"Safe" Nov 30, 2023

Show notes

For this month's second throwback podcast review, I am joined by Nadia Dalimonte and Dan Bayer to discuss Todd Haynes' first collaboration with Academy Award-winner Julianne Moore, "Safe" (1995), also starring Peter Friedman, Xander Berkeley, Susan Norman, Kate McGregor-Stewart & James LeGros. Steeped in ambiguity with many interpretations, the film has inspired a tremendous amount of discussion over the years and has endured as one of the best films of the '90s despite its modest release, which saw it gain very little awards recognition or box office success. What do we think of it nearly thirty years later as we get ready for Haynes' latest film with Moore, "May December?" Tune in as we discuss Moore's performances, the film's themes, the cinematography, the score, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you, and enjoy!

A Behind The Scenes Look At "John Wick: Chapter 4" Nov 29, 2023

Show notes

"John Wick: Chapter 4" is the culmination of years of hard work, creative ambition, and four exhilarating films that gave audiences an iconic new action movie character worth rooting for. The fourth installment of the franchise, started by director Chad Stahelski and star Keanu Reeves in 2014, has gone on to achieve the highest critical and financial success for the franchise, leaving audiences clamoring for more as the talents behind the scenes pushed the action film genre to new heights they had never seen before. Director Chad Stahelski, cinematographer Dan Laustsen, and supervising sound editor Mark Stoeckinger were all kind enough to lend their insight into the making of such a beloved and challenging technical film where the stunts, camera work, and sound are all operating at the highest level. It's literally one of the finest action films ever crafted and is even making a case for why stunts should finally be honored at the Oscars. Please take a moment to listen to these interviews and check out the film, which is up for your consideration in all eligible categories for this year's Academy Awards. Thank you, and enjoy!

Interview With "Silent Night" Star Joel Kinnaman Nov 28, 2023

Show notes

Joel Kinnaman is no stranger to the action film genre. After starring in large films such as the 2014 "Robocop," both "Suicide Squad" and "The Suicide Squad" and the television series "Altered Carbon," he may have found his most physically and emotionally demanding role to date in legendary director John Woo's newest film "Silent Night." Having to play the role of a father who goes on a quest for revenge over the holidays with no lines of dialogue, the film relies on Kinnaman's physical performance to drive most of the story. Joel was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about his work on the film, which will be released in theaters from Lionsgate on December 1st. Please be sure to check out the film and take a listen below. Thank you, and enjoy!

"Napoleon" Nov 22, 2023

Show notes

For this week's second podcast review, I am joined by Dan Bayer & Tom O'Brien. Today, we are reviewing the newest film from director Ridley Scott, "Napoleon," starring Joaquin Phoenix, Vanessa Kirby, and Tahar Rahim. Based on the rise and fall of Napoleon Bonaparte, the historical epic contains large battle scenes, petulant behavior, coup d'états, marital drama, and enough Joaquin Phoenix memes to last us a lifetime. The film is an odd mixture of tones, creative ambition, and misfires. What did we ultimately think of it, though? Tune in as we discuss Scott's direction, David Scrape's screenplay, the performances from Phoenix and Kirby, the drama, the action, the comedy(?!), its awards season potential, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Destiny has brought us this podcast; to that, we say thank you and enjoy!
