The Non-Prophets 21.48 11-27-2022 with Richard Gilliver, Student Doctor Ben, and Kelley Laughlin Nov 27, 2022
    Show notes

The Non-Prophets, Episode 21.48 airing Sunday, 11.27.2022 featuring Richard Gilliver, Student Doctor Ben and Kelley Laughlin.
Oh non-god I am stuffed. I don’t even want to invoke the Flying Spaghetti Monster as I don’t even want to THINK about food! If you are in the USofA we hope you had a great Thanksgiving (eg Gluttony day) and hope you don’t break the bank on all those sales (eg Greed day). Wonder if we can fit some more mortal sin days in the next few weeks. As for us The Non-Prophets we have also been stuffing ourselves with news articles for our hosts Richard Gilliver, Student Doctor Ben, and Kelley Laughlin to serve to you on a silver platter! Let’s get into it.
First up, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the 8 BILLIONTH person born! At the same time, we are already and 8 BILLION PEOPLE! Seems the religious took that “go forth and multiply” thing seriously. Well here’s an idea, maybe when people are more secular they will study the carrying capacity of the planet and practice safer population growth. Here’s hoping Elon Musk’s plan to go to Mars is not his own version of population control.
Up next. Show of hands, who here has heard the phrase “hate the sin, love the sinner”? Hmm I am seeing a lot of hands out there. Well seems that The Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints (not typing that out again) is living that. They seem to be just fine with Congress trying to codify gay marriage. They still think it is a sin and that you are all going to burn in hell forever and ever… Hey, it’s baby steps right?
Speaking of changing view points, seems some US Bishops are really worried about the their congregations views on abortion. Those diagonal moving church leaders seem to not be able to put their pawns in check. So they spend their knights deep in their rooks to stop all those nasty mates. Also somewhere queens are involved. Hey doing a whole thing on chess puns is harder than you think when you are board!
Lastly, We take a look back at Thomas Jefferson and his terrible, horrible, no good very bad Thanksgiving. No, wait that was Alexander who wasn’t Hamilton. Oh no I must not break out into song! AhHem… Seems it partly had to do with separation of church and state which he was a big supporter of. Then again he was also hypocritical in a lot of other aspects. So I guess we still have a lot of mixed feelings about this.
That will do it for this week. Be sure to tune in this Sunday at 3:00 PM Central. Most of the shows this week were pre-recorded, but Talk Heathen and The Atheist Experience are going to be live shows. See you all next week!

The Non-Prophets 21.47 11-20-2022 with Jason Sherwood, August, and Cindy Plaza Nov 20, 2022
    Show notes

The Non-Prophets, Episode 21.47 airing Sunday, November 20, 2022 featuring Jason Sherwood, August, and Cindy Plaza
This week you can join Jason Sherwood with an amazing panel of August and Cindy Plaza!
I know I say all the panels are amazing every week, but here’s the thing: THEY ALL ARE!!! So check us out this Sunday at 3:00 PM Central. Let’s get into it.
First up, Texas churches broke the law, and the law… didn’t seem to care. Uhh oh. Seems at least two different churches supported different candidates in this latest election. If only there was some kind of law that prevented that from happening. Maybe some Texas Senator could amend the tax code so that non-profit organizations couldn’t do that. Oh wait, that is a thing that happened. So did anything happen? Did those churches lose their tax exempt status? Well you will just have to tune in to find out, but you can guess...
Now over to the land of fine wine, fine food, and now racist nationalists? Seems a politician got into a little hot water for suggesting a boat of migrants go… well it was racist so you can guess which continent he wanted them to go to. We explore a little of the history of how they got here and hope that France can throw out their far right nationalists before very uncomfortable salutes become commonplace there.
Ever hear that the more education you have the less likely you are to believe in a god? So have we, but it seems so very religious news/research sources have a very different take on that. They also have the numbers to prove it! So are Atheists big old dummies or is it possible these sites have a narrative they want to spin? Check out these sites, but make sure you do your own research. Cindy did!
Lastly, we follow one man’s journey from being a Hindu Nationalist to becoming a humanist. It is a tale of misinformation, hatred, and tragedy. We wonder if the reasons he became a humanist are ones that can stand the test of time and wish him the best even if there were any kind of back slide.
That will do it for The Non-Prophets this week. Hope you have enjoyed all the studio shows this week and we will be back next week with another amazing panel and show!

The Non-Prophets 21.46 11-13-2022 with Richard Gilliver, Jason Friedman, Cynthia McDonald, and Kelley Laughlin Nov 13, 2022
    Show notes

The Non-Prophets, Episode 21.46 airing Sunday, 11-13-2022 featuring Richard Gilliver, Jason Friedman, Cynthia McDonald and Kelley Laughlin
It was once postulated: does a bear crap in the woods? Well I would like to know if the thing I just stepped in was Cryptid Poo or is it really some New-age Woo? Join Richard Gilliver and the amazing panel of Cynthia McDonald, Kelley Laughlin, and newcomer Jason Friedman as they delve deep into this week's topics. Let’s get into it.
First up, mind over matter? Nature vs. nurture? What are the best psychological approaches? In the past experts would segment things out. Breaking things into nice little packages from a subset of people who they were able to talk to. Human’s are a bit messier than that. So we explore more of the humanistic approach. Is it perfect? Maybe not, but humans are very complicated. Even if some claim they are simple. It’s just another tool to put in the tool box when dealing with people.
Next up, BLAME CANADA! In this case British Columbia as they are quickly becoming the most secular province in Canada. We explore how that has happened, get some takes from religious leaders in the area, and see if this is a sign of religion in the future for the Americas. I for one think it has to do with all the science Canadians need to deploy to keep themselves alive through all those cold winter months.
Then our very own Cynthia McDonald discusses her time at The Women of Color Beyond Belief conference. This year was not a great time for women in general, and especially women of color. With terrible court decision and trigger laws that will end up in the deaths of countless women, these brave many will get their voices heard.
Lastly, You are walking in the woods. There is no one around, and your phone is on 1% charge. Out of the corner of your eye, you spot something. (Big Foot?) He’s walking around a nest camera focused on some eagles. You quickly try to snap a photo, but as you do the screen goes dark. You run to your car hastily unlock the door. Getting in you grasp for the charger and with shaking hands plug it up. The phone comes to life and you see it. The last photo you have taken. It’s blurry, but you now know the truth! Then some guy in a ghillie suit comes up and knocks on your window asking, “hey did you see where I dropped that turkey?” Sorry, no big foot for you this time!
Well that will about do it for this week.

Blathering Blatherskite! Behold Blatant Blatheists broadcasts bodaciously! Who writes these things?! Watch them all on this Sunday’s Non-Prophets now premiering an hour later! Because of Daylight Savings ending. Still 3:00 PM Central. Let’s get into the segments!
Whew this is an article packed episode. Don't even have enough room for the "amazing write up!" That's ok you can find the full write up at tiny.cc/fbnp. So short descriptions will have to do it for YouTube. Hey YouTube! Can I have 6000 or 7000 characters please?!
First we talk about how it is so hard to get elected as an atheist. On that same line we explore how secular ideas are gaining ground in the political space. Maybe our second segment will destroy the first! Next, Former Vice President Mike Pence is striking a chord with Christian Nationalists by saying we do not have freedom FROM religion. FFRF might have something to say about that. Lastly, UK has a new Prime Minister and he's Hindu. Wonder how that is going to work for a theocracy where the people are mostly secular?
That will do it for this week’s Non-Prophets. Remember if you are in the United States that we have a very important midterm election. While we cannot tell you who to vote for, it is important to vote. You might think your voice doesn’t count, but I promise you it won’t count if you don’t speak in the only language politicians know! The Non-Prophets 21.44 10-30-2022 with Secular Rarity, Raphael Ryan, Kelley Laughlin, and Richard Gilliver Oct 30, 2022
    Show notes

Ghouls and Goblins rejoice as another spooky Non-Prophets descends upon the unsuspecting countryside. In this dark hour and a half we have our disturbingly knowledgeable panel lead by discount Legolas (Secular Rarity) With a confused cowboy (Richard Gilliver). Hello, we have Inigo Montoya (R Kelley Laughlin) you killed his father. Prepare to die! Our final panelist is the last thing you want to see when you die, the devilish Raphael! Check us out at the witching hour of 3:00 PM Central this Sunday!
    Let’s get into the articles.
First up, How do you celebrate Halloween? Do you get dressed up with the kidos and hit the neighborhood so you can steal all their treats once you get back home? Maybe you dress up as a scarecrow sitting out on your porch all night with a candy bowl on your lap to scare anyone to dares to trespass on your property. Maybe you go to a raunchy Halloween party so you can do the November walk of shame. Well for religious leaders there are many different options and we explore what some of them are!
    https://religionnews.com/.../when-it-comes-to-halloween.../
Speaking of what options religious leaders might do, Greg Locke… Seems there is a plan for Mr. Christian hate-preacher himself to hold another book burning. Well I guess it might get a bit chilly up there in the hills of Tennessee. Chances are it is going to be a direct repeat of his February roast. I wonder if people are going to remind him of the history once again of what side book burners tend to be in in history. Eh, I am sure he will just put those history books on the fire as well. Look, hate takes a lot of heat to prepare just right.
    https://onlysky.media/.../christian-hate-preacher-greg.../
Here’s a question for everyone. Have you ever heard the term “Bump in the night?” Well it seems that host of The View Joy Behar had a ghostly visits that showed her a new meaning. Is this like the time Ray got some pleasure from a visitor in his sleep? Was this more like one of the worst episodes of TNG where Dr. Crusher felt the ghastly presence of an alien ghost? I don’t know but if they start talking about making toes curl I am out!
    https://people.com/.../joy-behar-reveals-on-the-view-she.../
Lastly, we see some Sh!t internet apologist say in the form of a Texas mom being very vocal against direct to streaming Hocus Pocus 2. Her claims are that the movie will unleash Hell on your kids and your home. Can a confusing money grab really summon daemons and possess your pots and pans? Truth be told I did not see either this movie or the one that came out almost 20 years ago? Come on Disney!

The Non-Prophets 21.43 10-23-2022 with Jason Sherwood, Helen Greene, Richard Firth-Godbehere, and August Oct 23, 2022
    Show notes

The Non-Prophets, Episode 21.43 airing Sunday, October 23, 2022 featuring Jason Sherwood, Helen Green, Richard Firth-Godbehere and August
he time to take back The Non-Prophets is now! No longer will the gay frogs, or some kind of media, or billion dollar judgments stop us from bringing you the news and topics of the day from a skeptical humanist perspective. Especially since there are settlements and closures that can help us heal from history. This week I get to lead an amazing panel of Helen Green, Professor Doctor Richard Firth-Godbehere, and August. This episode was so packed we hardly were able to end it properly! Let’s get into it.
First, we start in our own backyard of Austin Texas. Where friend of the show and shouty conspiracy broadcaster is ordered to pay nearly a billion dollars in damages to the victims and families of the sandy hook school shooting. Will this get appealed? Will he show up to that appeal? Does he have any appeal? It’s hard to say. The good news is he can always start over by going back to the Austin Public Access station.
Next up we head over to the Equal Rights state. Awesome, that means only good things coming out of Wyoming right? A ranch for troubled teens… Oh no. Closes following abuse allegations. Oh come on! Seems this ranch is little more than a work camp designed to use impossible working conditions and violence to keep teen girls in line. Oh so it can get worse! Well fine they are closed down at the very least that has to be a step in the right direction. Except the state didn’t shut them down. This one’s a rollercoaster.
Whew, well maybe we can take a little look back. Let’s see Salem Witch Trials! Dang it! For this we explore what happened in those days and how the media has turned it into a running joke. Us Non-Prophets are not laughing though. We take a hard look at our history so that we can stand and say never again on our watch will we let this happen again. We won’t stand by while others minimalize the idea of a “witch hunt”
Finally this week we talk about Vatican II and the rise of Atheism. At the Vatican sees it at least. Many a strawman will be talked about. We will also see the basis of theist apologetics that persisted for decades. With so many generalizations and misunderstandings, it’s amazing Atheists and Theists can talk together at all.

The Non-Prophets 21.42 10-16-2022 with Richard Gilliver, August the Atheist, and Cindy Plaza Oct 16, 2022
    Show notes

The Non-Prophets, Episode 21.42 airing Sunday, October 16, 2022 featuring Richard Gilliver, August and Cindy Plaza
This week we got Richard Gilliver doing his best ASMR while August and Cindy back him up with nothing but the facts. I wasted too much time with a Picard speech so let’s just get right into it!
First up, A Nobel prize winner is in some hot water. Why might you ask? Well I will give you three guesses with just one hint. He Catholic bishop from Portugal. Well where he is from isn’t really the important part so you blew a guess on that. No, it’s not because he tried to move in a straight line when he is only supposed to move diagonally. Ok, you guessed it, it is due to sexual abuse. We also get some real time fact checking in this segment so be sure to pay attention to this one!
Next up, The women or Iran are starting to protest their oppressive wear! This has reverberations of other feminist protests in both the US in the 60’s and in Iran when the Shiite regime took over in the late 70’s and 80’s. Veil burnings echoing the bra burnings an ocean away. Hopefully it doesn’t take a generation or two to get the freedoms they deserve and that their male counterparts wield over them like a deadly weapon.
We then turn back to the states and a massively hypocritical situation. It seems like a family values candidate doesn’t quite practice what he preaches. Then again we are talking about Herschel Walker. Do we always know what he is trying to preach? He is just one of the many that got caught, but this time the hypocrisy is about an abortion(s?) of a girlfriend. He is just one name in a long string of conservative leaders. That’s not to say conservatives bad and liberals good by default. It is telling though how some people want to make rules, but then not follow them in their daily life. Look, all we ask is for consistent character growth!
Lastly, We have a step in the right direction with a little bit of a ghost story. One that chills Christian Nationalism to the bone. A story that can only be told so very close to Halloween. There is a creature growing. A Secular Government Caucus that will stop at nothing to hunt down Christian Nationalism and stop them from ruining people’s lives. They want to put a stop to “Project Blitz”. They want to keep gods out of public schools. Christian Nationalism GET OUT! The call is coming from within the Minnesota State Legislature!

The Non-Prophets, Episode 21.41 airing Sunday, October 9, 2022 featuring Kelley Laughlin, Phil The Caribbean Skeptic, and August
Temperatures are dropping all over the Northen Hemisphere, but here in The Non-Prophets studio things are heating up! That is because this week’s special guest is Phil the Caribbean Skeptic. He is joined by August, and first time conductor (as far as you know) R Kelley Laughlin. So break out the rum (responsibly) and get ready for an amazing episode! Let’s get into it!
First up, on the Internet Apologist are saying some shit yet again. Seems a pastor in Atlanta wants to teach how you should pray. Now what would you pay for this 4 week intensive course? $10,000? $100,000? A cool $Million!? Well good news you only need to pay $1500! That’s a steal considering it used to be up to $2000! Seriously, can you put a price tag on your immortal soul? Pastor Juantia Bynum dares to say YES! Maybe, I should start my own anti-prayer institute. This would have nothing to do with the new RTX 4090 coming out, I have no idea what you are talking about!
Next up, Remember high school? The endless classes, annoying pep rallies, and assemblies asking you what you are going to do with your life? Well a school in Louisiana decided to hide a religious service in the promise of a college and career fair. Now that seems bad enough, but what they did once the doors were closed was even more disturbing. This conversation gets a bit heated as August and Phil have a great back and forth.
Time to Step in the Right Direction with Cuba? In Cuba love rules as gay marriage is legal. Not just some court decision like in the US. It is codified law! Our panel congratulates Cuba on being so open and explores a little of their history in Pride. They are also allowing adoptions and expanded women’s rights! Now we are not saying you should escape to Cuba as a way to get personal freedoms, but this was a great step and hope to see more of it around the world!
Lastly, what happens when you mix faith with science? If you watch any shows on the Atheist Experience Network of shows you know there tends to be a lot of goal post moving. We see a little of that in our last article about the images that are coming back from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Trying to find meaning and context with faith through beautiful images. Don’t get us wrong, the images coming from JWST are beautiful and amazing. The data we get back can push our understanding of our universe further than we thought possible. Don’t need a 2000 year old book for that!

The Non-Prophets, Episode 21.40 airing Sunday, October 2, 2022 featuring Secular Rarity, Neil the 604 Atheist, Kelley Laughlin and Scott Dickie
First up, you know your racist uncle who will stop at nothing to ruin Thanksgiving? Well it seems him and a majority of Republicans support calling the United States a Christian nation. This is not surprising. With the article of last week saying Christians will “soon” be in a minority, and science gaining ground, it tracks that Christians are feeling more persecuted than ever before. So can’t wait to hear about how they are losing while drinking out of their holiday cups in a few more weeks…
Next up, we take a look in a book, but reading rainbow is a little different these days. One of the headlines we have been tracking over the past few months are all the book bans going on. We have also seen good old fashioned book burnings. Seems no one has told the older generations about e-books, tablets, or phones. While making it difficult for people (eg someone please think of the children!) to gain information is terrible. It seems that someone forgot to tell these banners that PDFs exist. You know if they just ban the internet for themselves they can set up their own echo chamber and we can all go on with our lives. One can dream.
Mooving on. Two cow segments in as many weeks? Well this one is more about the end of days this time around. You see, five red heifers have been brought to Israel as a sign that temples should be rebuilt, or descend from the heavens, or something. I mean it’s like prophesy right? Its not like someone could read Numbers 19:2 and totally say that is a sure way to know The Bible is real. I mean fulfilling prophesy from well known materials would just be silly and could never be proof. Right?
Lastly, why are atheist numbers growing all over the world? Researchers set out to study that very phenomenon. Could it be that a book that is full of contradictions and doesn’t account for things that actually happened is no longer believable? Is it the hyper woke media elite really controlling the youth through memes and the tick tocks (sic)? Maybe the aptly named “Kinda obvious if you think about it” study will shed light onto what is going on. Solid Rick and Morty reference!
Well that about does it for this week. Again to our friends and family affected by hurricane Ian, please stay safe as you pick up the pieces that storm has left behind. We want to see you back here for even more episodes!
