Be Anxious for Nothing Mar 25, 2024
    Show notes

By, John Feddema Are you anxious, worried about the future, your future? Anxiety is the inevitable unease that gnaws at our confidence, the slow suffocation as we feel strangled by the challenges of life. The men that arrived at the Gatehouse Retreat Center on the Blaylock Ranch in Junction, Texas had anxiety written on their faces. They showed up to the First Responders Legacy Program unsure of what to expect, carrying a ruck sack full of the burdens of life. They arrived in Texas searching for hope and healing. Unfortunately, the unprecedented access to information about current events has failed to provide confidence in the future. In fact, it has had the opposite effect. It has blurred any certainty we thought we might have, like a fog clouding our path forward. According to statistics, nearly 1 in 3 individuals will experience an anxiety disorder in their lifetime and it is estimated that 300 million individuals will be afflicted annually. This is not just a concern about the future but a nervousness that casts a shadow over our hearts and goes beyond our ability to manage. Treatment is inconsistent and the scientific community continues to try and study the underlying neurobiology to search for a solution to the root cause. Is there a solution? They are yet to find one studying the complexity of the brain; however, consider Paul’s letter to the Church at Philippi when he wrote; “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” - Philippians 4:6-7 ‘Be anxious for nothing’. This is easy advice for someone secure in their situation but for anyone who has lived long enough to experience pain, suffering, or disappointment, this is equivalent to telling the trees to stop blowing in the wind. However, before you disregard Paul’s advice, consider his circumstances when he wrote this letter. At the time he composed these words, he was imprisoned in Rome, expecting a trial which might end in his own death. Either way, Rome was not in the habit of letting a prisoner go without first drawing blood. The Church in Philippi was faring considerably better than Paul when he penned this letter and yet, having no ability to control his own fate, he encouraged them to ‘be anxious for nothing’. This advice is not a call to close our eyes to the challenges of reality and endure the blows of life with blind ignorance. We will be challenged and we will face adversity. Paul’s advice: don’t flinch. Don’t run, don’t hide, and don’t ignore the reality of our circumstances. Embrace the hardship and ‘in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God’. To hold back a percent of your anxiety is to hold back a portion of your heart. To allow the burden to remain, allows a shadow to continue to be cast over your heart. When Paul wrote ‘in everything’ he meant it in the greatest sense of the word, all of it. All of the worry that strangles on our hearts, our minds, and our souls. What then does Paul say to do? Pray. Bring it all before the Lord through prayer, supplication, and thanksgiving. If something is great enough to gnaw at our heart, it is great enough to bring to the Lord. To humbly petition the Lord to supply what is needed in our current circumstance. This is not simply the act of closing our eyes and bowing our heads and reciting words from memory. It is not a superficial experience or act. It is a mode of prayer whereby we surrender our hearts and minds, being fully dependent upon God in our current situation. This is the solution. What are we provided? ‘The peace of God which surpasses all comprehension.’ Can you think of anything greater? I would expect that you can’t, considering the verse clearly identifies that we will not be able to comprehend the peace that God...

Christ Has Set Us Free! Mar 20, 2024

By, Rollie Dunnuck This past week at Sky Rose Ranch, CA, twenty-two Veterans came together.  While none of them knew exactly what to expect or what they would get out of the week, they all stepped out in faith and traveled from different parts of country. After a long day of travel the men were met by staff who were excited to show them exactly what the week would entail. It was obvious to the staff that the men had doubt, anxiety, and were lost in their spiritual walk.   After an amazing dinner, the men heard a team leader bare his soul, and show these lost men the only path to resiliency was through a personal relationship with the creator of the universe, Jesus Christ.  The first night most of the men claimed that they were there because they lacked purpose, direction, focus, and faith. Overall what was heard was the echoes of the cries of men separated from a true relationship with God and the hunger that came along with it, reminding me of Matthew 5:6, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.”   Throughout the week the Warriors were shown the strength of the Lord working in men who have submitted and follow Him. They learned how to take every thought captive and make their thoughts obedient to Christ. They learned the difference between religion and relationship. They learned how and where to cast their anxieties, through true biblical replacement therapy: Remove - Philippians 4:6-7, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made know to God.  And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Replace - Philippians 4:8-9, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me- practice these things and the God of peace will be with you.” They were shown some of God’s promises, like restoration, renewal, forgiveness, peace, and joy. They learned about God’s love that is without end like in Roman’s 5:8 “but God shows his love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”  And Romans 8:38-39 “For I am sure that neither death, nor life, not angles or rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us form the love of God in Christ Jesus or Lord.” Through this love, they learned their true identity: heirs in Christ renewed by His sacrifice.     The big take-away for several of the men was relationship VS religion. They learned that the needed to talk with God: Be in Prayer and hear his response and Be in the Word.  They learned that God’s word holds the truth that many of them were missing. There is a guidebook to life, and it’s called the Bible. These men also learned to study it, meditate on it, and use it to guide their life.  They were shown first-hand the reason we have Cornermen, and that they need other Christian men to live a successful Christian life. They were also taught about being in fellowship as part of the body of Christ: Be in Church. With these 4 pillars of communication they left the week recharged and ready to lead their family as the men Christ created them to be - free from the yoke of sin and alive in Christ!  Galatians 5:1 tells us, “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT MIGHTY OAKS AND OUR PROGRAMS CLICK HERE!

Return to Me! Feb 26, 2024
    Show notes

By Glenn Rosenbaum As the first major arctic winter weather storm wreaked havoc over the majority of North America, veterans and first responders from all over the country endured the storms’ travel challenges to make it to the first men’s Recovery Program for 2024 at Junction, Texas. Upon arrival, we could see from the countenance on these men’s faces the years-upon-years of trauma and life challenges that they had endured in the journey of their lives. Their trauma-weathered faces appeared so hardened and cold that one would have the initial fleeting thought that our life changing program may have in fact arrived too late to provide any real life-saving help. Thankfully, the experienced staff and team leaders at our program this week knew that a thought like that is absolutely wrong, and that what these men would be given and taught this week had the power and promise to not only soften countenances like these, but also would launch them into the necessary legacy changing and soul healing these men needed. As our seasoned and trained team leaders engaged these men throughout the week, we could tell that the storms of the enemy had created an opportunity for these men to be tempted and deceived. Regrettably, wrong decisions in each participant’s life were made. Resulting in these men finding themselves lying with the deceitfulness of the world. With those wrong decisions came the contamination of guilt and shame that can bring a man to truly believe that his future is eternally cold, dark, and hopeless. A frozen wasteland so cold that no seeable form of life or relationship could ever exist. In the Old Testament, in the book of Jeremiah, we can read about a group of people in a very similar state known as the nation of Israel. The people of the nation of Israel also struggled with their own story of trauma and contamination. In fact, they found themselves so backslidden and “their land” so profusely polluted with the world’s harlotries and wickedness that their future also appeared similarly eternally cold and dark. Praisefully, just as God sought the national of Israel and would bring them to repentance, God similarly pursued these men at our session. In Jeramiah 3:1 it says: “’But you have played the harlot with many lovers; Yet return to Me,’ says the LORD.” Like Jeremiah to the nation of Israel, our team would go and proclaim similar words and truths towards these hardened warriors. Pleas similar to ones like this: repent and return, “says the LORD; 'I will not cause My anger to fall on you. For I am merciful,' says the LORD; 'I will not remain angry forever.  Only acknowledge your iniquity, that you have transgressed against the LORD your God,’” (Jer 3:12-13). Throughout the week, our servants’ efforts to make these men sensible of their own state and sharing God’s promised seed of hope, God would work his tender mercy in the hearts of these men. God would, one-by-one, bring these men to repentance, and as He promised, he would receive them again into favor.

Dare to Choose Differently Feb 14, 2024

By, Travis Gitthens “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of human freedoms- to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” Viktor Frankl Our participants come labeled with a variety of mental health diagnoses: anxiety disorders, anger disorders, addictions, stress disorders, personality disorders, etc. More times than not, this puts the individual in the mentality that they are somehow subject to something out of their control that they have to manage the rest of their life with medications, a lifetime of therapy, or other coping mechanisms. This results in men feeling defeated, helpless, enslaved to a diagnosis, or worst of all, hiding behind these diagnoses as an excuse for their bad behavior. The very thing Mr. Frankl, warned against. “This is just how I am now. This is my new normal,” they say! “Only if you allow it to be.” We say in response. At Mighty Oaks we believe the Bible is authoritative and sufficient, and it doesn’t just offer a list of good ideas for us to try. It diagnoses the true condition of our nature and offers real solutions. 1 Corinthians 10:13 tells us, “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” This Biblical truth diagnoses the true culprit, my sinful nature, and gives hope of the promise that God won’t allow impossible temptation to overtake us but will provide a way out. The question then becomes, will I take that way of escape, or will I give myself over to my sin? Mr. Frankl and scripture agree that I get to make a choice in how I respond. There is no playing the victim or hiding behind a label. What about anxiety? I personally have struggled with anxiety and was even prescribed medication for it. The medication did nothing to remove the anxiety, it merely tried to numb it away… and took other emotions with it. God’s Word, however, speaks directly to this issue in Philippians 4:6-7. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” It acknowledges that the anxiety is real, gives me an action to take to combat it, and a promise of “peace that passes understanding” to call on. Real action, real hope, real power, and no unpleasant side effects. In Titus 2 the Apostle Paul writes to Titus to encourage men to be “self-controlled and worthy of respect.” It seems obvious, but the Biblical implication is that we can be self-controlled, that we can conduct ourselves worthy or respect regardless of circumstances. It does not say “…unless you’ve seen combat or faced trauma.” Our veterans especially need to be called to this and reminded of it. This is partly why one of the ways Mighty Oaks describes itself is as a “poke-a-vet-in-the-chest” program. But we “poke” as men who walk in the same shoes as the participants; we were all participants of the program once ourselves. Military & First Responder participants come to us believing they have been sentenced to a lifetime of living inside the prison of a diagnosis, or multiple diagnoses. Mighty Oaks points them to true hope, real healing, and rest for their souls through aligning their lives with the life God created them to live, in relationship with the Lord Jesus, by the power of the Holy Spirit, with the Scripture as our guide. Renewed Hope Through Christ’s Legacy! Dec 12, 2023
    Show notes

By Travis Lewarchik Each week at these sessions, veterans and first responders show up to the ranches in search of hope, identity, and healing. This past week at Skyrose Ranch was no different. Twenty-five veterans and first responders showed up and found or renewed their hope, that hope being Christ. I am constantly in awe of the work that can be done in less than a week. The men who walked through the doors on Monday night are not the same ones who left Saturday morning. The men who left Saturday, left with purpose, hope, and restored legacies. They left with the tools to fight… fight for their legacy, families, and communities. They learned to fight from the high ground. They learned not only who they are, but more importantly who they belong to. They found identity in Christ and Christ alone. They know that the reality of the battles they left Monday will rage on, but they now know how to fight them - using the 4 Bs: Be in the word. Be in prayer. Be in fellowship with other believers in your local church. Be in constant contact with cornermen. Many self-professed “Christians” walk through life assuming that being a “good” person and going to church is all that God requires of them, and that in doing so they will be saved. This week those lies were exposed and men for the first time truly surrendered and called on the name of the Lord. “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9 Men who were on a “self-help,” journey finally found the freedom and help they were looking for. They found freedom from a place of surrender and allowed the Holy Spirit to pour into them. On Friday, I took the opportunity to reflect on the week with some of the participants. While speaking to one of them, I asked, “What changed?” He said for the first time in his life he felt love, joy and peace. Those should sound familiar as he was identifying the fruit of the spirit before he ever knew what they were. I had the opportunity to share with him Galatians 5:22-23 “the fruit of the spirit,” and in that moment the Word came to life. He was listing the fruit of the spirit inside of him in the same order they are written, even though he had never read those words. We serve a living God and who reveals himself to us through the living word. "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law." Galatians 5:22-23 I am convinced that true restoration only comes through surrender and faith in Christ. TO LEARN MORE ABOUT MIGHTY OAKS AND OUR PROGRAMS CLICK HERE!

5 Ways You Can Help a Veteran During the Holidays! Dec 11, 2023
    Show notes

The holiday season is often hailed as a time of joy and celebration, yet for many veterans and military service members, it can bring unique challenges and heightened stress. As we embrace the festivities, it's crucial to remember those who have served our country and ensure their wellbeing during this time. As we revel in the holiday spirit, let's extend our generosity and support to those who have served our nation. Supporting veterans during the holidays and beyond is not just a gesture; it's an expression of our appreciation for their sacrifice and dedication to our country. Here are some ways to show your appreciation and support for veterans during the holidays. 1. Donate to Veteran Support Organizations: Look for reputable organizations focused on aiding veterans dealing with homelessness, food insecurity, or mental health issues. Consider donating money, goods, or volunteering your time to support their programs and initiatives. 2. Participate in Local Support Drives: Engage with local community drives or initiatives aimed at collecting essential items like non-perishable foods, warm clothing, blankets, or personal care products specifically for veterans in need. 3. Offer Your Time and Skills: Volunteer at shelters, community centers, or organizations catering to veterans. You can offer your professional skills or simply spend time engaging with and supporting them, providing companionship during the holiday season. 4. Organize Fundraising Events: Organize fundraising events within your community, workplace, or social circle to gather funds dedicated to supporting veteran causes. Consider hosting bake sales, auctions, or charity events to raise awareness and financial assistance. 5. Show Personal Appreciation: Simple gestures like writing thank-you letters, creating handmade cards, or sending care packages filled with seasonal treats and heartfelt messages can make a significant impact on veterans, conveying gratitude and support during the festive season. Remember, small acts of kindness can collectively make a big difference in ensuring veterans feel appreciated and supported during the holiday season and beyond. Managing holiday stress is equally vital. Veterans often grapple with relationship strains, financial pressures, and demanding schedules during this time. Encouraging self-care, setting boundaries, focusing on the future, and engaging in activities that promote mental wellness are key strategies to alleviate stress. By Travis Sellers, As the week began, I watched more than 20 Veterans and First Responders arrive at the beautiful SkyRose Ranch in California. Some of them had an idea of what to expect, or at least they thought they did. Some were not quite sure what to think. One thing is for certain, they were bound by chains. These men looked exhausted as if they came straight from the battlefield. Truth is, that is exactly where they came from. As we ended the first night with these brave men introducing themselves, I reflected back to the first night I came through the Legacy Program here at Sky Rose Ranch. When I introduced myself, I burst into tears because of how broken I was. I was desperate to receive the freedom I have through Christ. These men desired the same thing, freedom. The lies of the enemy controlled their minds…they didn’t believe freedom, true freedom, was possible. As these men became transparent with the sin that filled their lives, they began to experience superficial freedom. We don’t experience true freedom by just talking about our feelings or the sins we’ve committed. In John 8:31-32 Jesus says, “If you abide in my Word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Jesus tells us He is the truth in John 14:6, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Jesus will set you free from your bondage and sin. This truth began to sink in with these men as the week progressed. They learned that submission to Christ is the key to true freedom. But how do I submit to Christ? Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us to, “Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” We must align ourselves with God and trust that His will for our lives is better than our will. As these men embraced that absolute Truth, their chains were broken! Many of them acquired freedom for the first time in their lives! The weight dropped from their shoulders, the anxiety was removed from their hearts and minds! The lies of the enemy were defeated with absolute Truth! These men are better prepared to fight the spiritual warfare that awaits them on the battlefield of life. We watched them leave the ranch eager to go to war with the Truth as their weapon having been set free from their bondage and sin, through Christ. Honoring Those Who Served Nov 13, 2023
    Show notes

By Chad Robichaux, Veterans Day is a time to honor the brave men and women who have selflessly served our nation. It’s not just about parades, ceremonies or big-box store sales; it's about recognizing and appreciating the sacrifices made by our veterans in service to this incredible nation, and addressing the unique challenges they face because of such selfless sacrifice. The transition from military service to civilian life, or even simply continuing to live a healthy life as a military service member, can be a complex and challenging journey. I’ve lived through it, and now I dedicate my life to helping others navigate the difficult process. For many veterans, it involves not only adjusting to a different lifestyle but also dealing with the physical, mental and spiritual wounds that often result from their service. This Veterans Day, I hope Americans will be willing to take a closer look at the difficulties that many veterans face, and more deeply appreciate their sacrifices and what it is they sacrificed for. "I founded the Mighty Oaks Foundation to fill the existing gap in supporting struggling veterans, active-duty service members, and first responders as they find hope and healing. Our faith-based programs help attendees address and overcome the hidden wounds of war, like post-traumatic stress and combat trauma, and feel inspired to use their talents as they continue to serve their communities through a new mission." Strength in suffering Nov 10, 2023
    Show notes

By Mitzi Egger In his last letter before his death, the Apostle Paul reiterates his confidence in God: “But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day” (II Tim. 1:12). Here Paul rests in his intimate knowledge of God through personal experience and trusts fully in God’s character and faithfulness. This knowledge and trust were forged through great trials and extreme suffering. In II Corinthians 1:8-11, Paul describes a specific affliction which he experienced. It is unknown what this event entailed, but it is clear that it was beyond what Paul felt he would physically survive, saying “we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death” (II Cor. 1:8-9). At the same time, God had a purpose for Paul’s suffering. By taking him to the end of himself and all human help, Paul was forced to utterly rely on God’s grace and power to deliver him. Paul knew and had experienced the sufficiency of God’s grace, “for power is perfected in weakness” (II Cor. 12:9). He understood the strength of Christ’s presence during his times of suffering, “but the Lord stood by me and strengthened me,” and he was also confident in God’s promise to “rescue [him] from every evil deed and bring [him] safely into his heavenly kingdom” (II Tim. 4:17-8). In September 2023, a group of 19 women and a team of Mighty Oaks Women’s Program leaders gathered together at The Wilds in Ohio for the Mighty Oaks Women’s Legacy Program. Each woman came with a story, looking for hope and a way forward in walking through their own individual struggle, pain, trauma, fear, and disappointment. Each class during the session contained a common theme of helping these ladies better know and understand the character of God, His view of us as His children, and how He wants us to view ourselves through the truth of Scripture. In addition, the testimonies of each leader woven throughout the daily challenges and classes provided living examples of God’s presence and help throughout both past and ongoing pain and struggle. As the session progressed, a camaraderie among both the small groups and entire team became evident, ultimately providing hope for these ladies that they were not alone. Not only could they, like Paul, cling to God’s promise to be with them through the waters, river, and fire of suffering (Isa.43:1-3), and strengthen them to fulfill the calling and purpose for which He designed them, but they now had fellow warrior sisters to help lift them up (Ecc. 4:9) through encouragement and accountability. Discouragement and despair began to transition to hope, courage, and determination as these ladies began to plan their next steps forward and implement what they had learned in the session back into the challenges of their daily lives. As believers, we know and believe that God’s power “has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness” (II Pet. 1:3). We also know that Jesus, as our faithful High Priest, not only identifies with us in our weaknesses and suffering, but He also stands ready and willing to help us and extend grace and mercy to us in our time of need (Heb. 4:14-16). Thus, it is our hope that we all continue to become the Godly wives, mothers, daughters, and women that He created us to be regardless of our circumstances, ultimately leaving a Christlike legacy of faithfulness and endurance to those who come after us.
