    Apollo At 50 - Teasel Muir-Harmony

The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Science Series

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #368. As part of our Smithsonian Associates Inside Science Interview series, we are joined today by scientist, author, explorer, Dr. Teasel Muir-Harmony. Dr. Teasel Muir-Harmony will be appearing at the Smithsonian Associates program, July 10, 2019, and the title of her presentation is Apollo at 50: A History in Artifacts.

With those words, Neil Armstrong uttered what would become one of history's most famous one liners. Our Not Old Better Show audience, many of whom listened in from earth as Armstrong during the Apollo 11 mission was on the landing site of the moon. The entire Project Apollo ranks among the most bold and challenging undertakings of the 20th century. Within less than a decade, the United States leapt from suborbital spaceflight to landing humans on the moon and returning them safely back to Earth. Hundreds of thousands of people helped make these missions possible, while billions more around the world followed the flights.

Fifty years after the first lunar landing, our guest today, Dr. Teasel Muir-Harmony, curator of Apollo spacecraft at the Air and Space Museum, reassesses the history of Project Apollo through the most evocative objects of the Space Age. The material legacy of the Project Apollo missions is immense—with thousands of artifacts from capsules to spacesuits to the ephemera of life aboard a spacecraft represented in the Smithsonian's collections.

Dr. Teasel Muir-Harmony examines artifacts and the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum collections that highlight how Project Apollo touched people's lives, both within the space program and around the world, from the Wright Bros. at Kitty Hawk to Neil Armstrong at Tranquility Base. More than space hardware alone, the objects Dr Muir-Harmony features reflect the deep interconnection between Project Apollo and broader developments in American society, politics and life.

That, of course, that was our guest today, Dr. Teasel Muir-Harmony's reading from her new book, Apollo to the Moon: A History in 50 Objects (National Geographic) is available for sale and signing. Dorothy Butler Gilliam - Trailblazer Journalist

Smithsonian Associates Art of Living Interview Series

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #367. As part of our Smithsonian Associates HerStory author Interview series, we are joined today by author, journalist, visionary leader, Dorothy Butler Gilliam. Dorothy Butler Gilliam will be appearing at the Smithsonian Associates program, July 9, 2019, and the title of her presentation is Getting the Story Right

Dorothy Gilliam is that most rare of revolutionaries, one who not only climbs the barricades, but lets down a ladder to help others up, too. In her more than six decades at the centers of journalism in New York and Washington, she has often been the first African American woman and the best of everything. Her memoir shows us that a few can be both, but no one should have to. "We will have no democracy until each of us can be our unique individual selves." that's according to Gloria Steinem.

I found Dorothy Butler Gilliam to be candid, with quiet strength, elegance, a visionary leader, and an honored journalist. Dorothy Butler Gilliam's inspirational life story, in her new memoir, which we'll hear her read from in just a moment, is the journey of a daughter of the South who became a pioneering black woman journalist, an influential voice in the pages of The 1961 Washington Post, a national leader of the movement to foster diversity in the news media, and a dedicated mentor of countless aspiring young journalists. It is also the story of her role in a remarkable era of growth and influence of JFK, MLK, civil rights movement, and many other changes, all of which made for Dorothy Butler Gilliam's writing and storytelling, inside a leading American newspaper, now evolving in the digital age.

Marc Miller - Repurpose Your 2d Act Career

The Not Old Better Show, Business Buildout Interview Series

Welcome to the Not Old Better Show, Business Buildout series, I'm your host, PV, and this is episode #366. Today's show is brought to you by AutoSlash.

We have a great Not Old Better Show, Business Buildout career episode today, and my guest is author, speaker, leader Marc Miller. We've spoken to Marc previously, and today we're catching up to Marc at his home in Ajiici, (AH-ha-hic) Mexico. It's always wonderful speaking with my friend, Marc Miller. Marc is so upbeat, so positive and Marc has learned much in his move, now as ex pat, to Mexico. Marc has much to share and has done a great deal of experimentation with telecommunications, video, mobile and cloud based technologies to make our interview today work, and his own work work, while living outside of the US.

Of course, we'll have lots of links to find and connect with Marc Miller online, and where to find the newest edition to his excellent book, "Repurpose Your Career" which I've asked Marc to read from now…

That of course is our guest today, Marc Miller. Marc founded CareerPivot.com to help the baby boomer generation create successful and fulfilling professional lives. Marc's books, his workshops, his speaking, resources, podcasts, and Marc's stated strategy is to work with those of us "in the 2d half of life," who want to change.

Now, for my audience, let's answer some questions:

    * Does the idea of career change overwhelm you?

    * Do you feel trapped in your career?

    * Do you fear it's too late to make change?

Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show, author, public speaker, leader, Marc Miller.

Research on Motivation for Exercise as We Age

Fitness Friday News, and Interview Series

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, I'm host Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode 365. Today's show is brought to you by Heaven's Maid.

Our show today is part of our Fitness Friday series, and it's another great one in our Fitness Friday programs. We'll be hearing from returning guest, Sabrena Jo, who'll join us in just a minute. And, we've got an excellent, but brief interview with Tom Seearsh, MD about how to getting motivated to exercise and remaining motivated, all without a pill or focus on waist size, but all about you. We'll be speaking with both, but first our Fitness Friday News…

What's worse than losing your life? Losing a few bucks, apparently. According to research conducted by the American Heart Association, threatening coronary-heart-disease patients with money loss could help motivate them to exercise more, according to new research published Journal of the American Heart Association.

Creating financial motivation for healthy behavior isn't a brand-new concept. Insurance companies, for example, already use financial rewards programs to encourage folks to move more.

CEO Interview - Jonathan Weinberg, Founder AutoSlash

The Not Old Better Show, Interview Series

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #364. Today's show is brought to you by AutoSlash. As part of our Business Buildout Interview series, today's guest is the CEO of AutoSlash, Jonathan Weinberg. Jonathan Weinberg, AutoSlash's 42-year-old co-founder. Jonathan Weinberg got his start in technology when his father who worked in technology for United Airlines took young Jonathan to the Kennedy Airport in New York to lay cable under the international arrivals building. Jonathan Weinberg's career also includes a management role at Radio Shacks and a near-death experience directly below the airplane impact zone in the South Tower of the World Trade Center, I'll put up a link to Jonathan's account of his very real 9/11 experience, which is eerie because I was in Philadelphia, on that day and remember well the pandemonium. Back to Jonathan Weinberg, the idea to start AutoSlash came from his mother in Florida, who thought there was a business in all of the auto rental rate sleuthing he did before visiting her.

Today, AutoSlash is a website dedicated to saving people money on car rentals, but they now offer hotel services, too. AutoSlash is the only site that applies the best coupons/discounts from AAA, AARP, and many others, and then tracks rental price changes right up until the pickup date, and re-books users to capture these savings automatically—ALL FOR FREE!

I had the chance to ask one of the utmost experts, AutoSlash CEO Jonathan Weinberg, some questions about car rentals and the car rental industry. You guys know that I am far from an expert on this subject so I was very excited that he was willing to help out.

Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show, AutoSlash CEO, Jonathan Weinberg.

Thanks to AutoSlash for sponsoring the show today. Check out AutoSlash: https://www.autoslash.com For more information on today's show, or other details, please check out: https://notold-better.com

#363 Science of Breaking Bad - Dr. Donna Nelson Jun 17, 2019

The Science of Breaking Bad - Interview with Science Advisor, Dr. Donna Nelson

Inside Science, Smithsonian Associates, Interview Series

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Inside Science Series, I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #363.

When you hear the name "Walter White," of course, the anti-hero of "Breaking Bad" (played by Emmy-winner Bryan Cranston), you likely recall the show's emphasis on science, as Walter White is a scientist and high school chemistry teacher. During the course of five seasons of 'Breaking Bad," Walter White practiced a lot of ad-hoc chemistry—from experiments that explode to acid-based evidence destruction to an amazing repertoire of methodologies for illicit meth-making. But how much of his science is actually scientific?

As part of our Smithsonian Associates Inside Science & Technology series, we are joined today by Dr. Donna Nelson, who also worked on "Breaking Bad" and who played an important off-camera role on the show, that of official science advisor, which served as a professional opportunity to bring science into focus within the context of a wildly popular television series.

In her role as science advisor to the series, Dr. Donna Nelson, a professor of chemistry at the University of Oklahoma, explained, analyzed, and evaluated the show's portrayal of science, beginning near the end of season 1. The intent was not, of course, to provide a how-to manual for wannabe meth moguls, but to decode the show's most head-turning, jaw-dropping moments—and make sure they were scientifically accurate.

Nelson discusses the show's portrayal of chemistry, biology, physics, and subdivisions of each area including toxicology and electromagnetism, as well how she became involved in the show and some of the unusual questions posed to her. Dr. Donna Nelson's presentation, The Science of "Breaking Bad": Behind the Scenes With the Show's Science Advisor, will be Tuesday, June 25, 2019. Dr. Nelson's presentation will draw from her new book, The Science of Breaking Bad, which she co-authored, and which will be available for sale and signing.

Join me for a fascinating discussion with Dr. Donna Nelson, who'll add important, behind-the-scenes color about what it was like to work with the creator and writers of "Breaking Bad."

Please welcome to The Not Old Better Show, via internet phone, chemist, scientist, educator, Dr. Donna Nelson.

    Romulus Whitaker - Serpentine World

The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Interview Series

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Inside Science Series, I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #362.

When human and venomous snake habitats connect, the results are often lethal. Snakebites, according to acclaimed herpetologist Romulus Whitaker, have become a complex problem, earning the designation of a Category A "Neglected Tropical Disease" from the World Health Organization.

As part of our Smithsonian Associates Inside Science & Technology series, we are joined today by Herpatologist, scientist, and Emmy award winner Romulus Whitaker. Rom Whitaker who lives in India has been recognized for his many herpetological and conservation endeavors, including founding India's Madras Crocodile Bank. He won an Emmy Award for his 1996 National Geographic documentary, King Cobra, about the world's largest venomous snake. Also, he received a Rolex Award for Enterprise in 2008 for establishing 2 field stations in the rainforests of South India and the Andaman Islands.

Join me for a fascinating discussion about his work on snakebite mitigation, India's iconic snakes, and his ongoing efforts to preserve reptile habitats. Little wonder a species of Indian boa, Eryx whitakeri, was named in his honor.

Please welcome to The Not Old Better Show, via internet phone, herpetologist, scientist, educator, Romulus Whitaker. For more information about tickets and other details, please check out: https://smithsonianassociates.org/ticketing/tickets/romulus-whitakers-serpentine-world

Best of Enemies - Author Eric Dezenhall

The Not Old Better Show, Author Interview Series

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #361. Today's show is brought to you by Heaven's Maid.

As part of our Art of Living, author interview series, our guest today is award award winning author, journalist, crisis and damage control communications expert and thought leader Eric Dezenhall.

I first became aware of Eric Dezenhall because of his nationally recognized high stakes communications firm, in his role as damage control media expert. Eric Dezenhall is widely respected in communications circles and he is busy making appearances on NPR, CNN, FOX, CNBC, MSNBC, and many other publications and media channels.

Someone, I can't even remember who, told me Eric Dezenhall is a writer. I love to read, so I followed up, googling Eric Dezenhall Writer.

I was blown away by the search results.

To say Eric Dezenhall is a crisis communications expert and writer, puts less emphasis on his writing, and boy is he a writer. This is kinda like saying Steve Ballmer used to work for Microsoft, and now owns a basketball team. Ballmer is an NBA magnate!

But, back to Eric Dezenhall, our guest today…he is the author of ten books, including three non-fiction texts on crisis communications and corporate witch hunts. Eric is a serious writer and he has a gift for book titling! Some of his books are titled:

    • Nail 'Em! Confronting High Profile Attacks on Celebrities and Businesses
    • Glass Jaw: A Manifesto for Defending Fragile Reputations in an Age of Instant Scandal

    Both are non fiction books.

But, I really came to appreciate Eric Dezenhall the writer when I started reading Eric's fiction books, with titles:

    • Money Wanders
    • Jackie Disaster
    • Shakedown Beach
    • Turnpike Flameout
    • Spinning Dixie

And the fascinating account of the collaboration between the U.S. Navy and organized crime during World War II to secure American ports from Nazi attack, titled 'The Devil Himself.'

These books have a hilarious sense of humor, as does the man, Eric Dezenhall, himself. Most of the books are set in New Jersey, where Dezenhall himself grew up. But also, Atlantic City, specifically, and star Dezenhall's alter ego, J
