Talking Crypto with Dr. Chris Vo Aug 25, 2022
    Show notes

    About:

    • Dr. Glenn recently spoke with a fellow Vo, Dr. Chris Vo, known as the “crypto dentist.” Although the two aren’t related, Glenn jokes that there are so few “Vo’s” in the area they might as well be cousins.
    • Chris is one of the founders of “The Crypto Dentist,” a two-man team run in tandem with his pal, Mitch. At the Crypto Dentist.
    • Some people may assume crypto is a “scam.” Many invested have endured a “beatdown”—including Glenn and Chris.
    • However, Glenn notes that many people continue to invest in stocks despite their volatility, yet they don’t write the stock market off as “BS.” He knows it’s important to remember that “these things are cyclical in nature.”
    • At the Crypto Dentist, Chris aims not only to fill in gaps where knowledge is lacking but to combat the rampant misinformation circling the internet. There are many sources and people to avoid sharing ill-founded advice and even spreading scams. Chris values credibility first and foremost—“I’m a dentist, I have a reputation, and I’m trying to lead my colleagues.”
    • Although many people may be interested but afraid to invest in crypto, Chris says now may be the best time to follow through. He illustrates the example of a mall in which everything is 80% off—would you go home and come back when everything’s at retail price? “The time to buy is when everything’s on sale,” Chris says, “Which is right now.”
    • Although Chris has devoted himself to dentistry.” He grew up fascinated by technology; it is surprising to learn that Chris began mining Bitcoin in 2017.
    • Glenn recalls the “dot-com crash,” and he notes that although the crash occurred, “that doesn’t mean dot-coms weren’t worth anything.” In fact, “what it showed was that the cream rises to the top.” That is, the strongest competitors made it through the fallout.
    • As a dentist, Chris often sees his colleagues struggling to figure out how to invest. The Crypto Dentist’s mission is to provide “basic educational courses” for those who are just starting to test the waters. He believes it's an effective way for dentists to build a passive income.
    • That’s not to say investing comes without its risks. Chris believes the best way to help offset risk involves investing in one of the “blue chips” of the crypto world—Bitcoin and Ethereum.
    • Like all cryptocurrencies (and stocks, for that matter), Bitcoin “goes up, then down.” However, “on a long trajectory, it’s going up.” That’s why Chris thinks Bitcoin is the first asset dentists should invest in.
    • Chris emphasizes that before anyone buys, they should know precisely what they’re getting into. “I’ll tell you what’s not a winning strategy: buy high and sell low without conviction. That’s what happens a lot,” Chris says.
    • Your security and ability to succeed are top priorities. That’s why Chris is upfront with his clients about hard lessons he’s learned from his investment journey. For example, Glenn and Chris were impacted by the recent decline of the Celsius Network, a sort of “crypto bank.”
    • This isn’t a criticism of crypto’s potential, but Chris points out that crypto is an experiment “the same way the internet was an experiment… 15-20 years ago.
    • When you turn to Crypto Dentist to learn more, you’ll become better-versed in risk management. Chris emphasizes that “a balanced portfolio has high-risk portions of it and low-risk portions of it”—it’s all about finding that spot that’s best for you.
    • The Crypto Dentist recently offered a course on all the basics for those making their first steps into the world of crypto. Keep an eye out for upcoming events (and possible upcoming discounts). Of course, you can always contact Chris by finding him in the Nifty Thrifty group or visit his website cryptodentist.net to learn even more!

    • According to Chris, what is to blame for the recent crash?

Going Crazy with your Dental Supplier Aug 24, 2022
    Show notes

    SHOWNOTES:

    • This week, Dr. Glenn Vo was happy to have Jay Glazer—or “Crazy Jay”—and Howie Friedman from Crazy Dental on the podcast.
    • Crazy Dental is a subsidiary of DC Dental—the fastest-growing authorized independent dental supply company in North America—and Jay is their Director of Business Development. Meanwhile, Howie is the COO/CFO of DC Dental.
    • Crazy Dental has been serving our community for some time now, always hooking up our members with Nifty deals and helping us to navigate the minefield of ordering the right supplies at the right price.
    • Many of you likely know of Jay and Howie or have even spoken to them directly. Whenever our community is in need of something—whether it’s PPE, dental equipment, etc.—the guys over at Crazy Dental are always reaching out to lend a helping hand.
    • To Jay, the name of the game is “bending over backward” to take care of his clients. After doing so much for our community, the proof is in the pudding. But let’s talk a little about the man before we talk about what he can do for you.
    • Prior to joining DC Dental, Jay worked in the Non-Profit and Retail business sectors. During his 7 years as a DC Dental sales rep, Jay built his book of business up into the many millions a year by showing both care and tenacity to his doctors and offices.
    • Thus, Jay was promoted from a DC Dental sales rep to the Director of Business Development at both DC Dental and Crazy Dental. In the 3.5 years since entering his new role, Jay has already navigated 13% growth yearly for each of the 2 companies.
    • Jay, along with his wife, has founded several popular non-profit institutions. Together, they have nine beautiful children. Jay sits on several non-profit national and local boards and committees, plays sports, and coaches his children's sports teams.
    • Tune in to witness Glenn’s screen share presentation as he visits the “special landing page” only available to Nifty Thrifty members. Even better, Howie and Jay help him navigate the “special site” as they showcase how you can navigate through it, find the best prices, and enable discounts.

    Learn about:

    • What makes Crazy Dental so “crazy-efficient,” according to Glenn?
    • How can you save more money with their 110% price match guarantee and complete transparency?
    • Why is Crazy Dental a way better alternative than searching all over the internet and Facebook to negotiate, price match, and find the best prices?
    • How does Crazy Dental expedite the buying process and make everything easier for you? What’s their step-by-step process to help you get your bargains without a hassle?
    • How is Crazy Dental run by both machines and people, and how does this balance enable them to keep their costs super low? Why does Howie believe that this dynamic is the “new way” to do business?
    • Why is Crazy Dental especially helpful for startup dental practices?
    • Why does Jay not believe in telling you which product to buy? How does he leave the choice up to you by sending over product lists? How can you ask Jay for a product list?
    • Hint: it’s super easy!
    • What price-matching challenge does Glenn have for you?
    • And more!
    • So, what’re you waiting for? Reach out to Jay on Facebook or email him at jay@crazydental.com. And don’t forget to visit the “special landing page” made just for us!

    • Many Nifty Thrifty members may be familiar with Dr. Glenn Vo’s guest, Sean Ryan of Medidenta.
    • For those of you who haven’t been introduced yet, Sean is known as the “Head Cheese” at Medidenta. The direct-to-dental company has been evolving over the course of 80 years into the force it is today. Although Medidenta has been through its share of changes, they’ve always been creators, innovators, and distributors of affordable, premium dental products.
    • During this live stream, Sean explained how, although Medidienta is known for its deals on a massive variety of hygiene products, the company has grown to offer even more to the dental community. Medidienta has expanded to provide educational resources to dentists, including free CE courses! Sean is confident that Medidenta has turned into “a powerhouse now more than ever.”
    • Glenn vouches that “whether you’re a new practice, a growing practice, or a mature practice,” Medidenta has products within its catalog made for you. At Nifty.Medidenta.com, you can access almost every product offered at a discounted rate for members of the community (plus additional sales)!
    • Here, you can find everything, including bulk deals on handpieces. Sean is even open to negotiating custom deals for members of the community who reach out to him.
    • If you ever need help troubleshooting an issue with one of their products, a member of the Medidenta team will be happy to assist you over the phone. Glenn speaks from personal experience when he says Medidenta strives to go the extra mile for their customers.
    • Medidenta also boasts a huge, unique endo line. Sean emphasizes that “when you buy an endosystem, you’re also getting free education.” Dr. Carlos Spironelli Ramos, a renowned PhD in endodontics, helped design Medidenta’s endo products, but the influence of his expertise doesn’t end there. Dr. Ramos can answer any questions about how to use these units, as well as questions on file systems and endo in general.
    • For even more education, Glenn encourages dentists to visit Medidenta.com/education. Here, you’ll find free online CE courses taught by the likes of Dr. Ramos and other qualified experts. The next upcoming event features Dr. Sean Whalen’s live Q&A on pediatric dentistry on August 16th.
    • In September, you can attend Dr. Ramos’s in-person event in Las Vegas. Here, you can try Medidenta’s endo unit and a variety of different file systems.

    • Which other CE courses will Medidenta offer in the near future?

International Academy of Sleep Free September Vegas Blueprint Aug 04, 2022
    Show notes

    Show Notes:

    • Implementing sleep dentistry in your practice takes more than just getting the clinical skills. It's also about knowing how to get paid through medical insurance—and that's the big difference between those who do a few cases every month, to the ones who do dozens.
    • For this week’s episode of the Nifty Thrifty Dentists podcast, Dr. Avi Weisfogel—Founder of IAOS—joined Dr. Glenn Vo via FB Live to talk about their upcoming courses and how you can effectively implement Sleep Dentistry in your practice.
    • IAOS is an organization that helps dentists build businesses to successfully diagnose and treat sleep apnea. Over 200 dentists across the country have successfully deployed the IAOS model to create stand-alone sleep businesses to run alongside or in the place of their dental practice.
    • Getting paid through medical insurance can be difficult to navigate for any dental practice. But when it comes to sleep apnea, insurance companies make it extra difficult for practice owners to make money.
    • Avi knows how to navigate the behind-the-scenes process to prevent your claims from getting rejected. It’s not easy, but the dividends you’ll reap and the impact you’ll make are worth it.
    • Sleep dentistry can be a good way to earn passive income as well—take it from a fellow dentist Avi helped to “live the dream.” He has a practice in Manhattan but lives in Ohio; he only comes in for two Mondays each month to see five to seven patients a day—everything else is done via telemed.
    • What’s Avi’s story?
    • Avi got into sleep dentistry right out of school in 1998, he saw his first sleep patient three days into his year-long residency.
    • 1999 when Avi was more of an amateur—all his knowledge came from attending a weekend-long course that wasn’t too different from today's courses.
    • The patient soon returned and told Avi that he had changed her life. From there, Avi understood the power of sleep dentistry.
    • Eager to explore how he could make a difference in the world of sleep, he spent countless hours trying to implement OSA treatment within his practices using traditionally-taught methods. But he failed to make it a meaningful part of his practice.
    • When Avi had his practice and advertised for sleep apnea treatment, he got maybe one or two to come in. Even then, he’d have to send those patients to a physician.
    • Thus, early on, Avi learned that implementing sleep apnea treatment into a dental practice can be a headache unless you know how to control the whole process.
    • After over 10 years of trial and error, Avi acquired Healthy Heart Sleep, a Durable Medical Equipment (DME) company with no relationship to his dental practice. Through this company, he worked with doctors from across the US to help them establish diagnostic programs within their medical practices and direct the recommended treatment paths for each patient.
    • By 2013, Avi began to help other dentists by sharing this unique method with them so they could build similarly-designed businesses. As a result, IAOS was born in 2016.
    • Avi is currently offering a program for practice owners interested in sleep apnea. In this weekend course, you’d get an idea of what you’re getting into, learn about what’s possible, and find out whether it makes sense for you to put in the effort to pursue the full program.
    • You’ll have the opportunity to learn how to “create” patients, know where sleep apnea patients come from (referrals, current patients, etc.), and more.
    • Even better: Avi is offering free courses—in Las Vegas—for anyone who wants to dip their toe in the water and see if they’d like to take some of his other sleep dentistry courses.
    • Learn about:
    • What’s a “Step 27,” according to Avi?
    • When Avi took his first sleep dentistry course in 1999, how were they strictly science-based?
    • And more!
    • Email Avi at heath@iaos.com or meet him in person by joining him at one of his free courses in Las Vegas.

OnDiem: On-Demand Dental Staffing Platform Jul 27, 2022
    Show notes

    Show Notes

    • This week, Dr. Glenn Vo was super excited to have the Founder and CEO of OnDiem, Joe Fogg, on the podcast. Glenn has been trying to get Joe to speak on the Nifty Thrifty Podcast for some time now, but Joe might just be the busiest man in dentistry.
    • OnDiem is a staffing agency that has modernized the temp agency. Instead of technology leveraging humans, OnDiem is all about humans leveraging technology to help their customers—customers like Glenn.
    • OnDiem's name comes from the services they provide. When you think of “on-demand,” you might think of television services. However, OnDiem aims to give an “on-demand” service for dental practices that are looking to hire a hygienist.
    • About two or three months ago, Glenn had a staffing issue—there was a lack of hygienists in his dental practice. While OnDiem didn’t have much of a presence in Texas at that point, Joe was able to lend Glenn a hand.
    • Those same hygienists that Joe helped Glenn to find turned out to stick around, too—they’re still working for Glenn at his dental practice.
    • Joe was able to help Glenn thanks to how hard he and his team have been working behind the scenes. They’ve been building a significant population to cover the entire country, launching a massive national rollout with so many initiatives.
    • Joe believes that humans have opportunities in “per diem” and “carpe diem.” Over 50% of hygienists are part-time, meaning they have extra days off and more opportunities to earn money. They have an opportunity to go earn some extra money and get more exposure to other dental practices, learn more, etc.
    • Joe and his team at OnDiem have learned that most private dental practices don’t have HR or a payroll—they outsource that to their CPA. When it comes to working with other temp agencies, it can be a headache and a hassle to go through all the paperwork.
    • OnDiem built a staffing system that would eliminate the stress, facilitate the process, and make it easy to find a temporary hygienist without all of the risk involved in working with alternative temping agencies.
    • One of the best things about OnDiem is that they don’t charge you a cent until they’ve actually delivered value to your dental practice. They have something called the “OneShift Guarantee” which means they don’t charge you until one shift has been completed.
    • Learn about:
    • What kind of compliance issues arise with temp agencies? How does OnDiem take care of everything for you?
    • What makes OnDiem different from other temp agencies?
    • Why are compliance issues even harder when you’re working with a DSO?
    • How much risk are you running if you don’t thoroughly handle compliance matters?
    • What does Joe have to say about “per diem” vs. “carpe diem”?
    • Why does Glenn vouch for OnDiem, as a client of theirs?
    • What is OnDiem’s ClearPay program? How can it help you save money?
    • What new initiatives does OnDiem have coming down the pipeline?
    • How does OnDiem’s software go to work for you and make the hiring process so much easier?
    • And more!
    • Tune in to watch Joe go through an overview of the two pricing models offered by OnDiem, the savings you can make on their fees, etc.
    • Visit OnDiem’s website at https://ondiem.com/ and initiate a chat with the pop-up box. That’s going to be a person on the other side of it, not a robot!

Dental Start Up to Dental Acquisition with Dr. Kari Mann and Dr. Glenn Vo Jul 14, 2022
    Show notes

    NOTES:

    • Dr. Glenn Vo was excited to sit with a good friend for this week’s episode of the Nifty Thrifty Podcast. Dr. Kari Mann has a lot of stories to tell and advice to give as someone who has evolved from owning a start-up to completing the acquisition of another practice.
    • If you tune into the video version of this week’s episode, you’ll quickly notice that Kari has been doing pretty well for herself. She tuned in from Cape Coral, Florida, where she sat in her lavish home.
    • After graduating from dental school, before Kari moved to Florida
    • Kari always knew she wanted to own a practice; Kari’s father helped with the business. He would visit practices throughout Seattle—probably about 40 or 50 in all—always video chatting with Kari as he scoped out each location.
    • Unfortunately, Kari and her father struggled to find a practice that was either realistically priced or willing to sell to a recent graduate. Kari was also surprised to experience sexism when she came across a guy willing to sell to a new graduate but not to a “young female.”
    • Eventually, Kari found a practice that was considered a “Pseudo Startup.” The practice had been owned by a dentist for 40 years who—instead of selling it and getting out of it at its peak—had let the practice just drop off.
    • In other words, his dental practice was struggling to stay afloat. There wasn’t much cash flow thanks to a very small patient base.
    • Thus, Kari was left with the “bones of an office” with outdated and unreliable equipment. She had very little to go off of, building a brand new dental practice within a failing one.
    • Kari and her dad made do with 1,000 square feet to host four ops, a three-person front desk, a patient lobby, a staff room, a staff bath, a doctor’s office, a sterile lab, and a laundry area.
    • No matter, Kari and her father got to work. Her father utilized his construction background to help Kari set herself up for success.
    • Kari owned this Seattle practice for four and a half years. It was on track to do $1.6 million when she sold it. She worked four days a week—seeing patients about 30 hours a week—taking two-hour lunches every day so she could work on the administrative stuff.
    • Kari’s Seattle staffs were two full-time hygienists and two full-time restorative chairs. And while there still was room for growth, Kari decided to walk away.
    • Kari had had enough with the weather in Seattle. She was having a hard time during the winters especially, not to mention the living costs.
    • The lack of daylight was a big factor for Kari, as the sun wouldn’t come up until 9 am before dark again at 3:30 pm. She wasn’t keen on going to work in the pitch black and coming home in the pitch black every day.
    • If Kari could say something to anybody looking to buy a practice, it’s this: set whatever prospectus a broker gives you on a practice aside and get an accountant—especially if you’re not a numbers person.
    • Next, go through the numbers. Get to know your P&L, tax returns, monthly costs, cash flow analysis, malpractice, tax burden, etc.
    • If the numbers don’t pass the “stress test,” it might not be worth taking practice on. If you’re not the type of person to go in and flip that practice, then it’s not a good fit.
    • For Kari, being in a group practice or owning a thousand practices isn’t something she’d be interested in. One of the big reasons why Kari was all for owning her practice was because it meant she could do as much of the clinical dentistry as possible—she loves the process of sitting in the chair and treating patients.
    • Learn about:
    • What’s the difference between a “true acquisition” and a “Pseudo Startup”?
    • And more!
    • Kari agreed to come onto a future episode of the Nifty Thrifty Podcast, so you can bet on seeing her again. She’s currently remodeling her new practice in the vacation land of Florida, so stay tuned to witness what path she chooses!

The Future of Dentistry Powered by AI Jun 23, 2022
    Show notes

    SHOW NOTES:

    • In this day and age, you must live under a rock if you haven’t heard about AI. That said, many dentists seem to forget about Dental AI.
    • Ophir Tanz is the CEO of Pearl, a company that is at the forefront of Dental AI. Dr. Glenn Vo has some mutual friends who work for Ophir’s company, and he respects their co-founder—a fellow dentist—very much.
    • Glenn was pumped to have Ophir on for this week’s episode of the Nifty Thrifty Podcast, especially because he knows that Ophir’s heart is in the game. AI geek has meaningful connections in the dental world.
    • There are so many different types of AI from pattern recognition to text-oriented software.
    • Pearl specializes in a subfield of AI called computer vision, which basically teaches computers to really see and interpret the world in the same way humans do.
    • No matter how good of a dentist you may be, you’re a human—and humans make mistakes. Dentists carry a massive burden as they constantly hustle and bustle to run their business, issue treatment, read radiographs, and more.
    • Pearl is best known for being able to look at dental radiography of various types and identify disease, existing restorations, and natural anatomy at levels that are both extremely accurate and consistent. Specifically, Pearl utilizes the first comprehensive AI-power real-time radiologic platform—and they call it “Second Opinion.”
    • Second Opinion is intended to identify areas of interest where disease may exist and point that out to the doctor. The name is very intentional; they’re not looking to take any autonomy away from practitioners. Pearl also offers another tool called “Practice Intelligence.” Practice Intelligence integrates with your current imaging systems and practice management software to offer specific insights about your patient population, help you plan for each day to optimize efficiencies, front office assistance, and more.
    • Pearl’s Second Opinion is also FDA approved. In fact, it’s the first and only chairside FDA-cleared radiologic detection aid. For context, the only other Dental AI that can compete with Pearl is only authorized for patients who are 22 years or older.
    • Ophir’s story actually comes full circle: his father was a dentist. Naturally, then, he grew up in a dental office environment. But Ophir decided not to go into dentistry. He pursued engineering and computer science.
    • Ophir made a passion for being a serial entrepreneur and while he’s started up a number of companies, the common thread has always been their relation to AI.
    • Thus, Ophir has been focused on computer vision AI for at least 17 years. His career has consisted of applying this technology to different areas in ways that can generate better real-world outcomes.
    • Ophir saw the opportunity to continue to apply this technology across a wide spectrum of categories. He launched some other divisions, one being a healthcare-oriented effort.
    • That healthcare-oriented effort goes all the way back to 2015, and Ophir decided to settle on dental for a variety of reasons. His reasoning went beyond having previous exposure to the dental industry;
    • As the years went on, Ophir and his team at Peal did lots of research and saw a chance to make a big impact on humanity—larger than his current company was making.
    • His current company was mostly in the media space, and he had been running it for 11 and a half years, but he felt his calling and stepped down as CEO. Thus, in 2019, he became the man-in-charge at Pearl.
    • Ophir hasn’t looked back since; Pearl is his favorite company he’s ever run. He credits his fondness for Pearl to the impact he sees their technology making on a daily basis to help patients get the care they need, as well as help, improve the practitioner experience.
    • Learn about:
    • How does Pearl unburden the practitioner so they can perform dentistry at an elevated standard of care?
    • What makes Pearl different from the other Dental AI companies?

Learn Orthodontics by Treating Patients Jun 20, 2022

    SHOW NOTES:

    • This week, Dr. Glenn Vo was pumped to chat with the mastermind behind the Othordontic Teaching Institute: Dr. Jeffery Gerhardt.
    • People always tell dentists to stay in their lane whether it’s about wisdom teeth, endodontics, or Ortho. Jeffery is the opposite, as he’s passionate about helping GPs add Ortho to their businesses—in fact, Jeffery has helped over 300 dentists (and counting) to learn and implement Ortho—and he has good reason for not slowing down anytime soon.
    • After he graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1988 with a degree in business management, Jeffery decided he wanted to pivot his career. So, in 1992, he graduated from the Texas Health Science Center Dental Branch in San Antonio, Texas.
    • When he was in dental school, Jeffery realized they didn’t teach much about Ortho and, when they did, they made it more complicated than it needed to be. And while Jeffery knows that teaching Ortho requires a lot of learning, he believes it’s actually very easy to do—not to mention what it can do for your practice.
    • Jeffery started his Ortho career from 1996 to 1998 after taking a two-year course in Dallas, TX. And, for the last twenty years, he was an Orthodontics instructor for the Academy of GP Orthodontics. While he had a blast there and loved the folks he surrounded himself with, he was irked by the fact that the group didn’t want to modernize.
    • In fact, Dr. Gerhardt is a Diplomat of the Academy of GP Orthodontics—which is its highest recognition.
    • The latest and greatest technologies make the learning process so much easier, and one of the best ways for any dentist to learn—Ortho or not—is through hands-on learning. Think about it: when you were in dental school, learning about how to do a filling, they didn’t just show you pictures before sending you on your way.
    • That’s why Jeffery teaches in a hands-on way during his 10-session course, where you practice by treating patients rather than learning by working on models or watching videos. You’ll learn how to competently treat Orthodontic cases of varying difficulties, from minor tooth alignments, and mixed dentition, to extraction cases.
    • Even better, you don't have to wait until you complete the course to start cases in your own practice -- your instructor provides complimentary mentoring on the cases you start in your practice during the course.
    • In fact, Jeffery and his colleagues over at OTI encourage you to bring patient records to Friday sessions for mentoring. But, that said, they’ll be providing the patients for you—it’s not up to you to find patients for honing your Ortho craft.
    • Learn about:
    • How can you dramatically transform your practice by enrolling in OTI’s 10-session course using self-ligating brackets?
    • How can you easily recover the course tuition just by completing just three or four Orthodontic cases in your own practice?
    • How can you add $15,000+ to your monthly production by starting just 3 Orthodontic cases a month?
    • What percent of Ortho cases can somebody expect after taking Jeffery’s course? What kind of cases make up the majority of Ortho cases?
    • How does OTI provide patients for you to hone your Ortho craft? How do they ensure that every patient is starting at the same time vs. having patients who are in different stages of ortho treatment?
    • How is there ongoing support for those who finish the course? How does Jeffery still help his graduated students to implement Ortho?
    • How much Ortho does Jeffery himself perform from day to day? How does he usually go about the process, increase efficiencies, etc.?
    • And more!
