"Nightmare Alley" Dec 21, 2021

Show notes

For our second review this week, Nicole Ackman, Dan Bayer, Ema Sasic, Zoe Rose Bryant & Casey Lee Clark joined me to discuss the newest film from Academy Award-winner Guillermo del Toro, "Nightmare Alley," starring Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Toni Collette & Richard Jenkins. Adapted from the 1946 novel of the same name, the film is a dark modern-day noir with incredible craftsmanship and much to explore in the way of characters and themes. What did we think of the story, the crafts, the performances, and how do we feel about its awards prospects, especially following del Toro's success with "The Shape Of Water?" We discuss all of these points and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review, which you can listen to down below. Enjoy!

"Spider-Man: No Way Home" Dec 18, 2021

Show notes

This week, Cody Dericks & Danilo Castro joined our main podcast review to discuss the third installment in Jon Watts' stand-alone Spider-Man trilogy between Sony and Marvel with "Spider-Man: No Way Home" starring Tom Holland, Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina & Jamie Foxx. It's an ambitious film, even for Marvel, as it attempts to wrap up several storylines, introduce a few surprises and provide emotional closure for the character of Peter Parker. What did we think of the storyline, the multiple villains, the visual effects, performances, and more? We discuss all of these points in our NON-SPOILER review and then dive into spoilers towards the end. But let's face it, you're all going to see this at some point or another, right? Please take a listen down below and enjoy!

Interview With "Swan Song" Director/Writer, Benjamin Cleary Dec 17, 2021

Show notes

"Swan Song" (not to be confused with the indie film starring Udo Kier released earlier this year) is the first narrative feature from Oscar-winning director Benjamin Cleary (Best Live Action Short for "Stutterer") and also the first leading role for the film's star, 2-time Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali. The film is a thinking person's sci-fi with an emotional core allowing for some deep questions on mortality. Benjamin was kind enough to sit with me after the film's world premiere at the AFI Film Festival and discuss his ideas behind the film, the collaborations with the actors and craft departments, what he has coming up next, and more! Be sure to check out the film now streaming on Apple TV+ and enjoy!

"The Matrix" Dec 16, 2021

Show notes

THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture

It cannot be overstated just how groundbreaking Lana and Lilly Wachowski's 1999 sci-fi action masterpiece "The Matrix" was at the time of its release and how influential it has been in the years since. Its popularity has spurred multiple sequels (including a new one next week), spin-offs, and imitators across the film industry who tried to replicate the lightning in a bottle the sisters caught. Starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving, and Joe Pantoliano in iconic roles, the film either turned them into household names or cemented their reputations. Twenty-two years later, we decided to go back to the Matrix and discuss the first film's themes, action scenes, characters, visual effects (including the legendary use of "bullet-time"), its awards run, and more! Joining me for this throwback podcast review, I have Josh Parham, Lauren LaMagna & Dan Bayer. Take that red pill, plug yourself back in and enjoy!

Interview With "Being The Ricardos" Director/Writer, Aaron Sorkin Dec 15, 2021

Show notes

"Being The Ricardos" is the third feature film directed by Academy Award-winning writer Aaron Sorkin after "Molly's Game" and "The Trial Of The Chicago 7." The film has garnered praise for its performances from Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem, who both received Golden Globe nominations for their work recently, while Sorkin received Critics Choice and Golden Globe nominations for his screenplay. Despite this, the film and Sorkin have faced scrutiny over the casting of Kidman and particularly Bardem as the iconic duo of Lucile Ball and Desi Arnaz. Making his second appearance on the show two years in a row, Sorkin addressed this criticism again, spoke about his initial ideas behind the project, what he's learned as a director, working with the actors, and more. Please take a listen down below and enjoy!

Interviews With "Encounter" Star, Riz Ahmed & Sound Supervisor, Andrew Stirk Dec 14, 2021

Show notes

"Encounter" premiered earlier this year at the Telluride Film Festival, where its leading star, Academy Award-nominee Riz Ahmed, received a special tribute. The film went on to play at the Toronto International Film Festival and is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Many have praised the work of Ahmed as a veteran looking to save his sons from an unknown threat, but another element that has been called out is the sound work. Ahmed and supervising Sound Editor Andrew Stirk were kind enough to speak with us about their work on the film, which you can listen to down below. Thank you and enjoy!
