"The Creator" Sep 30, 2023

Show notes

For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Ema Sasic, Daniel Howat, Isaiah Washington & Will Mavity to discuss the latest film from Gareth Edwards, "The Creator" starring John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Sturgill Simpson, Allison Janney & Madeleine Yuna Voyles. An original sci-fi film made for under $100 million but made to look like it cost a lot more, Edwards and his team have created a film that's turning quite a few heads within the industry, but for all of its fascinating behind-the-scenes production stories, what did we think of the final result? Tune in as we discuss the story, performances, editing, cinematography, sound, visual effects work, and more in our review. Thank you, and enjoy!

Interview With "Fair Play" Director/Writer Chloe Domont Sep 29, 2023

Show notes

"Fair Play" had its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, where it received strong reviews for its two lead performances from Phoebe Dynevor and Alden Ehrenreich and Chloe Domont's direction and writing. The film makes the feature directorial debut for Domont, who is no stranger to being behind the camera as she's taken all her experience working in short films and television to this steaming pressure cooker of a film. Domont was kind enough to spend a few minutes speaking with us about where the idea for the film came from, working with the actors, how to chart the course of tension, and more. Please take a listen and be sure to check out the film, which is now playing in limited release and will be available to stream on Netflix on October 6th. Thank you, and enjoy!

"Gangs Of New York" Sep 28, 2023

Show notes

THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture

For this month's second throwback podcast review, I was joined by Lauren LaMagna, Danilo Castro, and Isaiah Washington to discuss the first collaboration between Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese and Academy Award-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio in "Gangs Of New York" to help us get ready for the release of their latest piece of work together in "Killers Of The Flower Moon." Starring an all-star cast with DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, Cameron Diaz, Jim Broadbent, John C. Reilly, Brendan Gleeson, Henry Thomas & Liam Neeson, production delays plagued Scorsese passion project, including clashes with the studio. It all led to a finished product that was high on ambition but messy in its execution. There are many bright spots to be found, including Daniel Day-Lewis' iconic performance as Bill The Butcher, the staggering production design, and the story's themes. What do we think of it, though, over two decades later? Tune in as we discuss these elements, the screenplay, DiCaprio's performance, his chemistry with Cameron Diaz, the film's awards season run, and more. Thank you, and enjoy!

"Cassandro" had its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for Gael García Bernal's lead performance. Academy Award-winning documentarian director Roger Ross Williams ("Life Animated") made his narrative feature debut with this film and also received warm notices for his direction of an openly gay wrestler in the world of Lucha Libre wrestling. Ross Williams was kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with us about his work on the film, moving from making shorts and documentaries into narrative features, collaborating with García Bernal and global superstar Bad Bunny, and more. Please take a listen and be sure to check out the film, which is now available to stream on Prime Video. Thank you, and enjoy!

"Mean Streets" Sep 21, 2023

Show notes

THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture

For this month's first throwback podcast review, I was joined by Giovanni Lago, Danilo Castro, and guest Larry Fried to discuss the first collaboration between Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese and Academy Award-winning actor Robert De Niro in "Mean Streets" to help us get ready for the release of their latest piece of work together in "Killers Of The Flower Moon." Shot on a small budget with very few resources, the movie may not have been the official feature directorial debut for Scorsese, but it would be the film that would put him on the map and lay the foundation for much of the greatness that would come after for both him and De Niro. Also starring Harvey Keitel in one of his best roles, David Proval, Amy Robinson, Victor Argo, Richard Romanus & David Carradine, the film is very much a snapshot of 1970s style filmmaking as much as it is a personal look at small-time crime in the streets of Little Italy New York from Scorsese's perspective. What did we think of it fifty years later? Tune in as we discuss the story, the performances, the themes, and scrappy filmmaking, which led to some innovative choices that helped give the film its original identity at the time of its release and more in our review. Thank you, and enjoy!
