Are We Just Luddites? with David Sax Aug 13, 2019
    Show notes

I met David Sax at a speakers’ conference in Philadelphia a few weeks before recording this interview. I had heard of his Washington Post #1 Best Seller, The Revenge of Analog. However, I had not yet read the book and it was a pleasure diving in to prepare for this interview. David is a skilled researcher and even more talented writer. As you’ll see in this episode, he has a sharp sense of humor and knows how to keep things engaging. He’s also highly self-reflective.

David and I jump into a number of subjects including how the world has changed since he released The Revenge of Analog nearly 2 years ago, the habits that he’s built for a healthier relationship to technology, the difficulties of raising kids without iPads, and more.

The Failure of Scientific Materialism with Jeff Bausemer Jul 31, 2019
    Show notes

I was introduced to Jeff Bausemer by my first guest, Andrew Murray Dunn. One of the goals of this show is to highlight individuals that are tackling modern societal issues in a unique way.

One of Jeff’s current missions is to bring ancient eastern practices, such as herbal medicine, back into the main stream to help solve medical and mental health issues. He started East Meets West Festival, because for seven years, he was suffering from chronic illness that western medicine could not cure. This forced him to experiment with unconventional, but traditional eastern medicinal systems.

East Meets West gives modern people tools for personal, social and cultural revolution by catalyzing the conversation around human potential, well being, creative culture, global entrepreneurial leadership & policy, and social impact.

One hurdle I believe we need to move through culturally is the separation of the scientific from the effective. Jeff and I discuss the flaws of Scientific Materialism and our inability to prove cause and effect. We dive a bit into psychedelics which Jeff describes as the next wellness trend.

We're in This Together w/ Douglas Rushkoff Jul 09, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode, Douglas and I go deep. Douglas has spent the last two years recording his own podcast, Team Human, which culminated in his most recent book - one of the twenty he’s published - with the same title. We ask, what’s the point? Are we just contributing to the noise? We discuss the political landscape, how systems perpetuate themselves, what it means to be human, and more.

The Illusion of the Infinite with Preethi Kasireddy Jun 29, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode, I interview Preethi Kasireddy. Preethi is the founder of a new social media app called TruStory which is changing the way we engage in conversation online. Rather than rewarding users with likes, TruStory offers different incentives that reward users for the quality of their arguments and their openness to the opposing perspective. Preethi and I discuss what it’s like posting on social media with tens of thousands of followers, flat earthers, critical thinking, the art of conversation, and how the internet offers us an “illusion of the infinite” when really it’s just repetition of pre-existing information.

Finding Your Flow with Rave Mehta Jun 17, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode I speak to Rave Mehta, a man who was shaped by a powerful experience. After being diagnosed with Lyme Disease (currently incurable using western medicine), Rave set out on a journey to find his own cure. Through rigorous personal science, a deep curiosity and open mind, Rave explored alternative paths and essentially cured himself; he has been asymptomatic for years.

Rave has an incredible experience and is a modern renaissance man. He and I discuss how people learn; explore the differences between art & entrepreneurship; identify the qualities of fear, truth, love, & possibility; identify the power of limiting screen time; and of course address how we can all access a state of flow.

    Why We're Hooked May 01, 2019
    Show notes

Adam Alter is an Associate Professor of Marketing at New York University’s Stern School of Business, with an affiliated appointment in the New York University Psychology Department.

Adam is the New York Times bestselling author of two books: Irresistible (March, 2017), which considers why so many people today are addicted to so many behaviors, from incessant smart phone and internet use to video game playing and online shopping, and Drunk Tank Pink (2013), which investigates how hidden forces in the world around us shape our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

In this episode Adam and I discuss behavioral addiction specifically relating to our use of technology. Adam brings a unique perspective to the space as he has written extensively on the subject, most recently for his New York Times Bestseller, Irresistible. Before Adam raised the alarm about the lengths to which tech companies go to manipulate us, he was someone that tech companies would pay to teach them how to keep us in their app or game for longer.

    Starting a Movement May 01, 2019
    Show notes

Tommy Sobel is a good friend and the founder of a company called Brick. To me, Brick is more than just a company, instead it is a phone free movement. Brick encourages users to build a healthier relationship with their technology, starting with at least 1 hour per day in “Brick Mode” (without your phone). Taking it one step further, Brick asks users to go out into the real world and do something engaging with people you love.

I’ve been to many Brick events and it’s incredible how quickly a group of unplugged individuals can truly connect without distractions.

In this episode Tommy and I discuss our struggles with phone addiction, the theft of our attention, whether Facebook is evil, building a phone free movement, finding fulfillment at work, and the power of community.

Tommy studied neuroscience at Duke then started a career in entertainment as Steven Spielberg’s assistant. Later he became Dreamworks Studios / Amblin Entertainment’s head of frontier technology. It was at this time, that Tommy realized he had an unhealthy relationship to his phone that was negatively impacting his life AND that he was not alone.

    Destroying Taboos May 01, 2019
    Show notes

Miki Agrawal is a force of nature. She’s started not one, but three successful companies including two that created an entirely new category: Thinx and Tushy. Miki’s companies start with one theme - what are we afraid to talk about that hasn’t been innovated? These taboos have become Miki’s opportunities. She talks about this in her new book (her second) DisruptHER.

Miki and I discuss sharing authentically, taboos, and her definition of integrity. I throw my notes out the window as we explore new subjects like the electromagnetic (EM) fog that is impacting all of our health (without our explicit understanding or permission) and what we can do about it.

The Battle For Our Attention May 01, 2019
    Show notes

My first guest, Andrew Murray Dunn, is a warrior fighting for us in the ongoing battle for our attention. In this first episode, we turn to the unhealthy relationship many of us have with social media.

Social media addiction is one of the most important issues of our time, because many of us suffer from it, it has many second and third order consequences (ie: depression, political , and it highlights the importance of our relationship to technology.

Andrew has a clear awareness of this trend. He’s been working in the “humane tech” industry for the last four years, long before it even had this name and years before the surge in negative press about darling technology companies. Andrew has built a new operating system for our phones called Siempo.

Siempo will help you take back control of your own attention and break bad habits. I think we need this help. Without it we have to cultivate super human powers (as Naval Ravikant recently said) to resist teams of thousands of engineering geniuses at Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix and Google, whose sole purpose is to keep us coming back for more. Think of Siempo as a friend in your pocket – it keeps you honest and makes sure that you’re building healthy habits.

In this episode we discuss Andrew’s personal journey, social media addiction in general, the challenges of building a new category in tech, digital wellness, and much more.
