Interview With The "The Only Girl In The Orchestra" Director Molly O'Brien Feb 13, 2025
    Show notes

"The Only Girl In The Orchestra" is a short documentary film directed by Molly O'Brien that had its world premiere at DOC NYC in SHORTS: SHE STORIES section and was released globally on Netflix before the end of the year. The film follows Molly's aunt, Orin O'Brien, a trailblazing double bassist who became the New York Philharmonic's first female musician in 1966, hired by Leonard Bernstein. Now 87 and recently retired, she reflects on her remarkable career, valuing a quiet, supportive role for loved ones and students. O'Brien was kind enough to spend some time speaking with us about her work on the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now available to stream on Netflix and is up for your consideration for this year's Academy Awards for Best Documentary Short Film. Thank you, and enjoy!

With the release of "Conclave," Ralph Fiennes is finally an Oscar nominee once again after nearly thirty years since his last nomination for Anthony Minghella's 1996 film "The English Patient." The epic romance WWII drama went on to win a leading 9 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and was a critical and box office success. Starring Fiennes, Juliette Binoche, Willem Dafoe, Kristin Scott Thomas, Naveen Andrews, Colin Firth, Julian Wadham, and Jürgen Prochnowwe, the film has had a bit of a divisive reaction as the years have gone on. What did we think of it upon this latest rewatch? Please tune in this Valentine's Day as Josh Parham, Dan Bayer, and I discuss the direction, writing, performances, craftsmanship, its awards season run, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you for all your support, and enjoy!

Interview With The "Better Man" Visual Effects Team Feb 12, 2025
    Show notes

"Better Man" had its world premiere at the 2024 Telluride Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for its elaborately staged and choreographed musical sequences from director Michael Gracey ("The Greatest Showman") and the raw honesty with which global pop star Robbie Williams allowed his story to be told (all the while being portrayed on-screen by a CGI monkey). The Oscar-nominated Visual Effects team consisting of Luke Millar, David Clayton, Keith Herft, and Peter Stubbsugh were all kind enough to spend some time speaking with us about their work on the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now playing in theaters from Paramount Pictures and is up for your consideration for this year's Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects. Thank you, and enjoy!

    "Love Hurts" Feb 08, 2025
    Show notes

For this week's main podcast review, Ema Sasic, Josh Parham, Dan Bayer, Cody Dericks, and I are here to discuss and review "Love Hurts" starring Ke Huy Quan, Ariana DeBose, Daniel Wu, Marshawn Lynch, Mustafa Shakir, Lio Tipton, Rhys Darby, André Eriksen & Sean Astin. Coming off both of their Oscar wins, Quan and DeBose lead this romantic action comedy from 87North Productions with very mixed (if we're being generous) to disastrous (if we're being sincere) results. Is the silly fun entertaining enough to give this a pass, or are we breaking up with this Valentine's Day film? Please tune in as we discuss the acting, writing, direction, action, humor, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you for listening, and enjoy!
