    Show notes

If you ask most people which television series from 2022 was the breakout new show of the year, they will probably say Dan Erickson's "Severance." Sean one premiered on AppleTV+ on February 18th with the week-to-week episodes directed by Ben Stiller and Aoife McArdle. It received critical acclaim for its writing, performances by the ensemble, and immersion into its world and concept. Many talented people worked on this show to bring it to life, and we're proud to showcase their work in this series of podcast interviews. For your consideration this Emmy season, we have Composer Theodore Shapiro, Production Designers Jeremy Hindle, Nick Francone & Cinematographer Jessica Lee Gagné, all of whom helped to make the show as memorable as it's been. We hope you enjoy these interviews in our special behind-the-scenes look at one of 2022's best shows. Thank you!

Our 2012 retrospective continues with Quentin Tarantino's Oscar-winning film "Django Unchained" starring Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington & Samuel L. Jackson. Please tune in below as we discuss Tarantino's writing, directing, the performances, the crafts, and how we feel about its Oscar wins all of these years later. It's a lively discussion with a wide range of opinions almost as long as the movie itself. Joining me for this review, I have Josh Parham, Dan Bayer, Danilo Castro & guest Ryan McQuade. You can also check out all of our previous 2012 retrospective reviews for "Zero Dark Thirty," "Skyfall," "Amour," "Beasts Of The Southern Wild" & "Les Misérables" if you have not done so already. Interview With "Cha Cha Real Smooth" Actor/Writer/Director/Producer, Cooper Raiff Jun 22, 2022
    Show notes

"Cha Cha Real Smooth" premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, where it received a warm reception and was later picked up by Apple. It is now streaming on AppleTV+ where thousands of people are getting the opportunity to see the acclaimed follow-up film from Cooper Raiff, co-starring Dakota Johnson in what many are calling her best performance to date. Like his directorial debut "Shithouse," Cooper Raiff wrote, directed, acted, and produced the film, imbuing it with his own style and voice, which is clearly speaking to many people. Cooper was kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with us about the film from multiple sides of production. We hope you enjoy the conversation. Thank you!

Interview With "Lightyear" Director/Writer Angus MacLane & Producer Galyn Susman Jun 20, 2022
    Show notes

"Lightyear" is a story taking place within the "Toy Story" universe as the movie a five-year-old Andy saw in the movie theater that made him want to own a Buzz Lightyear toy. With Chris Evans stepping in to voice the iconic character and a new team of animators at Pixar using the latest technology, the film combines action, comedy, and heart to provide a sci-fi adventure the likes of which the animation studio hasn't given us before. Director and writer Angus MacLane and producer Galyn Susman were kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with us about their work on the film, which you can listen to down below, or you can subscribe to the show on your favorite podcast app using the links provided. We hope you enjoy the conversation. Thank you!

    "Lightyear" Jun 18, 2022
    Show notes

For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Ema Sasic & Dan Bayer. Together, we're reviewing the latest film from Disney Pixar, "Lightyear," Chris Evans, Keke Palmer, Peter Sohn, James Brolin & Taika Waititi. Based on the movie the character Andy saw in 1995, which inspired him to want a Buzz Lightyear action figure (we know, we know), the film is Pixar's first foray into the world of science-fiction as Buzz goes on an adventure that will take him to infinity and beyond. What did we think of the story, the characters, the humor, and the action? Find out in our review down below. Please take a listen and enjoy! Thank you!

Interview With "Good Luck To You, Leo Grande" Screenwriter Katy Brand Jun 17, 2022
    Show notes

"Good Luck To You, Leo Grande" premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival and was later picked up by Searchlight Pictures, who released it this weekend on Hulu. The film stars Emma Thompson in one of her best roles to date as Nancy, a middle-aged retired woman looking for good sex at this point in her life, and Daryl McCormack in a breakout turn as her hired young sex-worker, Leo Grande. Both of them deliver terrific performances and are aided by the thoughtful writing from screenwriter Katy Brand. The sex-positive story carefully outlines both characters with a high level of detail, providing an insightful analysis of sex and the relationship the two share with one another. Katy was kind enough to talk with us about her screenplay, the characters, the hotel setting they share, and more. Please be sure to check out the film, now streaming on Hulu, and have a listen down below and enjoy. Thank you!

    "Les Misérables" Jun 16, 2022
    Show notes

THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture

Our 2012 retrospective continues with director Tom Hooper's follow-up to his Oscar Best Picture-winning film "The King Speech" with "Les Misérables" starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen, Samantha Barks, Aaron Tveit, and Daniel Huttlestone. A major Oscar contender on paper due to the musical's pedigree in the world of Broadway, the film achieved financial success at the box office while critical reception was more mixed. What do we think of it ten years later? How do we feel about the performances (singing ad acting), the cinematography, production design, the adaptation from stage to film, and its awards season run? Tune in below as the Next Best Theatre team, Nicole Ackman, Dan Bayer, Lauren LaMagna, Cody Dericks, and I discuss all of these topics and more in our review below. You can also check out all of our previous 2012 retrospective reviews for "Zero Dark Thirty," "Skyfall," "Amour" & "Beasts Of The Southern Wild" if you have not done so already. Thank you. We hope you enjoy it!
