The Fly Dec 04, 2023

Show notes

When science becomes an obsession you will end up slowly turning into a flying insect with a strong libido and a perpensity to vomit on your food. Stick in some gymnastics and wall-crawling and you've got yourself what could be a great origin story for a Marvel villain.

John Carpenter's Vampires Nov 21, 2023

Show notes

This movie is not one of Carpenter's best. You can skip it entirely - or hang out with us as we watch it and try our best to understand what exactly is going on. You could say it sucks... but that pun has been done to death...

Bram Stoker's Dracula Nov 13, 2023

Show notes

Gary Oldman needs a bite to drink to help himself wash down all the scenery that he's chewing on. Keaunu is servicable, but not his best, and Winona is great. Hopkins is always good, but the biggest success of this flim is the production value, directing, cinematography, and the score.

It paints an incredible picture of a dark fantasy that truly feels supernatural. Special shout-out to the cosutme department - they crushed harder than Dracula crushed Lucy while transformed into a wolf, bat, type thing. If you know you know.

Halloween (Watch) Oct 30, 2023

Show notes

Sometimes you need a man in dickies to walk around in a William Shatner mask and to carve up teen girls and boys who are just innocently trying to smoke weed and bang. When you hear the piano cue you better watch out - Michael Myers is just around the corner.

The Satanic Panic of the 80s & 90s Oct 27, 2023

Show notes

This is a crucial episode of the LDI podcast. In it you will learn that Dungeons & Dragons and heavy metal are the cause of all of the woes of the fundamentalists who were indeed invoking a moral panic. Listen as we discuss our own experience living through the great Satanic Panic. How much truth was there in all of the hoopla? The reality: not much at all.

A Nightmare on Elm Street Oct 23, 2023

Show notes

Freddy Krueger is an interesting horror icon. He is funny. Seems to delight in his killing, unlike Michael Myers, and he has a very unique look; mostly burned, neat hat, dirty sweater, and of course - a glove made of knives. The reality is that he could never kill as many children as the government (take your pick) could, but he will certainly try, and he will do it through your dreams!

The Exorcist Oct 16, 2023

Show notes

What happens when you spit pea soup, slam a crucifix into your snatch, and hurl all manner of vile shit at your parents, visitors, and all clergy...? Well, you get exorcised. I mean what other options are there?

V The Miniseries Sep 28, 2023

Show notes

Congrats to Rob Z for winning the Member Movie Giveaway — this episode was requested by him!

Imagine a future where everyone seems so kind, so noble, so wonderfully benevolent… only to discover they’re all just scheming, shape-shifting lizard people in human suits.

Tough to imagine huh? 😏

They Live Sep 18, 2023

Show notes

Rowdy Roddy Piper in a lead role could get some viewers to just assume that you were about to watch schlocky sci-fi nonsense ala Hell Comes to Frogtown, but with Carpenter at the helm the material is elevated in a unique way. They Live is a wonderful critique of the excess of the 80s couched in a wonderfully delightful science fiction aesthetic. Counterculture is on display and we truly get to see the renegade heart of John Carpenter on full display. Put on the glasses - and enjoy the show!
