Four Centuries of Women in America

Historian Betsy Griffith - Not Old Better Smithsonian Associates

As part of our Smithsonian Associates Art Of Living interview series, we're joined today with Elisabeth Griffith. Historian Elisabeth Griffith, a biographer of suffrage pioneer Elizabeth Cady Stanton, leads a fast-paced series that examines the history of women in America from the colonial period through second-wave feminism. Each session covers approximately a century of American history, tracing the advances, setbacks, accomplishments, and complications of the nation's diverse women.

Griffith will answer questions, such as:

    • What about a new world benefitted women? Is American history a chronicle of women losing, rather than gaining, rights?
    • How have we defined appropriate roles for women? And for which women— "ladies," mill girls, slaves, or frontierswomen?
    • Over a dynamic period of dramatic change, the idealized True Woman evolved into the New Woman. The shift ushered in an era of higher hemlines, shorter hair, great migrations, widening sexual freedom, and voting rights.
    • Many historians consider that women's rights stalled after suffrage was won, but black women civil-rights leaders, labor organizers, and finally, feminists would slowly advance social change...what about Eleanor, Rosie, Rosa, and Betty?

    Prostate Cancer Detection News

Paul Steinberg, MD, Reads from His Book, "A Salamander's Tale."

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #215.

Yesterday, May 8, 2018, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) updated its prostate cancer screening recommendation statement to recommend that clinicians offer individualized PSA screening for men aged 55 to 69.

    Why the change?

Well in men age 55 to 69 prostate specific antigen or PSA screening yields a small potential benefit. Studies show that of 1000 men offered PSA based screening 240 get a positive result. Of those, 140 positive PSA results are false positives while 100 of the 240 get a positive biopsy showing definite cancer. 20 to 50 of the 100 with definite cancer will have cancer that never grows spreads or harms them.

    That is cancer over-diagnosis.

And, America's longest living prostate cancer survivor reads from his memoir about his long journey, "A Salamander's Tale."

    Enjoy.

    Fitness Friday News

Welcome to the Not Old Better Show, Fitness Friday series, I'm your host Paul Vogelzang and this is show #214.

Today's Fitness Friday show is a little different, but still tied to health, news and information. With emphasis on Fitness for All of Us.

This Sunday, May 6, the U.S. government will open nationwide enrollment for an ambitious experiment, titled "All Of Us." The idea, and where the name All of Us comes from, is that if they can build a large enough database comparing the genetics, lifestyles and environments of people from all walks of life, researchers hope to learn why some escape illness and others don't, and better customize ways to prevent and treat disease.

    HERE's the headline:

Wanted: A million people willing to share their DNA and 10 years of health habits, big and small, for science.

Join me, Join All of Us, and enjoy today's show about the 1,000,000 strong new data base study. Check it out.
