The 95th Academy Awards is in the history books! And what a historic night it was. We saw moving speeches, some shocking wins, a smooth ceremony for a change that respected the nominees and celebrated the art of filmmaking, and memories that will last a lifetime. Alyssa Christian, Giovanni Lago, Eve O'Dea, Daniel Howat, Meredith Loftus, and Will Mavity all joined me to discuss the winners, their speeches, and what we thought of the show overall minutes after it went off the air. We also go over the musical numbers, Jimmy Kimmel's hosting performance, and answer some of your fan-submitted questions at the end. Please take a listen down below, and a tremendous shoutout to everyone in the NBP Film Community who has supported us through another awards season. Thank you, and enjoy!

Interview With "Creed III" Cinematographer, Kramer Morgenthau Mar 12, 2023

Show notes

"Creed III" recently opened in theaters to the franchise's best box office opening and is continuing the "Creed" franchise in new and unexpected ways. One of those fresh approaches was through the film's cinematography. Michael B. Jordan, in his directorial debut, brought on "Creed II" director of photography Kramer Morgenthau to execute his vision for the third and most ambitious film in the franchise yet. That ambition came from the decision to shoot the boxing scenes using IMAX cameras, a first for any sports film, and depict the action in a style that resembled anime. Kramer was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about his work on the film, which you can listen to down below. Thank you, and enjoy!

"Aftersun" Mar 09, 2023

Show notes

THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture

"Aftersun" had its world premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. The directorial debut of Charlotte Wells flew under the radar until many eventually saw it, declaring it the best film of the festival. With A24 distributing and "Moonlight's" Barry Jenkins and Adele Romanski producing, the tiny independent film took awards season by storm, winning nearly every breakthrough/first-time director prize and more. With "Normal People" star Paul Mescal receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, we decided days before the ceremony to go back and review this film which we missed during its initial theatrical release. Lauren LaMagna & Giovanni Lago joined me to discuss the film's themes, filmmaking, the chemistry between Mescal and Frankie Corio, how we personally connected with it, and more. Please take a listen down below and enjoy! Thank you!

Our Immediate Reactions To The 2023 Spirit Awards With The NBP Film Community Mar 05, 2023

Show notes

The 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards were held last night, representing the best in independent film for 2022. After the show, I hopped on a Zoom call with Jonathan Fuji, aka. "The Film Drunk," Zoe Rose Bryant (who joins later) and, as per tradition, the NBP Film Community right after the show to talk about the winners and our thoughts on what any of this means for the Oscar race while voting is still going on. Since Film Independent is an organization anyone can join, it makes sense to celebrate this evening with the community, some of whom are voters themselves! Tune in below to listen and enjoy! Thank you!
