Show notes

The Next Best Picture Podcast is back with a recap of the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. It was a highly unique year as we got to experience the festival from our homes virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic but the quality of films and the sense of discovery one has at the famous indie film festival was still there. Joining me for this recap, I have assembled a great group of people including our own Cody Dericks and guests Murtada Elffadl from the podcast Sundays With Cate, Morgan Roberts from In Their Own League, Zachary Pope form Zach Pope's Reviews and Erik Anderson from Awards Watch. What were some of the highlights and disappointments for us? Tune in below to find out.

Show notes

THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL EPISODE. Please check out the full episode on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture

As we begin a new year, there may not be any sign of an actual date for the Tony Awards or a timeframe for the return of live theater, but with a new administration and the continued rollout of the vaccine, it feels like a new world anyway. With that in mind, the Next Best Theater team decided to take a look at the under-utilized form of musical storytelling, the song cycle, in the form of Jason Robert Brown's "Songs For A New World." Join Nicole Ackman, Casey Lee Clark, Cody Dericks, and myself as we journey through the sixteen "moments" of the first produced work of one of the great contemporary musical theater composer-lyricists.

A Behind The Scenes Look At "Mank" Jan 26, 2021

Show notes

"Mank" is one of 2020's most technically dazzling films. David Fincher's perfectionism transported us back to the Golden Age of Hollywood to tell us the story of Academy Award winning screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz (played by Gary Oldman) and the film has been hailed as one of the year's best, most recently being rewarded as one of the Top 10 films of the year by the American Film Institute (AFI). Many members from the film's production were kind enough to give us a behind-the-scenes look into the making of the film including Academy Award-nominated sound designer Ren Klyce, Costume Designer Trish Summerville & Co-Producer/VFX Producer, Peter Mavromates. Take a listen down below and enjoy!

Interview With "Da 5 Bloods" Star, Delroy Lindo Jan 22, 2021

Show notes

Spike Lee's "Da 5 Bloods" was released earlier this summer on Netflix to acclaim from critics and then shortly afterward, it only grew in public consciousness due to the lasting power of the film's story, the summer's Black Lives Matter movement and the tragic death of one of the film's stars, Chadwick Boseman. Delroy Lindo, the film's lead, has had a career that has lasted for nearly fifty years and he received the highest reviews of his career for his tormented portrayal of the Donald Trump supporting, PTSD suffering, Vietnam war veteran, Paul. Delroy was kind enough to take a few moments to talk about the recognition he has received so far for the film, his experience reuniting with director Spike Lee, working with Chadwick Boseman in a scene that has taken on new meaning since the actor's untimely death and more! Take a listen down below and enjoy!

Interviews With "The Trial Of The Chicago 7" Director/Writer, Aaron Sorkin & Actor, Frank Langella Jan 21, 2021

Show notes

"The Trial Of The Chicago 7" is one of the best films of 2020 and one of its most timely as well. Writer/Director Aaron Sorkin ("Molly's Game" & "The Social Network") could have never predicted just how timely the movie would be when it premiered on Netflix this past September. Not only was he kind enough to spend some time talking to me about the making of his second directorial achievement but one of the stars from the acclaimed ensemble cast, Academy Award -nominated actor, Frank Langella ("Frost/Nixon"), spoke with Dan Bayer about his involvement in the picture as well. Take a listen to both of them down below and enjoy!

Interviews With "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" Director, Cinematographer & Makeup & Hairstyling Team Jan 20, 2021

Show notes

"Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" is one of the year's very best films. A lot of that has to do with the source material by August Wilson and the performances from Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Boseman. But a lot of what makes the film work are the crafts behind-the-scenes. Director George C. Wolfe was kind enough to spend some time speaking with Daniel Howat about what it took to bring the play to life on the screen. Also, Will Mavity got a chance to interview cinematographer Tobias Schliessler and the Makeup Department head, Matiki Anoff, the Hair Department head, Mia Neal and the personal makeup artist for Viola Davis, Sergio Lopez-Rivera. We hope you enjoy this inside look at "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom."
