The Sixties - How the Decade Shaped America Today

    Smithsonian Associates Author Interview Series

Welcome to the Not Old Better Show, I'm your host Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode number 387.

As part of our Smithsonian Associates, Art of Living, author interview series, our guest today is Leonard Steinhorn. Leonard Steinhorn's expertise includes American politics, culture, and media; the presidency and presidential elections; political strategy and communication; recent American history; the 1960s; race relations in America. He is the author of The Greater Generation: In Defense of the Baby Boom Legacy.

Now, some out there in our audience of Not Old Better Show patrons might wince at some of the more garish staples of the 1960s, like bell bottoms, tie-dyed T-shirts, and unbridled hairstyles—especially when they turn up in our personal photo albums. But even though the decade is now half a century in the past, it's one that continues to reverberate in our society, politics, culture, and institutions to this day, but our guest today, Leonard Steinhorn, explores the decade's meaning and its legacy—which may well be the widening dividing line in our politics today

You'll hear from Leonard Steinhorn here today, and Lenny Steinhorn will be presenting at the Smithsonian Associates program, Tuesday, October 15, 2019.

But, now, please join me in welcoming via internet phone, author Leonard Steinhorn.

Active Aging Week-I TRY EMS-with Expert, Connie Ruiz

    Fitness Friday Expert Interview Series

Active Aging Week-I TRY EMS-with Expert, Connie Ruiz

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode # 385.

As part of our Fitness Friday series, today's interview is another great one in our Fitness Friday programs.

It's Active Aging Week here in the US, and we are celebrating aging and the benefits of active living at any age, Active Aging Week showcases the capabilities of older adults as fully participating members of society. This campaign also spotlights role models that lead the way. Learn how you can join with thousands of Active Aging Week supporters to help change the way we age. Active Aging is Redefining aging.

Today we'll be speaking with Connie Ruiz, founder and executive director of Personal20, which is an Electric Muscle Stimulation company, based here in Northern Virginia. "Electrical Muscle Stimulation." I'll say it again, Electrical Muscle Stimulation, known as EMS, is just what it says: electrodes stimulate muscle contractions using electricity. As a matter of fact, with EMS over 36,000 muscle contractions occur, targeting deep muscle fibers, while you are doing an exercise workout program with a skilled Personal Trainer who is approved to work with this new wearable technology. The "you" in the last sentence is actually "me," as I traveled to the Personal 20 facility and was connected to the various electrodes and then spent 20 minutes "exercising" with resistance, all coordinated by a personal trainer, Connie Ruiz. Is it safe? Good question. The Personal20 system from e-Fit is one of the systems available with full FDA clearance and approval as an official medical device passing the FDA's regulatory requirements.

We'll speak with Connie Ruiz today, and I'll review my progress with you over the next few shows, and I will be speaking with one of the Personal20 trainers about working with older adult clients, all for Active Aging Week.

Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show via internet phone, Connie Ruiz.

My thanks to Connie Ruiz, founder and executive director of Personal20 (https://personal20.com), and to all of you, my wonderful Not Old Better Show listeners. Let's talk about better…The Not Old Better Show. Thanks, everybody.

    Young Adult Author, Mara Rutherford

The Not Old Better Show, Author Interview Series

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #383. Today's show is brought to you by Plexaderm.

As part of our author interview series, today we're speaking with Mara Rutherford, author of the new book the "Crown of Coral and Pearl." We're fortunate that Mara Rutherford has agreed to read a passage from the book for us today, but let me tell you a bit about Mara.

First of all, let me tell you that Mara and I are related. My dear cousin Nancy had triplets, and Mara is one of three, who I've gotten to know well, and you'll know her a bit after our conversation today, but trust me when I tell you, this is not nepotism, but a great new book from a very hardworking author, that is an ideal read for all ages, but particularly so for grandparents and grandchildren. Hence, no favoritism here, just a great story for all.

We'll have links up for more information about Mara Rutherford, but briefly, Mara Rutherford began her writing career as a journalist but quickly discovered she far preferred fantasy to reality. As I say, Mara Rutherford is a triplet born on Leap Day, and Mara holds a Master's degree in Cultural Studies from the University of London. Mara has since lived all over the world along with her young family and Marine-turned-diplomat husband.

Mara Rutherford's debut YA fantasy CROWN OF CORAL AND PEARL is available for sale now, published by HarperCollins. And now let's listen as Mara Rutherford reads from her new book about the cost of becoming royalty.

Our show today is part of our Fitness Friday series, and it's another great one in our Fitness Friday programs. We'll be hearing from returning guest, Sabrena Jo, who'll join us in just a minute. But, by way of introduction, Sabrena Jo, of course, is a favorite with our Not Old Better audience and is the American Council on Exercise, Director of Science and Research Content. Sabrena Jo, about some very exciting research which suggests that with respect to eating healthy, which we all know is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, but being overly preoccupied with healthy eating can become physically and socially impairing.

The research, which as always, we'll link to, goes on to say that those who have obsessive-compulsive traits, depression and a previous eating disorder, and/or are preoccupied with their appearance and body image, are more likely to be at risk for developing the condition. Other eating habits such as being a vegetarian or vegan also put individuals at higher risk for developing the eating condition known as Orthorexia Nervosa.

This may be counterintuitive, but it is serious stuff, and here to share that specific research is Sabrena Jo, Director of Science and Research Content from the American Council on Exercise. Sabrena Jo will explain the research, why it's important, what the research means to health and exercise, and how best to focus on promoting healthy movement, rather than "working off" food or losing a certain amount of weight in a certain amount of weeks. I'm very interested in this subject and the research, so let's welcome back to

COKIE ROBERTS MEMORIAL AND INTERVIEW FROM 03/2019

    The Not Old Better Show

Cokie Roberts, a pioneering journalist who was perhaps best known for her savvy insight and analysis of politics, government and Washington D.C., died today at the age of 75. Her death was due to complications from breast cancer.

I will echo many who along with her family, will miss Cokie beyond measure, both for her contributions and for her love and kindness."

I spoke to Cokie and Steve Roberts in March of this year and thought I'd re-release this interview as Cokie expresses so well what we came to know about her, and what we'll miss: her kindness, generosity, sharp intellect and thoughtful take on the big issues of the day, including the 4th estate, which she discusses with me.

Roberts won many awards, including three Emmys, throughout her decades-long career. She was named a "Living Legend" by the Library of Congress in 2008.

Now my interview with Steve and Cokie Roberts…

The Only Plane in The Sky - Author Garrett Graff

The Not Old Better Show Author Interview Series

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #380. Today's show is brought to you by Mint Mobile.

As part of our author interview series, our guest today on The Not Old Better Show is author Garrett Graff. Garrett Graff has written a new book about the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on America, titled 'The Only Plane in The Sky, An Oral History."

I've had a chance to experience the book and have listened to several of the accounts, what author Garrett Graff refers to as the "Oral History," and this is an excellent book, for all audiences, but our Not Old Better Show audience will remember well the history of 9/11 and genuinely relate to these stories of survival and triumph.

Garrett Graff himself has an excellent, impressive history and is today a magazine journalist and historian. Garrett Graff has spent more than a dozen years covering politics, technology, and national security. He's written for publications from Wired to The New York Times, and served as the editor of two of Washington's most prestigious magazines, Washingtonian and POLITICO Magazine.

Garrett Graff joins us today to tell us more about his book, read from it, and describe the panoramic oral history of the September 11 attacks. As I say, the oral history draws on hundreds of interviews with government officials, first responders, survivors, friends and family members to recount events from the perspectives of firsthand witnesses. Let's listen now as President Bush's Chief of Staff Andy Card recalls his memories from that day…

My thanks to Mint Mobile for sponsoring today's show…remember that's MINT MOBILE dot com slash NOTOLDBETTER to CUT your wireless bill to 15 bucks a month!
