Interview With "The Hand Of God" Director/Writer, Paolo Sorrentino & Star, Filippo Scotti Dec 13, 2021

Show notes

"The Hand Of God" premiered earlier this year at the Venice International Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize, and its breakout star, Filippo Scotti, won the Marcello Mastroianni Award. Based on the early life of its writer and director, Paolo Sorrentino, the film is a personal re-telling of growing up in Italy, with beautiful cinematography and naturalistic performances, especially from Scotti in his on-screen debut. The film has been chosen as the Italian submission for Best International Feature at this year's Academy Awards and has received Golden Globe and Critics Choice nominations for Best Foreign Language Film. Paolo and Filippo were kind enough to spend some time talking with us about their work on the film, which you can listen to down below. The film is now playing in limited release and will be available to stream on Netflix on December 15th. Enjoy!

"West Side Story" Dec 11, 2021

Show notes

This week, Josh Parham, Dan Bayer, Eve O'Dea, Cody Dericks & Daniel Howat joined our main podcast review to discuss Steven Spielberg's "West Side Story," starring Rachel Zegler, Ansel Elgort, Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist & Rita Moreno. Based on the 1957 stage musical of the same name, which was later made into a Best Picture Oscar-winning film, the film has been adapted by Tony Kushner and injected with a 2021 sensibility for its storytelling and marking the first time Steven Spielberg has ever directed a movie musical. There's so much to discuss from the acting by the ensemble, the musical numbers, the craftsmanship Spielberg and his team bring to it, how it compares to the 1961 film, its awards season prospects, and more! We certainly have a lot of opinions to share. Please take a listen down below and enjoy!

Interviews With "Red Rocket" Writer/Director, Sean Baker & Stars, Bree Elrod & Suzanna Son Dec 10, 2021

Show notes

"Red Rocket" premiered at this year's Cannes Film Festival and went on to screen at the Telluride and New York Film Festivals before opening in limited release this weekend. Writer/Director Sean Baker is following up his previous film, the acclaimed "The Florida Project," with an outrageous, vivid, and particular character study. With a career-best performance from Simon Rex, a powerhouse turn from Bree Elrod, and a star-making debut from Suzanna Son, the film has garnered similar acclaim from critics but has also drawn some controversy due to its lead character's perverted and warped mindset, the relationship he starts with an underage teenager and the film's sexual content. Sean, Bree, and Suzanna were all kind enough to spend some time talking about their work on the film, how it's been received so far, what they're planning to do next, and more. Please take a listen down below and enjoy!

"Twilight: Breaking Dawn - Part 2" Audio Commentary Track Dec 09, 2021

Show notes

THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL TRACK. Please check out the full commentary track on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture

Our "Twilight" marathon (finally) ends with the fifth installment in the franchise, "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2," once again, directed by Bill Condon. With the release of "Spencer," we went back to visit the film franchise that made Kristen Stewart a star along with her co-star Robert Pattinson. This was our fifth and final film in our marathon viewing from a few days ago, and you can tell we were drained and absolutely done with this franchise. A surprising third act brought us back to life, but not in the way we expected this mega-franchise would conclude. Take a listen one last time to hear our thoughts as we watch it for the first time, not knowing where any of it is going! We've already posted our commentary tracks for the first, second, third, and fourth films, which you can listen to as a preview on the site or entirely through our Patreon. Joining me once again are Nicole Ackman, Dan Bayer, guest Charlie Bright and popping in towards the end is a returning Eve O'Dea. So, our dear friends, grab yourself a cup of blood, fire up that Netflix account, and listen alongside us as we conclude our journey with Bella, Edward, and Jacob. Thank you to everyone who went on the journey with us!

Interviews With "Wolf" Director/Writer, Nathalie Biancheri & Star, George MacKay Dec 08, 2021

Show notes

"Wolf" is the feature directorial debut of Nathalie Biancheri, and with her first film, she wanted to explore a topic which hasn't been shown much in cinema or even widely discussed in the world quite frankly, and that is pieces dysphoria, which is the experience believing one's body is that of the wrong species. The film is currently playing in theaters from Focus Features and contains another impressive and physically transformative performance from "1917" star George MacKay. Both Natalie and George were kind enough to spend time talking about their work on the film with me, which you can listen to down below. Enjoy!

Interview With "Flee" Director/Writer, Jonas Poher Rasmussen Dec 07, 2021

Show notes

"Flee" had its world premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival and has been one of the films to most consistently play at various film festivals throughout the year, including Telluride, Toronto, and New York. A recent winner of the Gotham Award for Best Documentary Feature, the film is now finally playing in theaters for the world to see from NEON. And when the world does see it, we think they're going to be entirely captivated by the story of Afghanistan refugee Amin Nawabi, told through the style of animation by filmmaker Jonas Poher Rasmussen. Jonas was kind enough to spend some time talking about his successful award-winning documentary with me, which you can listen to down below. An Oscar contender for Best Documentary and Animated Feature, the film has also been selected as the Danish entry for Best International Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards. Be sure to check this one out for what is truly not just one of the best animated, documentary, and international films of the year but one of the best films of the year. Period.

Under the careful direction of Jane Campion, the film has spawned a ton of conversation since its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival for its themes, acting, and craftsmanship. We were very fortunate to get the opportunity to interview a few people involved with the making of the film, including cinematographer Ari Wegner, editor Peter Sciberras and actor Jesse Plemons who plays George Burbank. Please take a listen down below but be sure to watch the film first on Netflix before listening as we discuss spoilers in our conversations. Thank you and enjoy!
