King James Bible: Background, Creation & Influence

    Smithsonian Associates, Interview Series

Our interview with Steven Galbraith and Hannibal Hamlin, who, together, both will provide us a fascinating overview of the dramatic history of English Bible translation, the reformers who shaped the bible, despite opposition from the Church, and the Bible's significant political influence.

The King James Bible of 1611 is one of the most influential books in the English language. The creation of this landmark translation was the culmination of a long and often unquiet history of the Bible in English dating back as far as 1000 A.D., when portions of the Bible appeared in Old English. It built upon the struggles of religious reformers who risked their lives by committing the "heresy" of translating the Bible into English. It borrowed freely from the labors of scholars tasked with new translations once the religious and political tides had changed. The men chosen to work on the King James Bible revised the translations of their predecessors with no idea of how influential and pervasive their results would be even four centuries later.

#177 Facing Fear, Dr Joseph LeDoux Feb 26, 2018

    Facing Fear, Dr Joseph LeDoux

    Smithsonian Associates, Interview Series

Why do we react the way we do when in danger? Why do we sometimes wrestle with levels of anxiety that don't quite reflect the situation at hand? Our guest today on The Not Old Better Show is neuroscientist, Dr. Joseph LeDoux. Until recently, research has focused on our physiological and behavioral responses (increased heart rate, freezing, flight, elevated hormones) to what we perceive as mortal danger.

Newer investigations now show that damage to the amygdala in humans (the brain's center of the freeze–flight–fight responses) prevents those responses, but not the feelings that danger engenders. Emotions, or feelings, actually derive from our cortical circuits, unique human features not seen in other animals.

This finding has broad implications for how we approach our understanding—and in particular, how to treat—these often problematic emotions. Neurologist Joseph LeDoux, professor of science at New York University and author of Anxious: Using the Brain to Understand and Treat Fear and Anxiety and The Emotional Brain: The Mysterious Underpinnings of Emotional Life, discusses the impact of this research and why it might change our current pharmacological and behavioral approaches to helping people reframe fear and its close relative, anxiety.

As part of the acoustic duo So We Are, LeDoux also shares his research through songs, with lyrics that showcase ideas about the mind and brain. After his presentation, he and Irish singer-songwriter Colin Dempsey perform some of their music, putting a new beat to their exploration of what makes us us.

Hospice & Palliative Care - Dr Laura Patel

The Not Old Better Show, Interview Series

We've got another great show today, and once again, this is an important one.

Today's show is important for a couple of reasons. First, it's a very personal story, one that I've lived, so to speak, with my own family. I've talked about this to you, my audience, once before, and I'll talk about it just briefly today, telling our family's personal story of hospice care, before we speak with Dr. Laura Patel.

Dr Patel, whom we'll hear from in just a bit is a hospice and palliative medicine physician. We discuss palliative care, and we discuss hospice, which as you all know, I'm grateful for, and a big fan of the hospice approach to hospice patients and their families. I don't normally do this, but I want to play a bit of my "pre interview" conversation with Dr. Patel, to set the stage for our full interview. Let me just jump in, mid conversation here, and you'll hear what I'm talking about in terms of my respect, trust and fondness in, and for, hospice.

by way of introduction, Dr. Patel is medical director, and Chief Medical Officer of Transitions LifeCare, and was named The Association for Home and Hospice Care "Physician of the Year." Dr Patel writes frequently on the subject of hospice, palliative care, and speaks passionately about what is needed for patients, hospice and non hospice, and is a strong physician's voice about well being as the ultimate goal in medicine.

    Enjoy.

The Most Famous Address in the World

White House Historian - William Seale

The President's House was a major feature of Pierre Charles L'Enfant's 1791 plan for the city of Washington. He envisioned a vast palace for the nation's leader, a building five times the size of the residence that would eventually be planned and constructed under the watchful eye of President George Washington.

Since then, the White House has been burned, reconstructed, renovated, designed, and redesigned, and it remains the home of the presidents of the United States.

In this series, four noted experts explore aspects of every corner of the famous building at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, where every decision, no matter how seemingly insignificant, has political ramifications.

Our guest today, one of those experts, is William Seale, White House Historian, and someone who's written prodigiously on the subject of historic buildings and their restoration.
