The Modern High Performer | corporate leaders, modern professional, work-life balance, career fulfillment, work culture, executive coaching, career clarity, career development

Doing meaningful work shouldn’t cost you everything else.

Welcome to The Modern High Performer — the podcast for ambitious professionals who want to do meaningful work and have energy left for the people and priorities that matter most.

I’m Molly Asplin, founder and CEO of The Modern High Performance Group. With my experience in corporate finance and years coaching high-achieving men and women, I’ve seen how easy it is to get stuck in autopilot — chasing success but feeling misaligned, burnt out, or depleted for the people who matter most.

I see a workplace culture that’s become noisy, reactive, and draining — full of people who aren’t burnt out enough to stop, but not energized enough to thrive. It’s the quiet crisis of modern work. And it’s time for a better way. We deserve environments where focus is protected, people are valued, and leaders care about the humans behind the output. That’s the shift I’m here to help create. This show is about changing that.
Every week, we’ll talk about what it really means to thrive in today’s work environment. I’ll share practical strategies, honest stories, and fresh leadership insights to help you grow your career without sacrificing your life outside of it.

Whether you’re navigating a big pivot, leading a team, or simply trying to manage the mental load of work and home, you’ll find encouragement, clarity, and new ways to think about high performance in a sustainable way.

Let’s lead differently. Let’s work better. Let’s live more fully.

    Episode 78: 4 Components of WINNING Dec 06, 2022
    Show notes

    Warning: Fired Up Episode!!!

In this episode, I break down 4 Components of Winning that I learned from a book I recently finished by Tim Grover called "WINNING" -- it is an EXCELLENT read. I have linked it here for you!

We can prepare, plan, organize, create vision boards and map things out, but at some point, you have to take that jump into the unkown, let fear flow thorugh you, and believe with total confidence that you will succeed! If you're worried about the "fear of failure" - you need to move right through it. It's the only way to make progress! There will always be failures (lots of them) on your way to winning.

So many people will say things like "this is my year!", yet they have no real plans or execution suggesting this year will be more successful than the last.

I hope these concepts inspire you as much as they inspired me!

Please take a screenshot and share your biggest takeaway on IG stories. Tag me @molly.asplin so that I can shout you out! Episode 77: Is It Possible To Be Successful In Direct Sales? Nov 26, 2022
    Show notes

"Most people are skeptical of nontraditional careers because society has taught us to look for jobs, not opportunity."

In this episode, I dive into if it's possible to be successful in direct sales in 2022 + 2023.

I break down many of the myths:

"You have to have a big following."

"It's a pyramind scheme." (those are illegal, for the record)

"You have to be salesy & push it on family and friends."

And I also go into the facts:

Direct Selling can offer you infrastructure that other types of businesses cannot - this creates a very low barrier to entry/low risk to start

Direct Selling can meet the needs of a lot of different individuals and circumstances.

And what has been especially true for me -- a direct sales business will help you learn many different business skills that will help you in all areas of your life. There really is no better training for someone looking to develop multiple skill sets, such as the following: Time management, Organization, Presentation skills, Speaking skills.

I also break down a few different types of online businesses and pros + cons of each.

I hope you enjoy this episode!

Episode 75: The Integration of Your Dreams, Business, & Motherhood with January Donovan Nov 22, 2022
    Show notes

This is a guest interview with The Woman School Founder, January Donovan. I felt so inspired by this conversation!

January Donovan is the founder of The Woman School and The Wholeness Coaching School. She is a #1 best-selling author, an entrepreneur, and a mother of 8 children.

She has over 20 years of experience training women, and she gives practical mindset and skill training for women you won't get anywhere else. She has built a business while staying in love and prioritizing her 8 children. Yes, 8 children!

January is fierce about integrating business and motherhood. She believes that our professional dreams cannot be apart from our personal dreams; we just need to train up for them. Motherhood is an olympic sport and the gold medal is raising children that will bring good into the world. If we want true success then we have to train ourselves to build businesses that integrate every part of our lives.

Episode 74: Having An Ambition Of Your Own As A SAHM Nov 15, 2022
    Show notes

Calling all SAHM's who feel a tug to pursue an ambition of your own... this episode is for you!

I've worked with many SAHM's in my last 8 years of mentoring high performing women. In this episode, I break down the specific feelings these SAHM's often have: they want to pursue a passion, they love being a SAHM AND they have an ambition of their own they'd like to carry out, they want to create more options for their family and likewise, more financial flexibility as well.

This particular group of SAHM's also has some common fears... "But I always said I solely wanted to be a SAHM... now I feel like that's changing; is that okay?"

And, these particular SAHM's that start something of their own also have specific QUALITIES that make them successful -- listen in to hear what these specific qualities are.

Share this with a SAHM who may resonate!

Episode 73: What About The Risk of INACTION? Nov 03, 2022
    Show notes

Another fired up episode with yours truly :).

Instead of only asking yourself "what happens if I make a career shift?" ALSO ASK "What happens if I DON'T?" Inaction comes at a high price we often overlook.

I got a LOT of great feedback that women were really connecting with Episode 71: Why Women Want To Quit Their Jobs More Than Ever, and this is a subsequent message - maybe an even more important message!

Episode 72: Why "Being Efficient" Can Actually Slow You Down! Nov 01, 2022
    Show notes

Some of us are caught up in a super regimented, robotic way of life, and I actually belive it is hurting many of us.

Yes, habits and routines are AWESOME! Trust me, I live and breathe for habit formation and doing things repeatedly that help improve our lives. AND... you gotta come up for air and see the bigger picture. Otherwise, you live the same day over and over again, with no outlook on where you're headed, and you may not even be enjoying the process OR where it's taking you. What's the point of that?!

I believe in creating more MARGIN in our lives and living in a way that feels good, not allocating every single minute of every day because "that's just how busy I am!" No thanks!

In this episode, I talk through how to work backwards from your bigger picture goal, how to think differently, and what to be cautious of as you begin to make these changes!

Episode 71: Women Want To Quit Their Jobs More Than Ever... Why??? Oct 21, 2022
    Show notes

"Women In Leadership Roles Are More Likely Than Ever To Quit"

"Job Engagement Declines for A Third of Workers"

"Your Female Coworker Probably Wants To Quit"

"Women Are Burned Out And Want To Quit Their Jobs"

These are headlines in recent news articles around women in the workforce. In this episode, I dive into WHY??? Why are women feeling burned out, stressed out, and unfulfilled?

The interesting thing? This isn't just about changing jobs for better pay elsewhere - it's actively wanting to leave careers that don't feel aligned anymore.

In this episode, I share specific reasons this is happening AND a special opportunity for you to make a change in a way that feels good for YOU. A step in the right direction and a positive change when you KNOW there is more for you in life!

Episode 70: Secrets of Success to Perform at Your Highest Level with Alan Stein Jr. Oct 10, 2022
    Show notes

What an honor to interview author & speaker, Alan Stein Jr., about one of my FAVORITE topics -- high performance.

Alan's new book, Sustain Your Game, had a meaningful impact on me when I read it earlier this summer, and I was thrilled to have this conversation with him to really dive in. Applying concepts from this book helped me BREAK MY PLATEAU and unlock the next version of myself. You can grab your copy of the book here.

We discuss the importance of FOUCS in a world that is more distracted than ever, how to overcome stagnation and complacency, the imporantance of being a CONSISTENT leader, and how to pivot and prevail to make a long term, lasting impact in your life.

This conversation is for high performers like me who want to learn practical strategies and action steps to sustain your own game!

Alan believes that each of us will always be under contstruction, a work in progress, and constantly evolving. The goal is to be moving toward our highest potential, toward making a meaningful contribution, and toward becoming the best version of ourselves.

Episode 69: Setting Brave Boundaries for Success with Dr. Sasha Shillcutt Oct 03, 2022
    Show notes

In this episode, I interview Dr. Sasha Shillcutt, and we dive into how to set boundaries and WHY they are so important.

In Dr. Sasha's new book, Brave Boundaries, she discusses how saying YES to every ask, to every need, to every responsibility, and to everyone, caused her to reach her breaking point. Externally, she was successful: An anesthesiologist. Wife. Mother. Tenured professor. Sister. Friend. The "yes woman" to anything and everything. But it wasn't enough; it was never enough.

Exhausted, overcommitted, and empty, she decided, out of necessity, to radically change her approach to everyday life.

We chat about why it can be hard to say No to others (especially as women). We discuss the problem with being the "Yes Mom", and how to set boundaries in both your personal life and your professional life.

I think you'll find this episode very liberating, freeing, and inspiring!
