What Diplomats Know - Nicholas Kralev

Smithsonian Associates - Art of Living Series

Few countries around the world cultivate a well-trained corps of professional diplomats— career Foreign Service officers with in-depth expertise in managing a country's relations with other states. Ambassadorial and other diplomatic posts are occasionally given out as rewards for political connections and campaign success to people who need a crash course in under- standing and engaging foreign societies, influencing governments and publics, conducting difficult negotiations, anticipating threats, and taking advantage of opportunities.

Our interview today is with Nicholas Kralev, executive director of the Washington International Diplomatic Academy, he leads programs that teach diplomats what they need to know to be successful in an often-misunderstood and under-appreciated profession.

Leg Exercise and The Brain - Leg Day Matters

    Fitness Friday News

New research shows that using the legs, particularly in weight-bearing exercise, sends signals to the brain that are vital for the production of healthy neural cells. The groundbreaking study fundamentally alters brain and nervous system medicine -- giving doctors new clues as to why patients with motor neuron disease, multiple sclerosis, spinal muscular atrophy and other neurological diseases often rapidly decline when their movement becomes limited.

Keith Hernandez - I'm Keith Hernandez

I love this time of year. It's the start of baseball season. I grew up rooting for the SF Giants, attending 40-50 games a year at the old Candlestick Park, having been born in SF.

Certainly one of my favorite players, also Bay Area born and raised, was Keith Hernandez.

Keith Hernandez is a 5-time All-Star first baseman who won World Series Championships with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1982 and the New York Mets in 1986. He won the National League MVP Award and the batting title in 1979 and earned 11 straight Gold Glove Awards from 1978 to 1988.

Keith Hernandez has written a new book, titled, "I'm Keith Hernandez," and Keith will be reading from the book in just a bit, but, I want to offer a review of his great new book, "I'm Keith Hernandez."

    Enjoy

Antioxidant Nutraceutical Makes Blood Vessels Younger

    Fitness Friday News

Research out this week shows that older adults who take an antioxidant that specifically targets mitochondria see age-related changes in blood vessels reverse by the equivalent of 15 to 20 years within six weeks, a new study proves.

The study, published this week in the American Heart Association journal Hypertension, adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting pharmaceutical-grade nutritional supplements, or nutraceuticals, could play an important role in preventing heart disease-the nation's No. 1 killer. It also resurrects the notion that oral antioxidants, which have been broadly dismissed as ineffective in recent years, could reap measurable health benefits if properly targeted, the authors say.

Join us as we discuss this new research for living well, and living better. The Not Old Better Show.

According to Science Daily, Exercise could make the heart younger, less stiff, and more efficient

Today's show is part of our Fitness Friday series, and it's another great one in our Fitness Friday series. We've got some important news to share about the heart, and your body's ability to make the heart younger.
