance. Hey, I gotta give a nod to the Winter Olympics. But, Go to HealthIQ.com/NOBS, to support the show, and learn more about the great healthy, fitness related life insurance quotes from HealthIQ.

Today's show is a great one, and very timely. We've got some Fitness Friday news and a report on why nutrition and diet count, and how to develop a strategy for actually losing weight.

    But, first the news…

A report first published in the BMJ Health Reports, 2 days ago, tells of the pain relieving benefits from swimming in cold water. A man who suffered constant pain after surgery cured it by taking a plunge in cold open water.

The man's case has been reviewed by doctors who suggest a short, sharp cold water swim may offer an alternative to strong painkillers and physiotherapy.

Find out more...check out today's Fitness Friday NEWS, and check out HealthIQ.com/NOBS

    Enjoy.

    Multigenerational Living Author Lisa Cini

    Proud Parenting Interview Series

As part of our Proud Parenting series, our guest today on the Not Old Better Show is Lisa Cini. For many in our Not Old Better audience, your parents are still living, maybe it's just your mom, as is the case for me, or just your dad, but as they age, with respect to their living arrangements, there's much to think about, such as: do they go into a care facility, or remain at their home, and another option, do they come live with you? The option to live with you, often referred to today as a multigenerational household is a very real, and excellent solution.

Our guest today is Lisa Cini, an award winning and internationally recognized Senior Living designer. Her first book "The Future is Here" Senior living Reimagined and has received rave reviews. Now she's just released her second book, "Hive, The Simple Guide to Multigenerational Living, Or, How Our Family Makes it Work." And her family does. They take care of each other. Lisa Cini refers to this as the "front porch community," and it's a real trend today.

The Not Old Better Show, Interview Series

Whether it's illness, injury, cancer, a new baby, we've all ben in the position of caring for a loved one. I've talked about my own situation just recently, and how exhausting and fulfilling it was at the same time to help my dad through his health challenges. Honestly, I wish I'd known a bit more at the time about my guest today, and his business.

We're going to be talking to HomeCareAssist CEO, Brian VanHook, who, along with his wife, Blair, founded the company, out of a desire to raise home care standards, identify the best options for families (Brian calls this group 'careseekers') and caregivers, revolutionizing how this process works.

Lots to consider at our age...join us for an excellent interview guest on an important subject.

As part of our Smithsonian Associates, Art of Living series, our guest today on The Not Old Better Show is Hugh Byrne. Hugh Byrne is the author of well received book, "The Here and Now Habit, How Mindfulness Can Help You Break Unhealthy Habits Once and for All."

The turmoil of daily life has left many of us coping with stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental, physical, and emotional problems. One promising source of relief has been uncovered through scientific studies: mindfulness. A contemplative practice rooted in Buddhist teachings, mindfulness cultivates inner calm and emotional balance. It's even been shown to cause structural changes to the brain. More and more, individuals, companies, and institutions are discovering its benefits in work and daily life.

This daylong workshop led by Hugh Byrne explores the Buddhist origins of mindfulness, discusses the benefits demonstrated in research studies, examines its role in changing harmful habits, and provides skills and practices to use in daily life.
