    Show notes

    The Most Important Thing

Junto men’s retreat at the end of March 2020 (I’ll be there)

Junto’s LA Men’s Retreat in Joshua Tree, March 27-29th

    Episode Overview:

In this episode, Andrew and I explore what it means to be a HuMAN (not just A MAN). We discuss men’s work and Andrew defines the nuance between shame & guilt. Andrew explains how to show up in all relationships including when we feel insecure. He explains how to be high value – be curious, tell people why they’re awesome, & offer your support! We all have value just because of who we are – honor that and own it! We discuss the idea of self-transcendence, how we can all be of service, the way to deal with imposter syndrome, and letting go of relationships to serve the highest good. Finally, Andrew opens up about his marriage and how being a father has changed his life.

About Andrew Horn (Andrew’s Personal Website)

Andrew Horn is the creator of What’s the Big Idea (one of my favorite podcasts) and a men’s group called The Junto.

He is a serial social entrepreneur, speaker and writer based in Brooklyn, NY. He is a Global Shaper at the World Economic Forum, was selected to Startup Boost’s 33 under 33 and received the Mayor’s Community Service award in Washington, D.C at the age of 23. He founded Tribute.co to support his mission to spread gratitude and meaningful connection in the world. Before launching Tribute, Andrew started an award-winning children’s non-profit called Dreams for Kids DC.

Andrew is also a consultant and personal coach who specializes in supporting mission driven entrepreneurs and freelancers committed to helping people and moving the world forward in innovative ways.

Over the past ten years, Andrew has built and sustained two social enterprises, raised millions of dollars of capital for his companies, cultivated a thriving tribe of friends and colleagues worldwide, and built the family of his dreams with his wife Miki and baby boy, Hiro. All this while making time for an annual trip to Burning Man (8 years running), morning surf trips to the Rockaways and several international trips each year.

Andrew’s rare blend of entrepreneurial expertise, communication mastery and training as a coach are perfectly suited for founders and social entrepreneurs. He has shown hundreds of clients that true confidence, financial freedom and professional fulfillment are available to anyone who is ready to prioritize them.

Andrew was trained as a coach by his mentor, Lauren Zander (Founder of the renowned Handel Coaching Group). His coaching style is grounded in Gestalt communication practices and emotional mastery techniques that ensure lasting change in his clients.

Heal, Play, Play with Others, Serve with Tim Chang Nov 12, 2019
    Show notes

Tim Chang is an experienced venture capital investor who most recently serves as a partner at Mayfield in San Francisco. He has led dozens of investments into many incredible companies like Class Pass, Basis and Moat.

But as we discuss in this episode, the human identity is expansive, and not confined to our vocations. Tim is also an accomplished musician who performs in three bands, a philosopher and bio-hacker, who brings a contagious joy with him into all he does. (I think you’ll experience this when you listen). He’s also fascinated by neo-tribalism, post-human evolution, dystopian sci-fi and cool boardgames.

In this episode, I felt like we shot into the stratosphere, discussing some really heady subjects like identity, the meaning of life, and whether or not we humans are alone. We also dive into the current tech landscape and new products/services that might pull us out of the current extractive ad-based attention economy.

The Digital Nomad’s View From Southeast Asia with David Abraham Oct 31, 2019
    Show notes

David Abraham is an entrepreneur, author, and leading expert on technology resources to power the green generation. He has been published numerous times in the NYTimes, LA Times, and Wall St. Journal Asia. Most recently, David co-founded Outpost, a next generation travel and hospitality brand whose mission is to help remote professionals and digital nomads to join the remote revolution and design their best lives. Outpost has a number of co-living and co-working spaces in SE Asia with the earliest locations in Bali. David’s prior work spanned many countries including the US, Lithuania, Japan, China and now Indonesia. He has worked both in the public and private sector and has spoken before Congress on the subject of rare earth materials.

I was extremely excited by the rare opportunity to speak to someone who had built unique knowledge at the intersection of so many relevant and newsworthy subjects.

The conversation started with an overview of Outpost and we explored the future of work, the pros and cons of being a digital nomad, and building a community around shared values. Given that Outpost is a co-living / co-working space, we of course had to discuss the recent WeWork drama and David brought a great perspective on the issues that led to the company’s downfall.

Finally, we discussed David’s past research into rare earth metals, the materials that we use to manufacture the high tech chips that go into all of our smart phones. Rare earth metals are at the center of US-China trade talks and Indonesia, where David now resides, sits at the intersection of Eastern and western economic policies. We were able to explore the rising tension between the US and China and what it means for all of us.

We covered a lot of ground on a number of important topics. I hope you enjoy and learn something new just as I did.

The Poet & The Preacher with Max Stossel and Derek Hake Oct 22, 2019
    Show notes

    Max Stossel is a poet.

This is not something that you hear very often these days, but poetry is both his passion and his work. He’s been able to sustain himself doing just that.

A number of Max’s poems were recorded and turned into videos that went viral including The Panda is Dancing which highlights the challenges technology poses to our mental health and relationships. Max continues to perform his poetry on his Words that Move tour and given some of his analogies in this episode, I think you’ll see he’s a master at his craft.

Max was recommended by a number of past guests and I was eager to speak to him given his role as the Head of Education at the Center for Humane Technology where he works to educate elementary to high school students on the importance of digital wellness.

When I entered Max’s apartment for the interview, he was in the middle of a writing workshop with his friend Derek Hake who is also his barber. As it turns out, Derek is an ordained Minister with A LOT of eloquent thoughts to share. He stayed to listen to the show and also shared his thoughts.

This was the first time that I had two guests on the show and my microphone setup is really made for two people max, so there may be some technical issues, but it was worth it to have Derek join.

We discussed Max’s path to becoming a poet, his work at the Center for Humane Tech, Instagram, Burning Man, religion, Fyre festival and the importance of intention.

Privacy, Governance, and Blockchain with Jake Brukhman Oct 11, 2019
    Show notes

Jake Brukhman is the co-founder of CoinFund, one of the first private investment companies focused on the blockchain space. Jake is a serial early adopter of technology with a background in mathematics and computer science. Prior to starting CoinFund, Jake was a partner at Triton research and an engineer at Amazon. I also learned that Jake is a ravenous virtual art collector.

I first connected with Jake on Twitter as I was exploring a nuanced topic in blockchain called generalized mining, which is a fancy word to describe participation in a network protocol. Jake was very open to sharing his thoughts with me, though I was new to the industry.

The Unintended Consequences of Tech with Christopher Ategeka Oct 03, 2019
    Show notes

Christopher Ategeka has had an incredible life journey. He was born into extreme poverty in rural Uganda. His parents died before he was 10 years old leaving him and his four younger siblings to fend for themselves. But he was accepted into an orphanage and later adopted by an American family. He came to the US and graduated from Cal Berkeley with a degree in mechanical engineering.

Chris is now is an award-winning entrepreneur and engineer. He is the founder and CEO at UCOT, a company that has created a unique model to support and fund early stage start-ups creating solutions to unintended & willfully ignored consequences of technology. His conference, UCOT forum, creates a space to host authentic discussions around exponential technology development & usage that may not be serving humanity’s best interests.

Prior to UCOT, Chris founded Hourglass ventures an early stage fund that supports visionary entrepreneurs from the African continent who come from underprivileged backgrounds. He also founded Health Access Corps, a social enterprise that works to establish sustainable healthcare systems on the African continent.

He was most recently honored by the World Economic Forum as a Young Global Leader.

Chris is now dedicating his life to battle the unintended consequences of technology. Because he believes that technology is evolving much more rapidly than humans understand, which can end poorly for us all.

On this episode, we discuss Chris’s journey to starting his first business, the start up scene in Africa, and the rapidly evolving tech landscape in the US. Chris shares his PIMP framework – Power Influence Money & Politics –on how important decisions are made across the globe and he explains how he believes large scale changes can be practically executed.

As always, I learned a lot from Chris, was inspired by his story and hope that you are too.

A Healthy Digital Diet with Jocelyn Brewer Sep 24, 2019
    Show notes

Jocelyn Brewer is the creator of Digital Nutrition who has been exploring the impacts of technology and hyperconnected lifestyles for a decade. She is a registered psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia and part of Australia’s first cyber-psychology research group. In addition, Jocelyn has over 13 years experience in public education as both a teacher and school counselor.

On this episode, Jocelyn and I discussed digital nutrition and how it is a more wholistic approach to technology use than simply labeling the technology as addictive. We discuss two different schools of psychology CBT or cognitive behavioral therapy and ACT or acceptance & commitment therapy.

Since Jocelyn often interacts with kids in a school environment, we focused a lot of the conversation on the impact technology is having on “Screenagers” and even explored Jocelyn’s approach to technology with her two year old daughter.

Jocelyn brings a sharp intellect and lighthearted approach to a serious topic and I loved chatting with her. As always, you can find more info on Jocelyn and her work in the show links.

It's Not An Addiction With Nir Eyal Sep 18, 2019
    Show notes

On this episode of Look Up! I interviewed Nir Eyal. Nir writes, consults, and teaches about the intersection of psychology, technology, and business. He is an entrepreneur and investor who has started two companies and invested in many more including Eventbrite, Refresh.io, and Anchor.FM.

He’s the author of bestselling book Hooked: How to Build Habit Forming Products and more recently Indistractable: How to Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life. Nir has also taught at his alma mater, the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

This was a great conversation, because Nir challenges some of the ideas that I held before we met. His goal is to put the power back into the hands of the individual. We dive deep into what constitutes addiction vs. habit forming behavior. We also discuss learned helplessness and the steps we can take to take to regain control of our attention. For those of us who feel hopelessly addicted to technology, this episode can offer some guidance on how to start breaking bad habits.

I also learned that an old study claiming will power is a finite resource was actually debunked and that it will power is only a finite resource for those who believe it to be.

Our Deepest Fear: Unity & The Metaphysical with Aaron Rose Sep 10, 2019
    Show notes

Aaron Rose is a motivational speaker, transformational coach for public speakers, writer, and educator. In addition to managing inclusive culture design work for organizations, Aaron is also an energy worker and a meditation teacher.

His work is rooted in an intersectional understanding of power & research-backed principles of behavioral & organizational psychology.

I couldn’t be happier that my previous guest, Jesse Israel, introduced me to Aaron.

For me, this was one of the most powerful conversations on Look Up! to date. Aaron and I explored a broad range of subjects that sometimes bordered on controversial. From the multidimensionality of personality, identity politics, free will, manifestation, unwinding generations of unconscious social biases and even Marianne Williamson in the Democratic primary.

We toed the line between objective and subjective learning and between the physical and metaphysical. We even discussed experiments in the power of prayer to transcend our linear understanding of time.

    A few of Aaron’s Truths:

    1. Love is the only real thing
    2. Unity is the natural state of humanity
    3. Earth was once the Garden of Eden & we can bring it back

    Some great quotes:

The New Leadership Paradigm with Jesse Israel Sep 04, 2019
    Show notes

Jesse Israel is a social entrepreneur, community leader, meditation teacher, and public speaker. Jesse started his career as a music industry executive when he co-founded Cantora Records. He was responsible for discovering and launching the mega success MGMT.

He’s created and leads communities like the Big Quiet which gathers thousands of people at a time for group meditations in iconic locations like Madison Square Garden. He also started MediClub, a community gathering where people can practice meditation and talk about things they usually don’t have space to discuss. Mediclub has launched over 300 circle programs to date.

On this episode, Jesse and I dive into his experience with anxiety, depression and SSRIs. We discuss the “imposter syndrome” that many leaders and wellness professionals feel as we experience our own humanity. Jesse describes what it means to be a leader, the art of vulnerable sharing, and how “right” work can heal. We also talk about tribalism and some tips on how we all can start our own communities. Jesse is an inspiration for me and many others – and I hope that you gain a lot of from this conversation.
